I don't know if this will help you but first I would say yes you need to reinstall LW on your computer but for the License Acquisition issue, I have noticed occasionally I will download a file and when I attempt to play it I will get a message saying I need a liscense to view this file. I clicked yes one time to see what would happen and IE started up with multiple windows and all of them were to porn sites. I tried closing the windows but they were opening up so fast I could not get them all closed. So I used the task manager to completely shut down IE. After that happened I have never tried to get the license when I am prompted to. I would say that alot of these porn sites hide their files as other names to get unsuspecting people to access their websites. I did download a different media player that will play these files without asking to get a license and when I use that player all I get is a scrambled video. I can only assume that these files are all from porn sites so I no longer even attempt to access them.
I also do not open any files that have a .exe extension.

Lord of the Rings December 31st, 2006 08:10 AM

Yes some videos & audio files that have the capacity for DRM do get loaded up with links to suspicious sites. You should never click yes to allow it to send you anywhere. Some are Phishing type sites. VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site) is a player that will not allow such popups & is a reliable player for videos & also many audio formats.
More about DRM here What you should know about WMA/WMV Files

Troubles

Im trying to download songs from Lw to a folder in my computer, well everytime I drag and drop the song from the folder to my removable disc, it says it cant because its "writeprotected"?? Is there an easier way to move all my songs from my computer to my removable disc? And I have reverted my popups and enabled showing licenses. This even happens when I try to move songs that I got from Bearshare. Please help. K.

Hi all, I'm having a with Limewire at the moment, and also I downloaded Morpheus to check if it was Limewire or possibly something else. Oh and I also reinstalled Limewire and this didnt work either. Could you help?
1. OS version? Windows XP
2. What firewalls you have? ZoneAlarm
3. How much ram? 512 MB
4. Hard Disk space available? 17.2/55.8 GB
5. Connection type? (Eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Belkin F5D750 (although this might be the usb stick)
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? Home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LW 4.12.11 Java 1.5.0_10
9. Who is your ISP provider? Tiscali
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. network of two computers, laptop (this one) and a desktop. I also use Morpheus, see above
11. I did get "Your test worked"
12. I got false
13. download speed 971kbps upload speed 215kbps

IndieKid March 14th, 2007 11:12 PM

PS. I dont know how accurate the test results are, because i dont live in America, and when I chose a different state, my results varied greatly. Many Thanks.

Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?

Zonealarm will need configured to allow LW access to the internet. See: Firewall setup. If your running zonealarm you should have the xp firewall shut off.

The Belkin F5D750 is a WIRELESS ADAPTOR, and not the router. There should be a main box that your wireless adaptor transmits to. That is your router. What's the name and model? It probably has a nat firewall in it that'll also need configured. See: Connection problems? Check here first!.

Tiscali is known filter/shape file sharing apps. See birdy's post here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ali#post259809

I've been using LW for several years and never had problems till now...I got LW to get lists for chosen criteria but when I go to download I get BUPKUS. Either says "connecting" or "need more sources". and remains 0% ...I'm already connected so thats not the problem. My bars say turbo charged... and I've done all the things stated earlier in this post and still nothing ... heck I even turned off my firewall completely and still NADA.... How is it possible to download using this LW

birdy April 26th, 2007 09:27 PM

You might be seeing fake files, these will sit connecting for ages & then get stuck needing sources...they won't ever download. Always chack movies with Bitzi before download. Music doesn't get rated on Bitzi as much...search for artist or album name rather than song title. Use the All Types search. Stay away from popular files with huge numbers of sources.
Fake files showing up in search results

If absolutely everything you try to download gives you the connecting/need more sources message (do a test - search for an old song & try to download a file with 10 sources or less), delete your preferences folder when LW's properly closed.

See point 3 below (also point 2 if you've used much older versions of LW in the past).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through later & reset things to the way you like them.

wondering why May 25th, 2007 01:38 AM

Get itunes it's heaps better...;)
To make itunes your default player...

Go to your shared folder (outside of Limewire) you will find this folder by clicking on one of your files in your LW library and clicking explore...

Right click on one of your MP3 files
Select open with
Select choose program
select itunes
and tick the box that says always use this program to open this file type
Select OK

Microsoft Digital Rights Management
Windows Media Player uses Microsoft Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology to preserve the rights of content owners who protect their music or video products in this manner. You must have a DRM license in order to play protected content.

If you acquire protected content from a music or video service, you may receive the associated license at the same time. If not, when Windows Media Player tries to use a protected file that does not have a current license, Windows Media Player will attempt to acquire the license for you. This can be done through your online store, or directly from a license server on the Internet.

License Acquisition
If there is an online store associated with the protected file, software installed on your computer by the online store may obtain the license before you play the content. If this software requests any data from you or collects any additional information automatically, this data will be subject to the online store's privacy practices.

If the online store did not supply a license, or if the protected content is not associated with any of your online stores, Windows Media Player will request a license directly from a license server on the Internet. The license server's Web address is specified in the protected file; most license servers are operated by companies other than Microsoft. When requesting a license, Windows Media Player will provide the license server standard computer information, an ID for the music or video file, the action you have requested (such as play or burn), information about the DRM components on your computer such as their revision and security levels, and a unique identifier for your computer. The unique identifier is used only to generate a license for your computer and, because it is enclosed in an encrypted license request, is not available to the license server in a way that uniquely identifies you or your computer.

By default, Windows Media Player will automatically attempt to acquire a license silently unless the license server requires some input from you (such as registration information or a fee). You can turn off automatic license acquisition. If you do so, you will be prompted to obtain a license for any new content that requires one. To prevent Windows Media Player from acquiring licenses automatically, do the following:

1.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
2.
On the Privacy tab, clear the Acquire licenses automatically for protected content check box.

Please note that this setting does not affect license acquisition from online stores.

I'm new to the forum and came to read up on the download issues. When I click on a file to download it I got the same license popup whereas I never did b4. But I'm still scared to be caught lol.

mickjapa108 May 31st, 2007 08:06 AM

Don't do it then, Its your choice. So whats your question.

xxvanessaxx May 31st, 2007 08:10 AM

There is no question. I was simply saying " I read up on download issues" so therefore no question was needed. Only made a statement. Thank you for warm welcome to this forum.

muhctekdano May 31st, 2007 08:14 AM

:welcomeani: to the forums.

Perhaps Mick was confused because you posted in a thread titled 'license problem'...

Feel free to start your own thread (in the appropriate sub-forum) if you can't find a thread that you can add to.

Happy to hear that you're reading up! Many people post without reading anything, and it can get a little frustrating! :xeri_ok1ani:

Grandpa,

I am not new to Limewire. My older version stopped downloading. When I checked for updates, it was pretty old, so I purchased a new version. It still will not download. I did the license thing. I checked the firewall program. In the monitor, I can see incoming searches. I did all the tests you linked to and they came up that the test worked.

Download Speed: 2576 kbps (322 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 436 kbps (54.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

I can search and find numerous copies of what I am looking for, up to 114 copies at a time, available. But I cannot download any of them.

muhctekdano June 2nd, 2007 09:41 PM

What type of files are you trying to download? There are many fake files on the network, mostly in the video and program sections. Fake files often have a high number of hosts listed.

Dan

spazyone June 5th, 2007 08:10 AM

I was trying to down load episodes of TV shows. More episodes of what I had downloaded before. Incomplete downloads will also not connect. They all say need sources, but plenty of sources are available when I do a search.

muhctekdano June 5th, 2007 08:21 AM

Have you verified the files with Bitzi?

Hi I just joined was having problems with the license. Checked out this site and found I wasn't the only one having this problem. I did what you suggested and it works fine. Thank you so much. I can tell this site will be very helpful to me. So glad there are people out there willing to help others.

Thanks again

Tizza =] August 12th, 2007 01:38 PM

I'm worried about the downloading part. The pop-up that comes up when a song has no licence came up and also said it couldnt find gnutella. And I've clicked yes on the pop up so I could download the song. I'm worried incase this is illegal or whatever. And also- none of the songs on my lime wire have a licence- literally!

wondering why August 12th, 2007 04:53 PM

If the files have a copyright attached to them it is illegal for you to download and upload them, depending on your Countries laws...

If you want to make sure you don't have the chance of downloading copyrighted files Go To Tools > Options > Searching > Lisence Warning and tick the box and select apply...;)

Tizza =] August 13th, 2007 02:21 AM

yaa...
thanks for the help, but that is the problem.
I allready had it on that, but the fact is every song on my limewire has no licence, so I can't upload anything.:shoot:
I'm beginning to wish I'd have just listened to songs on youtube!! lol
help! :bangh:

hunter14 August 13th, 2007 11:14 AM

All you have to do when it pos up is check the box that says always take this answer and the click yes. It will never appear again.

Tizza =] August 14th, 2007 10:46 AM

i know, but i dont want to download illegal files.
I'm just wondering why on all my mates computers most songs are legal and have no copyright whereas on mine every song has copyright.

If they are copyright files then they will be copyright. If your friends don't get such a message then they have their LW set up without such a message. If you have heard the song on the radio ... your computer or your friend's computers, then 99.9% chance they are copyright. ;)

WHY DOES IT SAY CANNOT FIND LICENSE WHEN I TRY TO DOWNLOAD????? PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME.

michwayne September 21st, 2007 08:34 AM

means exactly what it says that there's no license it's a warning that it might be illegal to have without a license.

Go to Tools > options > Searcing > Lisence Warning and make sure the box is not ticked and select apply...

I have had limewire pro for over a year and I've been able to download perfect till about 4 days ago. My connection says "turbo charged" but goes down to "excellent" and back up again, so I don't understand why I can't download anything. I'll type something into the search field and click on search, but as soon as I do that, either I don't get a window, which I don't know if that means it's not searching, or it opens a search window with the subject on top, but nothing shows up. The search bar increases till I notice that it's searched completely, but I have no results.
I've tried searching in the different categories and they all end up the same. I don't know what to do to fix it.

i have windows xp and have tried EVERYTHING possible. this is a new problem that i'm having and i dont understand why....please help me...!

badboy__1982 October 31st, 2007 08:07 PM

hi when ever i try to play a song from lw in wmp it comes up with downloading usage rights but still wont play any one no what i can do ????

mickjapa108 November 1st, 2007 01:57 AM

Hey Badboy

Try downloading & using the VLC media player (Its Free) & recommended by us here
at the limewire forums. VLC player has most all of the codec's built into the player &
plays above average quality for music & excellent quality for video files, (It plays most everything)

If you wish, VLC player can be set as the default player for your computer, to do this
In Limewire Library, highlight a file mp3, avi or whatever you wish then click on
explore, in the bottom left corner.
This will take you to the shared folder outside of Limewire, right click on a file,
choose, open with, highlight VLC player, then tick the box to always use this program
to open this type of file. Repeat this action to include all the file types you wish VLC
to be the default player.
USE THIS LINK IN BLUE (download from the nearest mirror site to you)

P.S. Disable the WMP player from connecting to the web.

Your servant.
Peace.

BaZa November 22nd, 2007 07:25 AM

Same here I had firewall blocking until this tip was given to me :xirokrotima:.....I did this...

Quote:

Revert Popups to Default : Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>View>Popups & click revert to default.
......but each time I go to use Limewire I have to redo it every time is this normal?

Cheers.

Hey im having the problem with the licence thing that you were talking about, but im on a mac and the settings that you are talking about im not getting?

Lord of the Rings February 5th, 2008 10:09 PM

See page one for Mac settings; ie: posts # 2, 3 & 4.
You may need to reset popups, then change search options 'after' that. Do not tick show licence warning unless you wish to be warned about it.

Keyboard shortcut for Mac OSX preferences is Command (or apple key) & comma at same time: ,
Most but not all OSX programs use this location & shortcut.

Ace5655 February 20th, 2008 04:56 PM

Rhapsody's better

Should just use Rhapsody with best buy digital music store, they've got a free 30-day trial that let's you download as many songs as you want; when it expires they don't disappear, you can still play them. Just don't buy anything during the trial or they'll bill you a subscription. When your trial's up, just create a new account with another email address. I think it's better because it's actually legal and you can get 90% of your songs for free.
