I am having the message pop up about licensing also. I just signed up for limewire and do not know much about this. Does anyone know how to get this message to stop popping up?

It is a part of the new LW for legal reasons. If you decide that it doesn't matter downlding copyright material, then tick Yes, & you can optionally then tick Always use this answer (& you won't be asked again.) If you don't want to take the risk then press no. But if you press no & choose always use that answer, you'll not be asked & not be able to downld files that would have requested information about licensing; thus you'll need to do one of 2 options:

(1) Revert Popups to Default : Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>View>Popups & click revert to default.

(2) Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Searching>Basic & decide whether to tick or untick "Show License Warning" (this is a setting you should do when 1st setting up.)

Mac OSX users will find the options in a different location. Use Command (apple key) & comma, (-,) to bring up the LW preferences. Then same as above. ___ (click image to see larger view)

Latest version of LW option to turn this off is bottom of this post.

LW 4: Tools>Options>Searching>Basic & decide whether to tick or uncheck "Show License Warning"

And for OSX that's of course:

For LW 5.0 - 5.2, option can be found in Tools -> Options -> Security, & press on Warning Messages - Settings button. Also decide over Filtering options:

Yes I am having the same problem with the lisence with the new LM but I thought everything to do with LM was legal that's why I subcribed to it.

Lord of the Rings September 1st, 2005 04:03 PM

Subscribed? I think you should see this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=1

No where on the official LW site does it say downlding copyright material is legal. The official site is here http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml
If you paid a lot of money for it then i'd cancel the transaction asap. LW Pro costs US $18.88 & the Basic version is Free. Some scam sites will have you pay more & then direct you to the downld page of the Basic version. Since when would the record companies be happy about people sharing copyright songs for free when they don't get a penny/cent. Any web site that claims Free downlds of music & movies is a scam site!

We are going to need a little more information from you make sure you do the speed test it is the link at the bottom.

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (Eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (Eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your ISP provider?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.

* Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

12. Do This test, Is the result True/False?
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...757#post103757 Is the result True/False

13. Do a speed test post the results here.

Hi Lord of the Rings,

I did what you suggested and checked out the License and just clicked on the 'Set to Default' button in there, and it started working just fine, so it was the license issue.

Thank you for your time you were very helpful. Cudos and four stars to ya.

Thanks,

Slimey

Hello,
a while back, i downloaded the limewire basic and used it for a little bit. just recently, it told me that there was a problem with the startup and that it couldn't open, even though i used it for a little while. i downloaded the limewire 4.10 basic and i tryed to download something but a thing comes up saying i dont have the license to download it, and i can click yes, no, or cancel, so i click cancel.
here is my question: how can i get the license to download things without this popup? it is really anoying since i lost all of my other stuff and cant get anything else to replace it.

much thanks

Toolman January 15th, 2006 05:08 PM

Hi just joined the site and had some problems with downloading. I tried what you suggested above and it worked. Just wanted to say thanks.

If you decide it doesn't matter, what are the legal issues that could follow with this?

Well ... legality of downlding copyright music varies depending on country & state. eg: AFAIK I believe in Canada it's ok so long as you don't share it. In some other countries it's not illegal unless you bootleg it & sell it (such as where I am.) But that all also depends upon whether the local authorities take notice. And the question is how can they find out unless they're actively seeking out people who do this. Are they going to bust a person who has downlded 50 copyright songs ... or would they prefer to seek those with multiple thousands so it would have a little more validity in court. Legality has been discussed numerous times on this forum. You should use the search button & type in something like legal, legality, riaa, etc. Here's an example There was an excellent thread on the topic but it disappeared. But there's more around.
What the proposal is, is to ... well you can read more about it here RIAA going postal, affecting LW? ie: in the meantime, you take your own risks if you decide to downld copyright material. LimeWire does not condone downlding of copyright material. That's up to the individual user. And when you went to the LW site to downld the program, what did it ask you before you were able to downld it. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml / http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...loadfree.shtml

Angello January 18th, 2006 04:04 PM

so basically you are saying that you can get the licences for them and all i can do is dowload copywrited material? this sounds a little bogus to me, but if i have to do it that way, then so be it. also, if i dowload the music without the licence, with "they" be able to know and can they track me?

thanks for all the help

stief January 18th, 2006 05:58 PM

I'm not a lawyer, but I wouldn't rely on legal advice on a forum like this.

Where to get trusted legal advice? A lawyer of course. Still, there are some good sites where lawyers are involved. Are you asking for a contact or a link for your country?

btw, Coffee shops and bars are also bad places to get medical advice. ;)

The ability to attach a license to a file, and to be able to search for a license is still being tested and as a technical issue can be reasonably discussed.

Around the world Intellectual Property laws are still being debated and tested by governments, and lobbyists are finding lots of work.

kb17 January 19th, 2006 07:51 PM

hello,
evertime i try to download a song, it says that there is no license for the song.it happens for every song. does that mean that it is copyrighted?and i was wondering how to get songs that do have licenses if thats possible.so if someone can help me that would be great.

stief January 19th, 2006 10:09 PM

not many files have licenses attached yet (that feature is still pretty new), so you can't tell if an unlicensed file is OK to share or not.

To search by license type, try an audio search and select "Creative Commons" to try some licensed files. You can also right click the result headers to turn on the license colum in the search results.

Soilder4Christ January 20th, 2006 03:32 PM

Is it illegal to download a file if LW says they can't find a licence? If it doesn't have a licence is it copyrighted? And for confirmation, if it doesn't have a licence or/and is copyrighted, it's illegal to download it?

I really need somebody to help me because I now know that downloading a copyrighted file is illegal, but I still NEED to know if an downloading unlicenced files is also illegal. Somebody please answer me.

The answer is on page 1 of this thread. Here's the link: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...176#post154176

Revert Popups to Default : Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>View>Popups & click revert to default. Then try to d/l another file and the license warning should popup.

batty1955 May 29th, 2006 05:26 PM

Of course - and i may be wrong but could the FBI be watching everyone on the sites and then decide they need to raise revenue! Beware :-)

Lord of the Rings May 29th, 2006 07:12 PM

From the country I come from, who are the FBI? FreeBeesIncorporated or F***B****Instigators, who knows or cares. They've never done anything for me despite making a complaint to them more than once about legitimate issues for no response. They don't exist here ... therefore they don't exist! They're irrelevant AFAI'm concerned. They have nothing to do with politics here. Perhaps the CIA do ... well the CIA interfere in every country's internal affairs. And what a mess they've made of the world where they've had major influence ... the past 80 years has shown that! They are a sham ... they are terrorists whenever they interfere in other country's affairs. That's how they've operated for the past 80 years as terrorists! Whoever leads them has to then take that mud on their back unless they clean their act up which is like asking a monkey to give up a month's supply of food.

My comments have nothing to do with the topic of this thread & should therefore be ignored!

batty1955 May 30th, 2006 02:12 AM

erm

Nothing to do with the threads - but made me smile so something has come out of my sharp learning curve this weekend!

Hello I tried what people posted but it really didn't work out for me, I can get the pop up to tell me that i don't have the license. If i click no obviously it doesnt download if i click yes to download anyway and ignore, it still doesn't download. However when i go to commons under search and license type, it shows me those files and i can download them, but obviously it is a limited number of downloads and those are not the songs im looking for. So, how do i get to files i can actually download? Is there a way to aquire the license for those files? Help appreciated.

krsh skullkid,

If you read this thread it gives instructions. Basically when the message pops up, read it, tick "yes" or "no" then tick "always use this answer". That will stop it from popping up;).

See page 1 of this thread & suggested settings & if necessary, Revert Popups to Default.

If nothing seems to work, then try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.)

morn everyone hope L.W.works today down loaded new pro yesterday really dont want to download illegaly when it does down load a song i cant find it in my temp folder someone got any ideas where it might be hidding my music THANKS

Lord of the Rings October 11th, 2006 06:32 AM

If a file hasn't completed downloading then it goes to the incomplete folder. Once it reaches 100% downlding, LW moves it to your downld folder. Getting off topic here.

Newb poster here. Just downloaded basic LW (had a version on a previous computer, worked fine). Now, I can download the files, but on many files, when I try to play them in Windows Media Player, I get a window which pops up named "License Acquisition" from media.downloadmediacentral.com (showing a picture of a chick in a bikini and inviting me to meet hot singles), and another "File Download" window which asks me to download a file named "Play.exe".

I am suspicious of downloading a file named "Play.exe". Is this normal? Do I have to download that file?

Thanks,
K
