Default New here and need help Hi (slow download speed since changing ISP)

Hi all,
On looking through the forums I can clearly see that I'm not the only one experiencing the problem of ultra slow download speeds. My history of Limewire is such:- used basic for about six months and downloaded everything I wanted with download speeds in excess of 100 kbs in some cases. I was using a netgear wireless asdl router.
I then bought the full version and the downloads continued without any problem and I used this for maybe another six months.
I then changed to Sky broadband and installed a new netgear router which they sent me and from that very day the download speeds have been awful, 4or 5 kbs with 8 hosts!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Sky broadband is 8 meg, whereupon my previous was only 2 meg.I have done a speed test etc. from one of the links posted here and the results are 2555 download and 350 upload. I am using XP home SP2. Any ideas anyone, but please bear in mind I am no computer whizz. Also when the downloads stopped. I couldn't get free updates any more so I uninstalled the pro version and downloaded the free version again, but to no avail. Thanks,
Peter

Sky Broadband have a Fair Usage Policy...maybe that accounts for your slow speeds
Sky.com - Usage Policies

Try downloading a file from here & see what speed you get. Slow download from this site often points to an ISP throttling bandwidth.

Try changing ports (no guarantees but it's easy enough to try). In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 64049, or something in the range of 49152 - 65535. Click on Apply to save the change. If you have specific ports allowed through a software firewall, or a port forwarded within a modem/router, these will also have to change!

If you give us your system details, we might be able to help more!

Hi petero,
If you don't see the brick wall that's a good thing...means that there's no firewall interfering with LW.

Did you try the download from magnetmix? Did you see a reasonable speed?

Did you try changing ports & did it help?

You could try changing Java versions to this one. Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java version before you install the new one!

Hi Birdy,
Yes I did try changing ports with no success but only changed the value in the listening port and the upnp is allowed. I don't know how to alter things in the router, although I know how to get into it.
The speed from the download at magnetmix was 2 hosts at 7-12 kb/s.
Thanks,
Peter

p.s. Will not allow me to download the Java software, keeps coming up with fatal error message

Well since the magnetmix download was slow, I'd be looking at your ISP as a suspect

No, seriously, since they have that FUP in place & since speeds have dropped off since you've been with Sky Broadband...it sounds suspicious.

Especially since you're not even seeing the firewall icon...being firewalled can slow down speeds. That's not your problem. If changing ports didn't help, there's not too much that we can do. If it's an ISP issue then there's probably not much that you can do either, apart from changing ISP
