New Isp Provider Download Speeds Have Dropped?

hello guys, need some advice ragarding my download speeds!

I recently decided to go with a new ISP provider (fast.co.uk) since then i have noticed a drop in my download speeds.

My previous ISP was AOL & i was on the, upto 2MB package, my download speeds were reasonably good, i could download a (700.0mb) movie within 60mins! my speed was usualy between 130kb/s and 170kb/s

With this new provider, i am on the 8mg package & i am recieving atleast 5.5mbp, which is alot more speed, but for some reason my download speed has dramaticly dropped!

I have been assured that my line is in good working order & i am recieving exactly 5.5mbp speeds, so why is limewire downloading this slowley?

i spoke to a technichian, who told me i may need to locate the IP ADDRESS, for Limewire?

do i need to re configure limewire, due to changing to a new ISP?????

would really appreciate any kind of advice on this matter thanx!

i noticed the drop in speed on the same day, i migrated to my new ISP!

wondering why November 16th, 2007 12:51 PM

Did you get a new modem/router when you signed up with them ??

no i didn't recieve a modem router, i am using a (bt voyager 105 adsl modem) that was supplied to me, by AOL many years ago!

could this be causing the problem? it's an old modem & the drivers are old too!

do you think, this modem is compatible with up to 8meg speeds, or does the problem lie with limewire?

surfing the net, doesn't seem too bad, just downloading off limewire has gone very slow!

I am surprised that you did not get a new modem when you signed up with Fast.co.uk, because most ISPs have a preferred modem/router that they either recommend or supply you with.

I know that AOL prefers BT Voyager Modems, because I have a friend with AOL, and Bulldog likes Thomson SpeedTouch products. Therefore, I have some suggestions:

a) Find out from Fast.co.uk which ASDL Modems or Modem/Routers they would recommend.

b) Ask if they use "Bandwidth Shaping" equipment, i.e. which restricts P2P communication while allowing browser Internet traffic through unhindered.

c) You may want to try the following also:

Let us know how you get on.

hi Bob, thankyou for ur reply! for some reason (fast.co.uk) do not supply a modem, and i have been assured by them, that they do not shape p2p traffic...

i did alot of research, before i chose my ISP and fast.co.uk came highly recommended... they are not a large ISP provider, but are voted as one of the best!

i am considering purchasing a ethernet router/modem, maybe that will resolve the speed issue with limewire, if that does not work, then i really don't know what could be wrong!

thanxs, for the link, i will def look into, how i can fix limewire, if limewire really is the problem!

In the mean time, would appreciate any more advice, from people who have experienced this similar problem, when changing ISP... THANX

hmmm..well first off I am a Mod here so I can view your IP address....I traced your IP addy and get some rather interesting results....like it apparently bounces from the UK to Germany and then thinks it resolves in Amsterdam...very strange....another IP locater couldn't resolve it at all...perhaps it is this 'issue' that is causing your situation...

hey thanx peerless, i will mention this information regarding the (IP address) to my ISP tomorow morning, maybe it is something that can be looked at.

i was considering installing java again, but i really can't see how that could be the problem, seeing as only yesterday Limewire was working like a dream & that was with a upto 2mbp connection....

i changed my ISP with speeds of upto 5.5mbp & limewire is even slower than before..... PUZZLED

Modems & Modem/Routers

Although what I am about to write has no relation to your original query, if you have more than one PC in your household then get yourself a modem/router. That way all your PCs will have access to the Internet and you will have the capability to add extra facilities such as Internet radio, streaming music from your PC and/or Internet phones (VOIP).

The extra (hair greying/falling out :bangh: ) complexities that modem/routers bring you, in my opinion, can only be worth it if you have family members pushing you for their own PC/Internet connection.

But if you are a one PC and Internet connection household then stick with a simple (plug & play) USB ASDL modem, like the Thomson SpeedTouch 330 (now available for under £18.00)

Good Luck

one final thought..this just might be a tcp settings issue...then again it might not be...

download and run tcp optimizer and take the time to read the instructions so that you can optimize your settings...use the backup function to save your optimized settings in case windows update changes them back to default..

Thanx peerless, but i think i have figured out, what the problem may be...

When i open Limewire, i have noticed the BRICK WALL remains on all the time, this has only started happening since i changed to a new ISP & removed the AOL software that was on previously!

my connection on Limewire is still going to TURBO charged, but my download speeds are much much slower than before!

i'm trying to figure out, how to get rid of the block wall, i have already re installed Limewire pro twice!

i have also deleted the the preference folder, but nothing has changed...

what other options do i have, what is causing the brick wall? i'm sure it isn't my Avast anti virus, due to the fact it has never blocked me in the past.

any suggestions, are much appreciated.. thanx!
