Default There you have it : the first MP3 virus

You know you can block certain file types because they could contain virusses ?
You would typicaly block files like .vbs and .htm .

Well now you can add .mp3 to the list .
A glitch in Winamp 2.79 (www.winamp.com Winamp is the most used player) allows people to embed virus code wich would get executed during playback .
The code can be attached to the ID3 V2 tag .

There is a easy fix tho : disable Winamp's minibrowser .
BTW : Winamp 2.80 is out , maybe they fixed it ?

Here's a link with some more details : http://www.intelligentx.com/newslett...h2_050202.html

The big companies like Norton and Mcafee haven't even included this new type of virus in their database yet .
Also , most virusscanners are set to only scan files containing executable code like dll , exe , vbs , xls , ...
This is default behavior to save CPU time .
So even when their scanner is able to recognize "bad" code without updated virus definitions it won't be looking at files with the .mp3 extension .
And most people don't even know there is an options screen in their scanner so don't exept them to change it .
BTW do you have any clue of how many people actually update their scanners ?
90% you say ? Try more like 5% !

So you can stick your virusscanner up your *** .
"Think before you post , OK ?"

No I'm serious,
I'm always scanning my downloadfolder for viruses...
OK OK, my virus definitions aren't that new too but
hey... thats better than nothing isn't it?

I dont know how it works there but I think my
F-Prot scans every file I open, doesnt matter which
extension.

That virus is not the same thing .
It's an ASF file posing as an MP3 .
I'm talking about a virus attached to the ID3 tag of a real MP3 .

Your scanner scans everything already you said , so you only need to update it to be sure youre safe .
