do not report child porn. i know it sounds bad, but listen. i use IRC sometimes, and I was spammed by a user with a CP ftp server. the ISP the pedophile used was roadrunner USA. i e-mail security@roadrunner.com, paste them the ad the person gave me, and asked them to investigate.

road runner's response? we want a log with timestamp, if not, we can't do anything.

ISPs and law enforcement have fell way behind on CP enforcement. they'd rather go entrap random people online who are meeting undercover officers for sex, than actually stopping the CP itself.

the main problem is lack of money for law enforcement, and lack of training. ask a regular detective about gnutella and limewire, he'd give you a funny look.

As said: same in Oz - BUT

As everyone knows, sometimes half the files on p2p Networks have incorrect or misleading names - and that works both ways : -

Often you can be looking for particular file and it will turn up in Searches with inappropriate words tacked on/into the filename
OR vice-versa... you DL the correctly-named file and it's actually something else ... - like illegal pron, a DRM or other Scam or similar ...

Either way you can have trouble if you don't check the files immediately, rename any that're OK, Completely delete anything inappropriate/illegal AND any record or cache of either.

This can sometimes be tough when you're scheduling things to run overnight/unattended or that're 'queued/waiting for sources/position in line etc... - more so if you're sharing partials (as pointed out by an earlier poster.].. In the worst case you can end up both with illegal stuff on your HD *and* having redistributed it ....

The Police & Courts are *not* the brightest or best-informed. All you can do is be vigilant - and careful ..

BTW, in response to Forum_Monkey's earlier :
Quote:

...so your average 18 y/o movie will infact be either CP or some 50 y/o mother with ... tatoo's ... another host I browsed their files, much to my amazment and disgust there must have been 200+ cp files there....
Actually, most of the stuff about that's labelled as CP *isn't* - there isn't that much around (there isn't actually much demand for it, happily) , or to paraphrase your comment: your average 'CP' movie will in fact be either legal 18+ clips mislabelled or, as you said, some 50 y/o mother with tatoos and those '200+ cp files' there were probably legal. [To put my comments in perspective, I've been actively working with Computers & Comms - all kinds of different environments & protocols - for a very long time (300bps modems ...:) I've run & used a lot of differnt types of sites - from dial-up BBS's, FTP servers, exchanges, web sites and 'hosted' & watched on Server-Client & p2p 'Nets'.

Like most similar things, this "CP epidemic" has always been a media creation. Most Producers, Providers, sites, Servers & Admins - and people generally - just aren't interested. Demand is small, potential for trouble is huge, there's no money in it (and, unsurprisingly, most people strongly disagree with it).

And the very few who *are* interested are hardly likely to advertise the fact by splattering their IPs, email addresses or website details all over the place - they tend instead to be secret little 'closed' Networks of CP fanciers.

Unfortunately there is fallout: A lot of Video & photographers who used to wander about in public places seekings original shots or 'B-Roll' (background) footage won't shoot children or the places they play, swim, hang around etc. - it's too much trouble with all the silly paranoia about. As an example, I've shot video records & stills for a very prominent "Babies to 16' group of swim schools because their usual US-based Videographer quit doing it after being repeatedly challenged by parents or Busybody types and the courteous but genuinely-concerned...

And the 'western world' is now also full of Grandpas who won't hug their Grandkids or let them sit on Grandpa's lap ...

It's pretty sad, really.

Hi, i've only registered here today so hello all.

just got a big problem I want to get off my chest, been looking for limewire forums for a while now to say about this so here goes..also its reassuring to know that other users have come across this problem before and other users have helped out...I do apolgise if maybe I posted this in the wrong thread but I did read the Forum rules and regs, and this thread "underage nudity" seemed right for it.
ok so here goes..........

was recently looking for photos and short clips of the "harry poter-goblet of fire" film, I managed to download few files of pics and videos, majority of them where proper but 3 of them featured the young girl in the film, who was nude and where very unpleasant scenes, dont want to go into any more detail about it...

now this is where my problem is, i've only recently got limewire programme so im not so sure about how all the file sharing works etc and i didnt take caution...i found out that i was sharing two folders on my pc "My Music" and "my pictures",unfortuenly I downloaded the harry potter pics and video clips to "my music"
So what im saying is, these files where idle for about 5 mins in that folder, and during that time loads of limewire users cud of downloaded it! AND NO THEY WHERE NOT IDLE BECAUSE I WAS LOOKING AT THEM, THEY WHERE IDLE BECAUSE I WAS DOWNLOADING MORE STUFF, AND I LOOK AND LISTEN TO EVERYTHING AFTER I'VE FINISHED ON LIMEWIRE......IM NOT SICK AND NEVER MAKE MYSELF LOOK AT THESE SORT OF THINGS.

I OBVIOSLY deleted all the disgusting pictures, cleared temp internet files, cache the lot!!

So guys, ashamed to say this but i really am SCARED on wots going to happen to me next...am i gonna get a visit from the law,get taken to court??

Sorry if this seems like an inrelevant post, but I didnt get a good night sleep last night, been searching the internet for advice all today, and worried sick...as a result I have uninstalled limewire permantley.

im hoping someone can help me, if not just send me somewere else where i could get help....THANKS ALOT GUYS

Worrying over nothing

vwgolf2006

You are going to give yourself a heart attack or a mental breakdown if you can worry so much over virtually nothing.

It is very unlikely that any western authority is going to monitor or worry about someone that accidentally downloads a few filthy pictures. In addition, most western laws are based on intent, i.e. did you intend to download those files. As you did not and immediately deleted the files after you found out what there were no one is going to knock on your door and seize your computer.

So pull yourself together and stop worrying over nonsense.

I'm afraid I ,must disagree, UK BOB

Most such 'western' Laws are extremely intrusive and offensively stupid.
As with most drugs, guns, many other 'illicit' items (i.e. those not understood or approved of by the Tribal Witchdoctors of the society), simple possession is enough - even if you didn't know the stuff was there.

Neither the Law-makers (the Pollies), the Courts & law enforcement Nor the average members of the public understand *anything* about the Internet, P2P, Usenet, Online Apps etc. etc.

In a long tradition of entrenched ignorance and bigotry that goes back to before The Pious & Insane Torturers of the Christian Church's 'Inquisition' thru the Witch-hunts of Salem, Nazism, the McCarthy horrors in the US to the Current 'War on Drugs', 'Tough on Crime' and 'War on Terror' *nonsense* that's used to 'justify' appalling legislation destroying our privacy & basic liberties, the approach to 'The Internet and Child Porn' is as fundamentally stupid and unjust:

If you're reported/investigated and found 'in possession' you have as much chance of 'Justice' as young Nguyen Tuong Van (Arrested: Waiting in Singapore Airport *transit* on his last leg home - he hadn't even entered the barbarous place - Jailed & Hanged on a ludicrous pretext: Importing & Trafficking! http://tinyurl.com/744gc) or young Australian 'Innocent abroad', Schappel Corby (http://tinyurl.com/b5kcr) -arrested arriving from Oz at Bali airport , when customs 'found' 4kg of cannabis leaf in her bodyboard bag - Faced Death, got 20 years in an Indonesian Hellhole..If you don't know, taking Cannabis to Bali is like sand to the sahara - it's about 100 times cheaper there than *anywhere* in Civilisation! Utterly ridiculous and entirely barbaric & corrupt -They didn't even fingerprint the plastic it was wrapped in! The going rate is about A$100,000 for the charges to 'go away' or even just a Sentence reduction...-If interested, read this moron, too: http://tinyurl.com/af8aw -'The Law must prevail' no matter what the outcome!]

Precisely the same 'principle' applies to Child porn: if found 'in possession' you have *NO* chance, no excuse - which means *any* computer user/ISP could face serious criminal charges at any time.

It is bad Law and it should be changed.
But that's the way it is.

Aragami_Frog February 23rd, 2006 05:08 AM

So what if you didn't make it.

If they (the athorities) wanted too they could bust you for any amount. Usually the way one gets in legal in trouble is when a family member/friend etc... finds the material and turns them in.

I believe that the current law is one year for each picture.

True it may seem like it'd be wasted effort to go after a person with 1-2 files listed for available download but remember that where there's smoke there's fire. If someone has just a couple files for download doesn't mean that is all that they have collected.

Remove the content and don't download it to begin with is the best suggestion.

As for the nudity law, if the person is a nudist it's ok if they are nude but they can't be posed. They law can get you for any nudist images that aren't entirely up to snuff.

It's not about your definition or beliefs but the definition in Blacks Law dictionary that most legal pratices go by.

killians1978 May 30th, 2006 02:20 PM

You can and -will- be busted if you have illegal materials downloading and if you share out partials (which -will- happen). I had recently encountered the exact scenarios described here - legitimate downloading, searching for adult images, and finding that I had queued and downloaded KP. The items were deleted, but I didn't completely follow procedure. It'd just happened so many times I just see it and delete it. It doesn't really phase me anymore and I've been P2P sharing for years.

Three months ago, Feds showed up at my work, and at my house with a search and seizure warrant. They took five computers, 600 cds and dvds, and said "have a nice day, we'll be in touch."

I'm currently without a lawyer on retainer because it's federal and costs $10-15,000 for one if you haven't been charged yet. They can spend the next 285 days toying around with my stuff before deciding to charge me. I haven't slept more than a couple hours a night for three months because I know "how it looks". The law does not care what your intent was. They don't care about how the internet works. They only care that there was ever illegal porn on your computer.

I will probably go away for the Federal minimum sentence of 5 years, if not longer. It's taken me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I will not see justice in this case because the law is ignorant.

This is just to let you all know, be VERY careful. It might be your door they come knocking on next.

After reading all this, what is the best way of getting rid of that crap completely off my hd?
I didn't see the erase option on my spybot(free verssion).

RaaF June 2nd, 2006 10:03 AM

Top left on spybot > click mode > Click advanced mode
Now all program options are visible
If you go to tools you will find "secure shredder"
R click in de blanco field and add the files you want to shred

nobodyspecial June 2nd, 2006 01:51 PM

Is there anything else you recommend?
Do you any freeware hd "scrubbers" out there?
Thanks for the help.:D
