A menubar crash in OS 9 used to indicate an extensions conflict (some version of faxSTF was the culprit for a while). A type 1 or 2 error message was often displayed.

If you've given 60-90 MB of memory to the LW application via Get Info, then try using your extensions manager to turn off any suspect extensions.

(yup--sure is sweet on OSX)
