Danteism Here are a few suggestions you might try. First thing, a lot of what Apple says you shouldn't do with your mac is said to protect themselves, period. I quit taking their advice 12 years ago. I run 9.2.2 on all of my macs, including a PM 8600/300, PM 9500/120, PM 9600/300, and G3 B&W. I also run MRJ 2.2.6 and don't use oracle. Without getting to techy, boost the memory in the get info dialog box of LW. Another good idea would be to boost your disk cache in the memory control panel to a custom setting. The formula to figure that is 32K times every 1MB of RAM that you have. Don't count VM as actual RAM. You should see a marked improvement. For example, my 8600 had a disk cache default setting of 8160K. I increased it to 14336K based upon my installed RAM. MonkeyBoy The uninstallation of an older version of Apple MRJ occurs automatically with the installation of the newer or updated version. Also, you really need to get more RAM and increase your disk cache. 4MB is mighty small for this day and age. |
Thanks so much for the tips... I'll try installing MRJ 2.6.6. Boosting the memory via the LW dialog box didn't improve the situation at all. (at one point just to see, I boosted it by something 60 or 70MB with no noticeable effect) One more question: Quote:
So, basically... should I be upping the cache to 9216 or 8832? Thanks for all of your insights. Dante |
Danteism Multiply the 32k times your actual RAM. Don't even take the current disk cache into consideration. Just for clarity, you have 288MB of RAM (if I understood correctly); take 32K x 288MB = 9216. Also if speed is a real problem with any application, create a RAM Disk (memory control panel) and run the application from the RAM Disk. |
Thanks so much! I've done exactly what you've suggested, and appreciate the time you've all taken to hlep out. All the best, Dante |
Everyone with the OS 8-9.x systems: Prior to installing LW, suggest that you run Disk First Aid, DiskWarrior and/or Norton Utilities to make sure your system is in good condition. Increase LW preferred memory by 200-300%. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=18278 Mac OS: Assigning More Memory to an Application Program. After you are done with all the downloadings & installations you MUST rebuild your desktops. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10182 Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery. Or use Techtool Lite which makes rebuilding your desktop easier w/o all the finger twisting on the keyboards. |
