Vista

Sorry I don't know of any other fixes but if it makes you feel better, Gateway told me just running the windows firewall would be plenty and that I didn't really need McAfee. I think it just comes with a free trial that you eventually have to pay for anyway. At any rate, 3 people have replied saying that it works and its hard to tell how many have actually done it and just haven't replied. I tried everything and this is the only way I can get it to work. Its been running perfectly for about 2 days now. It may be worth a shot....

Oh yeah, and worse case scenario if you uninstall and limewire still won't work for you, you could always do a system restore and get it back....

Thank U very much

Thanks heather what u recommended worked perfectly. I uninstalled Mcafee and I installed Limewire and it's been working fine since then. I was so happy. Thanks for your help. I hope it has worked for all of you. Limewire is a very good program.

Windos Vista and Limewire (and Mcafee)

Scenario:

I bought a new machine that came with Windows Vista Premium and Mcaffee preinstalled.

Installed Limewire and it wouldn't connect. Meanwhile, my internet connection was blocked while Limewire was running and even after I closed it, for about 5 more minutes. I tried all kinds of things: checked the router, used Windows Firewally, used Mcafee firewall, used none, etc. No solution!

So I uninstalled Mcaffee as suggested above and voilá: Limewire was download great!

But I wasn't satisfied with that answer, so I reinstalled Limewire, thinking that the order of installation made a difference: not so.

So then I started unistalling each part of the the Mcafee suite. First the Mcafee Firewall: uninstalled, restarted, tested; same thing.

Then the Mcafee Privacy Policy: uninstalled, restarted, tested; Limewire worked great (and bittorrent too!).

I haven't re-installed Mcafee Firewall yet. The bottom line is that I didn't want to uninstall Mcafee Anti-virus (for obvious reasons). As far as the firewall, I can use Vista's, I guess (but I'll try to reinstall Mcafee's). As far as Mcafee Privacy Policy is concerned, I don't care much for it, so there it goes.

I'm hoping that people that are going through don't have to uninstall the entire Mcafee suite, just the cause of the problem. Heck, I may even reinstall it and start working with the settings to see what happens --probably something with "buffer overflow" or the like...

my 2 cents.

Thanks

Thanks for the information, I'm sure a lot of people will find that very helpful. One question thought, McAfee can free with my computer.....no that I've uninstalled it how would I go about getting it back and jsut uninstalling the privacy policy?

Re-installing Mcafee

I guess it might be different for different people, but here's what I did:

I went to http://us.mcafee.com/root/login.asp; after entering my username/password, I had the downloads that I was entitled to available for download. Whenever you bought Mcafee, you probably created an online account (for updates, etc.); you would use that account.

In my case, I have three items listed. I chose the anti-virus option. Actually, it doesn't matter which one you choose to download; when you run the downloaded program, you have a chance to pick any of the items you have paid for; you can check or not. I have left the Privacy Policy OUT.

I hope this helps.

note: I have an account with Comcast, as my ISP, and so I get Mcafee free of charge. All I had to do was create an account with my comcast.net account and voilá. Anyhow, I mention this because it may be different from "paying users", etc.

i hav vista and i downloaded limewire but it cant connect to download any songs. i have java 6 but it still doesnt work. any ideas?

aeava February 12th, 2007 05:30 PM

Well...

Well.. there are several ideas listed on this thread. Have you read them or tried to apply those techniques to your system?

I guess the most important things are:

- make sure there's a hole in your network firewall
- make sure there's a hole in your personal firewall

and for me, it was uninstalling Mcafee Privacy Policy.

I can search for songs and download them without a problem, and the best part is....it doesn't hijack my internet connection. I can do both at the same time. Imagine that. Worked PERFECTLY for me. Thanks!
