Fix for 1.5 missing Javaw.exe

When you run the shortcut to limewire, and the "Searching for javaw.exe" Window comes up, quickly hit browse, then go to your WINDOWS folder (C:\Windows) and select javaw.exe. Now your Limewire 1.5 should work, enjoy :)

If it continually asks for the file, which it did for me, copy it to the system folder, where LimeWire automatically looks for it.

What OS?

We are working hard to solve the missing javaw.exe problem. I haven't yet been able to reproduce it on my machine. More information would be helpful. What OS are you running? I'm guessing the answer is Windows98. Also, can someone with a broken LW run the Windows search command and tell me where javaw.exe is located on your system?

Thanks to those who have reported the problem and reported fixes.

Running Windows 98SE, limewire looking for javaw.exe in Windows/system folder when it is in the Windows folder.

kbchurch July 4th, 2001 07:13 PM

My trouble with Win2k SP2 is that the Java RE never gets properly installed, therefore I also get the searching for javaw.exe too.

When LW attempts to install JRE, I get a "Can't run 16-bit Windows program" error box.

Any ideas?

Unregistered July 4th, 2001 10:50 PM

when i go to download limewire the downloads r slow it goes like 1.0 or less u got to fix that prob

kbchurch July 4th, 2001 10:57 PM

I found out what was going on that made JRE during the Limewire 1.5 installation. I use X-Setup and had turned off "Create 8.8 filenames (NTFS partitions only)" and "Allow extended characters in 8.3 filenames (NTFS partitions only)"

Once I turned those back on the install went smoothly. I only wish connections would happen faster with gnutella or Limewire, which ever one it is.

Different fix

The Windows javaw.exe was my first idea, too, but I've noticed that the installation installed JRE. You can use the JRE's javaw.exe too, it should be a bit better (but not very noticeably). Anyway, you should fix the installer for this...

I tried your solution and have found that the file does not exist at all. Not in C:\Windows or anywhere else on my hard drive. Help, signed Melja6bryant@cs.com

Win2k fix for limewire 1.5

Ok gang,

The fix for windows 2000 is to copy the JAVAW.EXE file to the
/winnt/system folder.

That's all

The setup program is copying the javaw.exe file twice,
once to the /program files/javasoft/jre/1.3.1/bin folder and the
/winnt/system32 folder.

The minute you copy the javaw.exe to the /winnt/system
folder it works fine.

limewire 1.5

Why is it taking so long to download limewire 1.5? Usually when i download something off the internet i get speeds between 4.0 and 5.0 but with this, everytime i try, it's below 3.0. once it was going 1.78 and was going lower. is there a better site that i can try to download it from? any help would be appreciated. thanx.

1.4b

Limewire 1.4b which I'm currently using works so well for me that I am downloading the installer to back up on a CD-R. If something works, why upgrade, especially when there are known problems with the latest version unless you no longer have an older version available and other reasons?

The system tray icon does not do anything. If you minimize the program into the system tray, it cannot be reopened. Win 98.

I will second THAT. I'm sitting here using Sprint Broadband Direct, and I'm downloading at a whopping 1.5 kbs. What's up with this server??

Stability Issue Fix?

I'm finding this problem when running LimeWire 1.5 on a Win 98 SE machine (after, of course, having fixed the shortcut launching bug, which has already been discussed thoroughly here and should be referred to before continuing with this tweak): The program will spontaneously close or shut down without any distinguishable cause or reason, whether running in the foreground or background, searching, or not searching. However, I have found a tweak that improves the overall stability of the program on my system. *WARNING: Try this at your own risk only!* Open the Windows control panel. Double click on the icon that says "Java Plug-in 1.3.1" and wait for the windows to open. When it pops up, you will see the tab "Advanced" at the top. Go to that tab. If the "Java Runtime Environment" says "Use Java Plug-in Default", change it to "JRE 1.3.1 in C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1" and then uncheck the box that says "Enable Just In TIme Compiler" if it is not already unchecked. Click apply and then close the window. Try launching LimeWire again, and see if that improves its stability. If anyone tries this on their own machine, please reply and let us all know if it worked or not (work being a relative term). Be sure to specify what operating system is and all that fun stuff. Good Luck Everyone! :-)

About that download acc. fix bug thing, does that actually work?
Because if does, you should put it in a new thread and demand that it be stuck.

fix for javaw

A missing javaw file means that either there isn't a jre on your system or it isn't in your path environment variable.

If you have a jre, there should be a javaw.exe file somewhere on your hard disk. You can change limewire's shortuct to say "c:\jdk1.3\bin\javaw" (or wherever that file is located) instead of c:\windows\javaw" and that should work.

If you don't have a javaw.exe anywhere, that means that you don't have the jre since limewire didn't install it. To get it, go to java.sun.com and download the jdk1.3.1.
After you do this you can follow the step above.

Windows Me problem

Well I did that fix where you quickly hit browse and select the javaw.exe file. But that only worked a couple of times. Now when I double click on Limewire, nothing happens. NOTHING, just sits there, I don't even get hard drive activity. Anyone know what's up?

Unregistered July 7th, 2001 09:32 AM

How I got it to work

I fixed it by just reinstalling Limewire v1.4 and now it works again!
I didn't have to delete anything or change my windows configurations.

Have you peeps heard of KaZaa Media Desktop?
It's a great program and it's easy to use like Napster.

Check it out for yourselves...

Hey, that Javaw.EXE file I don't believe comes with that latest Java standard Edition2. I noticed I got my Javaw.EXE file from an older version of Java Standard Edition2. I reccomend getting an older version of Java Standard Edition2 somehow and then installing that latest version of Java Standard Edition2. Eh!? How many times did I type Java Standard Edition2?! 1..2...oh nevermind.

He means uninstall new.net, which is causing the problem. You can use add/remove, or ad-aware, depending on what works.
