Unhappy Cannot play MP3 after annotating

ANNOTATING an MP3 file in LimeWire 4.0.8 Pro seems to corrupt it.

After annotating several MP3s I downloaded, I noticed that I can still play them with the built-in player in LimeWire, but not in Windows Media Player.

When I downloaded them, they played just fine in Windows Media Player. (Although I needed a tag-55 audio codec first).

After annotating them, Media Player says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt of the Player does not support the format you are trying to play."

Clicking on "More Information" brings up a web page titled "0xC00D1199: Cannot play the file" which is of no help.

Suggestions?

Thanks, I already have it. For this particular song, nimo didn't have the proper codec; I got the correct codec from the DivX web site. With that codec, Media Player could play it, until LimeWire did something to it.

I don't think the problem is my codec. As I said, Media Player played the files just fine before I used LimeWire to annotate the songs. I can't believe that annotating a song would change the compression technique, invalidating the codec. The same codec should still apply.

After annotating a song, Media Player cannot play it. LimeWire can still play it though.

If LW can play it though, it sounds as though it's WMP issue. WMP is full of licencing & purchasing xtra codecs. That's why I hate wmp. There's lots & lots & lots of other mp3 players out there. Do a google for free mp3 players & you'll come up with heaps of responses. WinAmp & QCD player :
http://www.quinnware.com/ are supposed to be pretty good. Try GSpot.. it's free and it will tell you what you need to play a certain file.. just open the file in GSpot and it will tell you. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Thanks, I have GSpot. Great program. It says the same information for the files "touched" by LimeWire as those which I didn't annotate. Windows Media Player still won't play the annotated ones.

You're right, I should be using a different player. The problem is, I wanted to put these songs on a CD so I could play them at work, and I may not be able to install my own choice of media player.

The question remains: what did LimeWire do to this song that "breaks" Windows Media Player? Another question might be, how can I restore it?

That reminds me, I 'think' I read somewhere where WMP can be a touch sensitive to file name changing. I've searched the forum, but so far to no avail. I'll see if I can remember to get back to this thread. My answer is incomplete for now.

U might not want to have oodles of apps but to consider some other options: look at the links in this following thread. Perhaps another option is music match & u can try out the free version 1st. I heard it's only limited by speed.

Actually, that error code contains a wealth of information and you can find out all about. Go directly to MS Support page and do a search (takes about three seconds) for the error code. It will give you a direct answer. I'm guessing the file has a long name ro was changed to a longer name. If this is the case, change it to something shorter. I have had to do this many times with LW files in WMP. It isn't LW's fault it is the fault of the choder head that exceeds the allowance for filenames. LW didn't corrupt the file it was probably confused when the file was changed--yes even annotated. I believe WMP attaches annotations in the string for the filename though you don't see it.

It didn't give me a helpful or clear answer.

Well, I fixed it. I downloaded the Quintessential Player (awesome program by the way, and free), which also has the capability to annotate MP3 files. Noticing that it could play the files where WMP couldn't, I annotated them again using Quintessential. Voila! Suddenly WMP could play them again.

Limewire is doing something that WMP doesn't like, but as you suggest, that's not necessarily the fault of LW but rather some bug in WMP.

Anyway, thanks for all the helpful replies.
