Limewire Keeps Shutting Down after 5-30 minutes of it running

After I startup LW, it shuts down again on it's own after any other warning. I searched the forums, found this, went through all the steps, but now it shuts down even faster.

What else should I do to prevent this from happening?

Could you supply these details please...
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?

9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.

birdy February 17th, 2007 02:47 PM

Try the advice here
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...37&postcount=2

I can't find any info about a D-Link DI 6144 (614+ yes...is that 6144 a typo?). If the router supports UPnP, enable it within the router & choose the UPnP option within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Apply > ok to save.

If that's no help, have a look through your router's manual for info about how to set up port forwarding.
Here's a link to instructions for the DI-614...log into your router & see if the pages look the same as in these instructions. You might be able to use them for your router.
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...+/Limewire.htm

Note that you have to set up a static IP;)
LW's listening port & the port forwarded must be the same number.

ElMonoDeFeo February 17th, 2007 05:26 PM

sorry, was a typo, so i made a static IP address and set it to Manual Port Foward (should i have set it to UPnP?)

I'll report back on whether or not this worked!

EDIT: didn't work...

birdy February 17th, 2007 07:11 PM

If you've set up port forwarding, you'll need to tick the 'manual port forward' box in LW & make sure that the port number in the box there is the same number as LW's listening port & the port forwarded.

Did the brick wall icon disappear & stay off after you set up port forwarding?

ElMonoDeFeo February 18th, 2007 08:59 AM

no, and now LW doesn't even recognize that I have internet at all...

I was also having trouble connecting to the internet myself, so i had to right-click the little wireless system tray icon and hit "repair"

ouchies... what now?

EDIT:
I went back and ticked the use UPnP one, and now i see no firewall, and LW recognizes my connection. I'll leave it on this so i can at least download stuff until further instructions (did that sound rebel-ish? sorry if it did)

birdy February 18th, 2007 08:23 PM

No that's fine...remember I told you to try the UPnP earlier;)

Is LW still shutting down, now that you've got the UPnP option selected?

ElMonoDeFeo February 18th, 2007 09:11 PM

oh forgot to mention that yes it's still shutting down XP

birdy February 18th, 2007 09:28 PM

It's shutting down XP? Are you getting the blue screen?
Your earlier posts said that LW was shutting down...not that XP was shutting down:notsure:

Try Java 1.6. Remove all your other Java versions before installing the new one.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

If you're seeing the blue screen
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...&highlight=bsd

ElMonoDeFeo February 19th, 2007 09:14 AM

that was the emoticon XP, not that it was shutting down windows XP

sorry for the confusion :wasntme:

ElMonoDeFeo February 21st, 2007 12:36 PM

which java version do I download? JDK 6, JDK6 with Java EE, JDK6 with NetBeans 5.5, or JRE 6?

birdy February 21st, 2007 01:49 PM

Use the JRE (Java Runtime Environment).

Sorry...I usually specify but I must've been off with the pixies this time:o

ElMonoDeFeo February 24th, 2007 03:56 PM

sorry I haven't posted in a while, was busy with things...

It still shuts down LW, even though I uninstalled all my java's and installed the JRE 6 thingie...

Now my java version is 1.6.0

ElMonoDeFeo March 2nd, 2007 07:23 AM

hmm... totally lost on this one... what should i do now?

birdy March 3rd, 2007 03:03 PM

Did you follow the advice here?
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...37&postcount=2

Try another version of LW & see if the same thing happens. The latest basic's 4.12.11 or there's a 4.13.2 Beta...just remember to use the offline installer. Delete your preferences folder again as well.

If that's no help then I'm sorry but I'm out of ideas:whistling:

ElMonoDeFeo March 3rd, 2007 03:42 PM

4.12.11? I only have 4.12.6!

I can't get LW to tell me "A NEW VERSION IS AVAILABLE!" even though i set the Update option to "Service releases"

grr... and on limewire.com, i have to pay to get the newest version...

how do i get LW to recognize there's a new version out?

birdy March 3rd, 2007 03:55 PM

You'll have to pay for a Pro version if it's more than 6 months since you bought Pro...but basic's free. You could try a basic version. Do you have your Pro installer saved? Just that when you install a new version, it automatically removes the old version. So if you don't have the Pro installer saved, you'd lose the Pro version you have.

Don't know about the updates thingie...I've got mine set to tell me when a new major release is out but it never has either. I guess that feature isn't too reliable:blink:

ElMonoDeFeo March 3rd, 2007 05:04 PM

yea I have the new installer saved, but how would that install the new version that i DON'T have the installer for?

birdy March 3rd, 2007 05:27 PM

It won't...you have to go here
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml
and download an installer for the version that you want to try.

Try either the latest basic or the Beta.

ElMonoDeFeo March 3rd, 2007 05:33 PM

but it's been less than 6 months since I bought pro... why do I have to go back to basic?

birdy March 3rd, 2007 05:41 PM

Everyone's getting confused:giggle:

Because you said that you have to pay to get a new version, I assumed your Pro was bought more than 6 months ago. If you bought Pro from the official site www.limewire.com less than 6 months ago, you won't have to pay to get the newest Pro version;) .

Use your personal download link to download a Pro version. The only reason I told you to get basic was because of what you'd said previously about having to pay to get the latest version.

ElMonoDeFeo March 3rd, 2007 06:32 PM

personal download link?

birdy March 3rd, 2007 06:51 PM

When you buy Pro, you recieve an email with a link to your personal download page...for updating Pro during the 6 month period.

Did you buy Pro from www.limewire.com ?

ElMonoDeFeo March 3rd, 2007 07:45 PM

sadly, I got it from a friend (he had the installer, and he gave it to me), so i paid him (for 10 bucks)

does that mean I can't update my LW Pro?

muhctekdano March 3rd, 2007 08:35 PM

yes, very sad...:(

birdy March 3rd, 2007 08:41 PM

Dano, is that some sarcasm there?
:lmao:

Never mind ElMono...you can always try a newer basic version, see if it's any better (stops shutting down). Then, if you want Pro, buy the official version & get your 6 months worth of updates;)

mickjapa108 March 13th, 2007 09:27 AM

Hi blkhawk.

System details - help us to help you Please.

Cut n paste these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You.

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. what OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista)
2. What firewalls you have ?
3. How much ram ?
4. Hard Disk space available ?
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers ?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ?
8. What version,LimeWire & Java,Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?

14. Have you given full permisions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ?
15. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?

These are all contained within the sticky Connection problems? Check here first!
but possibly some people are getting a bit confused or lost when we direct them to this sticky & ask them to provide their details.

This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth,
some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions,
or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink:
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

mickjapa108 March 13th, 2007 11:52 AM

Blkhawk lets start again.
Sounds like things have become jumbled.

Follow thease instructions exactly.
So, you need to Go, Start/All Programs/LimeWire n Uninstall all L/W versions.
Do Not Uninstall From Change or Remove Programs.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now Go to, Start/Search/click on all files n folders/more advanced options/
& make sure, case sensitive, is not ticked. (all other boxes should be ticked)
Now!!, Put limewire in box, (all or part of file name) & click search.
Delete everything found, including Prefetch folder, (I mean everything)
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now! Go to,
START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs,
now completely remove all versions of java.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now! Use this Link to get JRE 6, Use the off line installer, NOT the (recormended) one,
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
When Download is completed.
Disconnect from internet, close ALL apps n reinstall java.

Now!! Use this link to download latest L/W version using the off line installer
http://www.limewire.com/
If you need help, Shout, If it fixed your problem or not, Feedback helps others.
Peace

blkhawk10 March 16th, 2007 05:16 AM

i have tried the latest beta version and the same thing happens.

it is very aggravating, you pay for pro and you can not do anything

blkhawk10 March 16th, 2007 06:07 AM

I Tried it all again this morning. it worked for about 2 minutes then shut down. now it almost shuts down immediatley when opened.

I just can not get this to work. And it started all of a sudden. it worked for years. i did not install any new programs that may have a software conflict. I do not get it

mickjapa108 March 16th, 2007 06:44 AM

Can you clarify this please.

7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ? [B******[/b]

P.S.. If you have had other P2P software on your computer you may need
to clean the remnants of those programs out from start/search

mickjapa108 March 16th, 2007 07:31 AM

ElMono Hi.
I just found this. I think you may need a new ISP.

(b) Subscriber shall not upload, post, transmit or otherwise make available on or via the Road Runner Service any material protected by copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret or other proprietary right in a manner that infringes or violates any such right. It is the policy of Time Warner Cable-Greensboro to terminate in appropriate circumstances the Road Runner Service of any subscriber or account holder who is a repeat infringer. This policy does not affect any other rights Time Warner Cable-Greensboro may have under law or under any agreement between Time Warner Cable-Greensboro and Subscriber. (Time Warner Cable-Greensboro also reserves the right to suspend or terminate Subscriber's Road Runner Service for a single violation of this paragraph or any other provision of this Agreement or other Terms of Use.)

blkhawk10 March 16th, 2007 07:50 AM

Help

mickjapa108 March 16th, 2007 08:21 AM

blkhawk10.Hi
Dont give up man.
Right Ive been back through the thread and you havent confirmed that you
carried out the fix in post #31 this should fix it.
If not then You realy need to give your ISP a ring ask if its them shaping P2P
Peace.

blkhawk10 March 16th, 2007 08:34 AM

i have tried the fix in #31, and it did not work.

My isp has been the same for years and LW always worked up until 2-3 weeks ago. My isp is SBC Global

it's getting out of control. I even tried the steps in #31 and innstalled the Beta version.

No answers.

I really do not know what to do.

mickjapa108 March 16th, 2007 08:42 AM

I had the same ISP for 3 years, Tiscali, no prob then it started,
Work with me man, or what can I do.

blkhawk10 March 16th, 2007 09:01 AM

i'll give them a call and let you know how that turns ok,

Thank you

mickjapa108 March 16th, 2007 09:11 AM

blkhawk10 Hi
Thats good we can rule them out then, there not on the list so it would be a
new one, many ISPs are starting to Disrupt P2P latley.

actually, the Roadrunner service hasn't been in place yet. so it shouldn't have any effect.

I got a strange error when I started up LW beta... (attached)

Go to your incomplete files & resume the files from there (not too many at once)...they should resume from where they left off.
