solved, i think

i just went ahead and tried to start the limewire.jar in the usual java way.
seems to work. this means you can pass arguments to limit max mem.
for example:
java -jar limewire.jar -Xmx80m
limits max heap to 80 meg.
consequently, limewire shows up in task manager as java.exe.
