Question can't switch to Ultrapeer

I have the latest version of Gnucleus and I can't get it to switch to Ultrapeer mode.

I have Ultrapeer check enabled and my connection type set to cable. Rebooting didn't help. It seems I'm stuck in Child mode because when I change the # of connections there, it takes immediate affect. What am I missing?

BearShare will run in ultrapeer, no problem.

Is there really a benefit to switching to ultrapeer? I know ultrapeer will use more of your bandwidth, but I'm never read that you'll get better search results or connections when in ultrapeer mode.

I would love to be able to start a servent in ultrapeer mode to be able to test it better. Without beeing connected to the Gnutella network.

Default Someone said...

that Gnucleus won't run in ultrapeer mode on a Windows 98 or ME computer. From what I've read, an effecient ultrapeer would have to be capable of maintaining 100s of connections, something 98 can't do. BearShare developers are talking about making it more difficult to become an ultrapeer. Too many people are runnning in ultrapeer mode even though their connections can't really handle it.

Hey GregorK, how ya doin'?

For you guys, it might seem a bit lame, but it isn't... start by checking out the Gnucleus 'Manual'.....
The recommendation there of 50KBps minimum UP for operating as an Ultrapeer is REAL MINIMUM...... Broader is better.... If 50 is your limit than that means NO other operations being performed.... i.e. you are not using your machine for anything but acting as Ultrapeer.
In real world practice your UP bandwidth capacity should be even higher... MUCH higher.
If Vinnie and John Marshall and Mike Stokes and others include higher default requirements to be met in order to operate as an Ultrapeer, than they should be respected as leaders doing something extremely positive for Gnutella Network.
Anything which serves to deny inappropriate Ultrapeers is beneficial to all of us.
There is no 'status' implied by acting as an Ultrapeer and it is not something that should ever be encouraged to be tried by those who do not have the minimum adequate resources.

btw, ME will easily handle the 'load' of being an Ultrapeer, but not if it is a typical ME installation with corrupted files and ridiculous IE and Virtual memory settings... Meaning, you must not operate with the M$ defaults, but with what is actually best for your machine.

So, really, we are talking about someone who has a real... REAL Upload capability (expressed in the silly big pretty numbers way) of a clean 512kbps and REALLY short ping time all over the place, not just to some magic address that makes it all look good...... I mean ping times with Australia!
And that is not published 512.... That is REAL 512 that is needed and with no activity - no browsing - no file sharing - Just Ultrapeering! Those who play at being Ultrapeers with lesser resources are helping no one.
Did someone mention Morpheus?

GregorK, have a good long dig through the BearShare Labs forum and you will find several references re: methods of doing exactly what you want... needs two machines obviously..... I will also have a dig and if I come up with some links for you I will for sure pass them on....
Or, just ask Aleixia (sp?) or Sephiroth or Vinnie......

That's the problem, people think they get something special, but they are simply helping the network if they have the bandwidth.
I have seen several people asking why they are not a ultrapeer yet, like it puts them in some sort of supercharger mode.
So much for marketing hype.
