HOW TO FIX: problems with new versions of OSX / firewall / launch

For those who are struggling with the minefield of solutions to various start up problems with new versions of OSX & LimeWire I was at my wits end when I finally tried absolutely every solution I could find and this worked for me:

1. Make sure you have the latest verion of Java. It's not as easy as it sounds to locate as there are so many updates and add-ons about so use this link:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...2release2.html

2. Make sure you have your firewall ON (see system preferences>sharing). where it says allow, go to NEW. Gnuttella WONT be in the drop down list on new Macs so from the drop down select other, and next to TCP & UDP numbers put 6346 and description, LimeWire.

3. Then, and this is the one that stumped me, restart in safe mode and repair permissions. (To do this hold down the SHIFT key immediately after the computer restarts & keep held down until you see the apple icon and the whirling cog. Then let go shift and you will get a password request for safe mode. Once up and running on the title bar click Go>Utilities>Disk Utility and on the first aid tab click 'Repair Permissions'. Then restart your computer.

MY COMPUTER WAS 2 HOURS OLD WHEN I TRIED AND FAILED TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW VERSION OF LimeWire AND I THOUGHT THERE WAS NO WAY THIS COULD BE MY PROBLEM BUT IT WORKED.

I'm not taking credit for the solution which I got from Lord Of The Rings post, it was just really hard to find so I'm hoping this will help people.

Good Luck

I Tried exactly what you did - No go!

This did not work for me at all.

That's because you're using Tiger not Panther. The same principle should apply if the problems started after updating your OS or Java. But you'd need the Tiger version of Java.

Java

I do have the newest version of Java for Tiger.

I think you're missing the point of this thread. This thread is re: people who can't launch LW after having updated their OS via apple's Softw Update program. Installing online can result in incomplete/corrupt installations or else, apple's online java installation has bugs. That's why for this particular type of problem, it's recommended to re-install Java using the "Offline" installer. This does not apply to connection problems but installation problems. Check the stickies for LW bouncing in dock to see what I mean. Since I'm a Panther user, I can't verify that the same problems occur in Tiger or that the same solutions apply. But chances are that they do. I'm aware of it fixing at least one person's problems in Tiger after giving them the link to the Tiger Java installer.

Java

Yes, I did use the off line installer of Java right off. I have destroyed alll preferences twice per each installation of even the new build that you referred to me. I have done EVERYTHING as instructed.

I notice a very large number of threads and messages regarding this firwalll problem and know that I am not alone!

Should I not be able to get mine to work by Friday, November 11, I will ask for a refund of payment for a non-working product. I have used Liemwire over a year with NO problems whatsoever and I know that it is at your end that it does not work properly. I hope that you can fet this bug fixed by Friday.

This is not Limewire. This is a public forum that caters for many gnutella programs & we are simply volunteers that help out on the forum. The forum site is not owned or run by Limewire or any other gnutella client program. Thus, such problems & demands should be put to LW's technical & sales support. All advice we offer is based on personal experience & from what we've learnt from helping others on the forum. :) We aren't experts! (or I'm certainly not.) lol :D

Panther users: Here's something I totally forgot all about: LW on OSX.3.9 fixed :0) (click on link)

problems launching LimeWire

Download and reinstalling Java seemed to do the trick. I agree, it seems almost trivial, but I've just upgraded to Tiger, and had to upgrade TechTool and Cocktail, run them, then download the Java update, as well as all the steps in amyturtle's post. That seemed to work for me.

OSX upgrade problems with java

I have had a with LW not working after upgrading my OSX to 10.4.6. I tried all the alleged fixes I could find on the LW site but to no avail.

Eventually I downloaded "Java131and142Release2.dmg" from the apple site and this fixed it immediately without have to do a safe start.

Recent connectivity problem on Apple Mac

I am experiencing difficulty in connecting to LW recently.
I'm running OSX 10.4 and have the latest version of JAVA (Java131and142Release2.dmg).
My problem is that when I launch LW (v.10.4.9) the front-end window appears but the softward sticks in the mode "trying to connect to the network".
This is a recent phenonomen for me; didn't have any connectivity problems beforehand.
I have read the advice from Amyturtle and set up LW in the firewall as per the advice there.
Any further advice?
