Need help downloading videos(Help playing files on a MAC)

I'm on a Mac and I want to download videos that I can watch on itunes, veoh player, or quicktime, but I don't know which files to download (ex. mp4, avi, mpg) I've tried downloading some videos under mp4, avi and mpg but I can't get ant of them to work.
