 VLC will launch from within LW just fine if you're using a LW Beta version 4.13.0 or later. FW versions are Beta versions (latest FW is 4.13.1.7)  So I guess there's been some change in the code for the Beta versions, but I wouldn't know what it is  You can see the LW changelog here (4.13.0 is out of sequence!) .
