sneaky sexy download

I downloaded a program yesterday called WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL from a site numbered 65 100 210 216 (3s) I think. It downloaded slowly but compltely BUT when I went to open it I found it was not that program at all but instead a sexually oriented series of web links (international to boot) which deposited a german sex website link into my tool bar in windows. It is in my windows dial up file.
I cannot get rid of this link, I got rid of all of the other unwanted junk but I still do NOT have my desired program.
Be aware of this download site. and I hope limewire is aware of it too and can do something about it. Can anyone help me get rid of this unwanted link? How do I procede?
Thanks,
David K

Peerless, you are right in all of your assumptions. I am new to limewire (very new) but I learned a lesson here. I will be more sensible in the future.
But I still have this german link to sex sites on my toolbar in windows (lower right hand corner of screen) How do I lose that? No matter what I do I get some message about can't delete it because a disk may be full. Is there a work around to get rid of pesky files?
Thanks for your comments and I would appreciate any other help you can give me.

evilmegaman August 3rd, 2002 09:20 PM

The file must be running in the backround. Can possibly be Worm or virus...

peerless... thanks for the advice. Not worried about wife seeing site since she rarely uses her computer let alone mine. She is a writer who prefers yellow paper and a flair. Hardly my worry. I am worried about having my computer invaded...a violation from a proprietary standpoint. How dare they!! I know this is naive but it really ****** me off.
I will use your advice to good advantage and thanks.

evilmegaman... if it is a virus, norton can't seem to find it and sqaush it. I have no idea what to do about a worm. never had one before. peerless gave me some leads on how to get the program out of there so I will proceded that way. Thanks for the input.

unwanted kiddy porn

I personally don't use limewire and it is permanently not allowed on my computer anymore. My young son was downloading songs and some sick @#$%& uploaded kiddy porn. I am now contacting the police about it. I don't think limewire would want to be known to have this crap distributed on their system. The names of the files where not cute, they said exactly what it was Illegal porn. If the adminstrators could do anything about finding out who sent it, I would be grateful. Whoever would take these pictures in the first place should be locked up and the key thrown away.

This is a big problem BUT this is NOT a Limewire issue, rather this occured due to unscrupulous folks using the Gnutella network... Limewire is just a program on your PC using a network shared by many different programs... the results you got were due to the acts of folks other than the Limewire developers... I have had the same effects occur to me with several other programs on the same network. Should you choose you can filter some of this stuff out by selecting Tools / Options / Filters / Keywords and checking the box marked FILTER ADULT CONTENT. Again Limewire is a tool used to share files on a network that is will continue to live without it.

Things to try

Hi,

I make no gurantees but...

For the 'tool bar' item try the following:
1.On the Windows Taskbar select the 'Start' button.
2.Next Select the 'Run' option.
3.In the box enter msconfig
4.Select the 'OK' Button.
5.Click on the 'Startup' tab.
6. Here is where you are sort of of your own. You need to look for an item that looks suspicious and then un-check the box. Write down the name incase you need to re-select it later.
7. Reboot your machine and see if the icon still appears.

I am not too sure of what your other symptoms are.
If you have a Desktop Item that you cannot delete try dragging it into the trash can. Then select empty on the trash can.

You mentioned an item placed in your dial up file. If you could describe this a little better I might be able to help.

Good Luck!

Couple of points here. Noone can upload to you, you have to click on the file and download it. How old is your son? If he's too young to know what those files with the sick name's were, then he shouldn't have been unsupervised on the net. Sorry.
Also, if the songs he was downloading are copyrighted, you do know that is stealing, and also illegal.
No, I don't condone kiddie porn. I just can't handle people who don't have the common sense to use the internet wisely and try to blame software for their lack of it.

Hi,

I am wearing asbestos pants so that you all may flame me.

This thread is splintered at best.

I would like to offer something for consideration that I heard a long time ago.

Hi there. I'm the "unreg" that posted directly above you here. I almost apologised for helping to drag this thread off topic even further, guess I should have.
I wasn't flaming the original poster.....not at all. I remember my first virus download very well..(it was a nasty bugger and finally ended in me throwing in the towel and reformatting the entire drive). Nope, never criticise a newbie who honestly needs help and advice. Probably could've saved me alot of aggravation.
I will, however, play critic to parents who blame software for their children downloading porn. (especially when the kid is more than likely doing something illegal to begin with)
OK, I feel a little better now. and since I can't help the original problem here - I'll just take a hike.

Sorry 'bout that.

I got the same problem after downloading a file on BearShare.
The file was a one of The Goon Show files, and I should have been wary of it as it was a zip file not an mp3 or wav.

It put a pacman like icon on my desktop and in my systray. on clicking it brought up a link to a German porn site. It was called x-finder i think. I put out a search and deleted all references to it but there is still a reference left

A folder called Favourites had been placed in one of my Widows Folders There is already one in there (with the two stars on)
most of the connected links were in there.

There is another folder which had a reference along with a strange file "ado" or something similar, the first file i deleted but when deleting the second two other files appeared. deleting these was ok but again, when deleting the ado three others appeared and they just went on multipling every time I deleted them so in the end I had to leave the ado file in.

I would sugest that if you ran a serch for x- it would brind up x-finder as I am not too sure about the finder.

You could also search for porn, erotic, Download-Porn and sex as I have also found links to porn sites since this came up.

I will try to find that folder with the multipling files in and post what I find.

Upload, download does it really matter. The point is, it isn't adult porn where consenting adult do what they want. They are
of age and if they want to do it, fine by me. This is young underage kids in these pictures who don't know what's going on. The sick people
who would take these pictures in the first place should be found and locked up where they belong in a cage like the
animals they are. If you have kids would you want to see your child doing these things, or your nieces and nephews and distributed on the internet?
Also high and mighty unregistered user, if you are not stealing stuff yourself why are you on Limewire in the first place?

signed unregistered user and not stealing a thing

Unregistered August 7th, 2002 06:54 AM

This is for unregistered user with the reply to kiddy porn who says no one can upload to you.
Hey you "smarty pants" here is a quote from Nutella's good citizen tips "The current shortage of bandwidth on the network is due to the fact that many users are taking up more bandwidth through downloads than they are giving back to the network through uploads. This is, in turn, responsible for the current difficulty in finding hosts that have enough available bandwidth for file uploads. I work on a different file sharing server and I can upload anything to anyone I want, but I do the right thing and ask first.
Now why don't you get your facts straight or just don't comment on things you know nothing about. You are nieve to think nothing is possible when you are hooked up to computers all over the world.
Oh, have you stolen any good files lately?

Those of you who showed interest in my problem of having this porn site (unasked for and unvisited) sitting in my task bar under windows desktop, I GOT RID OF IT. Did it the hard way
method: Noted the date and time of entry in "programs-find and then tracked that date and time visually and manually through windows explorer. When I found anything with that date and time after it I deleted it. Started my computer again and it was gone!
Thank you to all who tried to show me the way. I tried them all and the one I used was the only one that worked 100%.
Thanks again to you all.
Now can someone answer why I cannot complete a down load of a big problem even though I wait overnight for a requery to go through on Limewire. So frustrating!. Some go through just like that. Others. refuse to do so. A bit more help would be welcome here.
For those of you owrried about my marriage and a dirty website, fear not. Everything is just fine. Or as my college dasughter would say, COOL.

Hello!

Actortax you will probably find the answer to that problem in my post in this thread:

Julie Z August 7th, 2002 12:40 PM

I have found that even though many files are going through a "requery", if I type in the title again to search, they will sometimes start up again. Otherwise, they just sit there "requerying" (<----- is that a word?:D )

p.s. Glad you got your problem fixed!

Hello!

Exactly just as I stated in the other thread I mentioned above!.

The Requery function sure can be a good one if you learn how to use it correctly!.

And with a future implimentation of the Hash technology and the Requery technique it will sure become a very powerfull function in the future.

I await with interest - as it is at the moment the requery (ie, "you're doomed") function is just irritating and deceptive - searching again is FAR more likely to result in a workable connection than placing any faith in the requery option

LW is GREAT !! p2p software - it dosn't need to pretend that the requery option is anything more than a lazy high risk gamble (why not have a text box coming up when the cursor is over a requery telling the user just how many minutes till the next 'real' search)

Glad to hear you were able to delete the invader. I had the same problem with "x finder" ( sex finder is the listed name). It is a webdialing program that is geared to dialup users. It attaches to your modem and tries to give you "free" access to porn sites by dialing long distance 900 type phone numbers. (which cost many dollars). It is an insidious program that hides itself in a lot of places on your hard drive. It seems obvious that the creators of it don't want you to be able to remove it. I had to do about six searches to finally remove it and STILL have the name on my Systems config startup files. Although at this point it is harmless. I think that it has to be removed through the registy. .........I have also had some experiences with "overpeers" that promise one program but deliver something completely different. Be careful what you download over P2P sites. Check the file size and NEVER download an .exe file. ...I don't agree with the "stealing" insinuations though. I know that some people want to make file sharing synonymous with bank robbery, but it really is just file sharing. It's the same thing as going to the public library and borrowing a book or CD. You are not paying for it there either.

putting aside my earlier cheap smart **** comment - does anyone else get the feeling that the p2p community may become an essentially mac based community soon because of the sly moves towards installing the palladium chip in windows machines - I desperately need a new PC with a bigger hard drive etc but if all new machines end up coming with a chip blocking 'unauthorized' sharing of media files a substantial aspect of the exercise is crippled - the moves coming as they do in the context of the Hollings bill threaten the gnutella network of the non mac based community in a big way (its also worth noting that if palladium compliance eventually becomes mandatory as is being discussed in some quarters then macs would theoretically be deemed illegal)

maybe its a good thing after all that the new macs are so damn fine looking

I should've bookmarked the link - I got to it yesterday though via a google search on 'palladium chip' - I then was following links on 'The Register' pages - I think - I was kind've chatting to folks at the same time - I really do wish I'd kept the links cos I'm going to have to relocate them myself - but truly - google will take you to plenty of very disturbing discussions of dodgy deals being toyed with by microsoft, riaa, intel, amd etc

I just wish macs weren't so expensive here in Oz (like 2-3 times the price of microsoft/intel machines)

hope this helps a bit (let me know if you find out more)

Frankly, vlad, I think the new OS X is heading in the same direction as XP, just not as fast. At least in OS 9, the user has full control of the computer (Someone asked, "You mean you can just DELETE Internet Explorer??), the interface and file hierarchy so transparent, that there is no way a file such as this could hide. Even if the developer turned it into an invisible file, various search programs show such files and they can be made visible again. There is no such thing as a file you cannot delete on a Mac unless it is being used at the time.

MacTerminator August 13th, 2002 05:25 PM

I've been reading the links about Palladium\TCPA\Fritz (thanks guys).

They might just about get it to stick in [relatively] by-the-book countries like the US, UK, France or Germany (albeit after a lot of huffing and puffing on the part of consumers) , but my first reaction is that they're going to have serious problems implementing it other countries and I'm not just talking about China

In Spain, for example, you go into a shop to buy a computer and they often ask you "What software do you want me to install? Office? Photoshop? Freehand? Flash? Director? Premiere?" I've seen copies of Windows and Office collecting dust in computer stores because so few people ever buy them. Game consoles like the Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast simply haven't sold because of their uncopyable formats. The Playstation is normally sold with its copy protection inhibited (allowing copied game CDs) and the same will happen with the Playstation II once DVD recorders come down in price.

In this culture if someone buys a Palladium PC and goes home only to find that he can't install the copies of Office and Photoshop that his friend has made for him, I can guarantee that he'll go straight back to the shop and say "This computer doesn't work properly. What are you going to do about it?" and if the shop can't come up with a hack or a way round it, they ain't going to be selling many new PCs. It's as simple as that.

If Palladium were introduced, a two stream IT world would be created with Palladium compliant countries on one hand and countries with older or hacked computers on the other with all the chaos that that would entail.

Apart from that, it's the anti-globalisation campaigner's worst nightmare: as the articles said, it would severely reduce consumer freedom and choice [and privacy, if abused] and would give even more power and control to mastodontic corporations like Micro$oft, Intel, Sony, Universal etc.

And of course any OSs that resist will soon get squeezed out by major software manufacturers, film distributors and record labels - but as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have been getting more and more pally over the last few years, you can be pretty sure that OSX will be fully Palladium compliant before long anyway (sorry, Bad Vlad). So Linux will be the OS of choice in China and Spain then. :)

Freiluft August 13th, 2002 08:29 PM

Obviously if this becomes law in the US, Apple will be forced to manufacture TCPA-compliant computers for the US market. What I find even more frightening is that this is taking place in a country where people will march in the streets against, say, motorcycle helmet laws as an infringement of personal freedom.

I can already see a 1984-ish underground with rickety old OS 9 Macs and Pentium 3 boxes...

bad_vlad August 13th, 2002 09:57 PM

Here in Australia we have a government that considers toadying to the USA a matter of pride (we just can't wait to start bombing Iraq) and we have a communications minister who has trouble distinguishing a PC from a TV (for all the wrong reasons) so we'll be trying to get to the head of the line for PC fascism compliance (we already inhibit broadband use by putting in pace 'pay for data transfer fees' that mean you can use up your monthly 300 gig allocation in 30 minutes after which you pay punitive 'excess' fees) - so - I'm at a loss really I'll happily switch to macs if it means a year or two longer of using the internet the way I have/want to - but - here too - people will march in the streets to protect their right to have huge (pedestrian killing) 'bull-bars' mounted on their cars but when it comes to this they'll accept the line that 'this is good for you but bad for those evil internet pirates'

its all extremely irritating and I really don't see a viable/effective stance to adopt to oppose it

I recently had a similar situation happen to me. I was looking for a audio file & got a search result that matched my search description, but instead of a mp3 file, it was a zip file. I made the mistake of unzipping & opening it ( after doing a virus scan ). It unzipped into 2 files ( one of the files was named "open me first" )
, & the other "I believe" was named _x-finder.exe . If you see these files, don't open them, DELETE THEM!!! Although they are not seen as viruses, they will install a program that takes you out to porn sites & will seemingly register your e-mail account with these sites.

I'm not going to get into the right or wrong of file sharing. People have been copying songs as far back as I can remember.

This zip file was obviously planted to discourage file sharing, but I'm still on LimeWire.

Win XP Pro is not the only download that's corrupted. ...

On 9/2/02 I was able to download a bogus zip file which was supposed to be a Harry Potter audio file. Instead it was a file that unzipped to 2 exe files. The 1st file was named " CLICK-ME- FIRST.exe", the 2nd was named "setup.exe". If you open these files, you'll wind up with a porn-finding utility on your system. (none of these files will show up as a virus, but they may as well be).

As of 9/2/02 the ip address sharing this & other suspect zip files is 66.250.52.242.

Will this individual be sharing from this same address tomorrow?
Who knows? My question to you is - if there is a user on the network that is spreading distructive files, what can be done to stop it? Or is there a way to warn other users?

Just put him in your banned ip slot..
One way to find people like this, throwing corrupted files on the net is to search for ANYTHING (i do not mean the word anything but replace it with a word you like), and note all the 28K .mpg .asf .jpg .mp3 .html .vbs hits that are reported.
Some klients reports hits just for fun and points the hits to webservers in order to generate traffic. Just ban the MF from your client and he won't pollute you any more.

As for this perticular one, he has been on the net for a while now, polluting like a madman. Probably just some kind of lame *** 14-year-old kid being a wise-guy. Or maybe an important part in an international conspiricy where the americans aim to dominate thought all over the planet and start colonizing other starsystems and sh*t... I do not really know. Me too

Hey there,

I have also downloaded this file and made the mistake of opening because I didn't know. Now I can't seem to find anything on limewire without it. I am looking at size and everything. Really pissing me off. I will try all the solutions posted here though because I also have it in the task bar. I did go to deinstall in the program and it says restart which I will do as soon as current download is finished. Thanks for suggestions before I even asked.

How do I put him in my banned ip slot?? I have him in the search because anything that comes up GONZALES or I think it was YEEHA or something like that - anyway all caps with !!! is him/her.

Thanks
