I think we should put this in a sticky or something. It would be like Mac switch: "I have learned so much more with Search. I will never go back." :)

Murasame you ROCK!

Murasame...and everyone else who has been giving info in this particular thread.....THANK YOU!! I finally figured out how to raise my u/l d/l.
BUT IT DOES TAKE SOME WORK!!!!! (...to all the newbies like me... especially if you are not that computer literate)

Have read about a zillion posts/threads using the loved SEARCH and I will agree that the masses of identical questions didn't help my search. I gave up and then tried again about 20 times over the last few days. I was determined that I could find the info I needed here. ( I had been downloading at a rate of about 2-5KBS and all my uploads seemed to take 20.23.43.22!!!)

ANYWAYS.. Thanks!! I probably didn't do it perfect but it works good enough for me.

hi read murasame's posts but still not having luck currently have XP P3-700, 256 ram, 20 gig HD, limewire pro 4.2.6, a 2mbp/s connection or 2278kbp/s DL and 228 upload, settings are max DL slots 8, upload speed 30.19, upload per person 3, max upl slots 3 downloading from T1 connections 4 stars etc. at 0-10 kbp/s! I'm in a major city also so can't be far from servers exchange etc. Please help!

 *heavy sigh*

i've been reading. yep. and learning too. a big thank-you to all of you.... questioners, answerers, and resident gurus. :D

re ya'all's connection speeds:

a 70X mghz
25X RAM
2 20gig hd's
56k v92 modem
(am rural, upgrade is not feasible, nor practical....no dsl, etc, available)

i'm locked at a pathetic 26.4K dialup. that's on a good day. yes, it's the local rural telephone company as a provider. a monopoly.... so what's a gal to do?! ya'all were talkin OOB's in another thread, and i thought OBE's would possibly be faster.....for me.

so, i fussed with this darlin progy like this thread suggested. and i noticed two things:

folks are droppin in and lookin around.... at my .rm and .wav.... but nothing's being uploaded. LOL.... sorry, but at my speeds i've lil else to offer.
today is the first time i've actually d/l'd mp3s.

and i tried the adjusting of my upload and download.....
but, darlin folks.............
downloads for me are a speedy 1/2/and wow, the occasional 3kbs.

my question is..... how in the world of gopher mounds (my only hilly view in rural ND) can i balance my ULs and DLs?

i d/l'd LW this afternoon. yep. just today! and, my goodness, i've fallen in love with a program.

p.s.
is it possible to adopt a geek? sorry..... i digress.......

A 56 kbps modem is the equivalent of 8KB/s however there will be some loss due to overhead. So at very best you'd get a total of 7 KB/s but on average about 5 KB/s. That is the total upload & downld combined (unlike cable/broadband, etc. that have separate upld & downld speeds.) So that means you need to balance your upld & downld bandwidth. eg: say 3-3.5 down & 1.75-2 up. Unfortunately on dial up it's not possible to get better than that. I used LW on dial up for over 3 years (until 6 months ago.) We dial up users often have the hardest (rare ones) to get files ... I mean that in more ways than one lol.

For fastest downlds try not to downld too many at once. Keep it to one or 2 or perhaps 3 max. But at 3 you might be testing others patience. lol

Make sure you have your firewalls set up correctly for LW to pass thru both ways. See: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

After LW's been on for at least 30 mins or much longer, Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image If it's True then that's good & healthy. If it's False then you have a firewall that's not properly configured for others to upld from you.

I'm not sure what you mean there. That sounds like half the speed of dial up or if that's 26 KB/s then that must be high speed dial up which is about 5 times faster than standard dial up. Our ISP also has it. If that's the case, then you can afford to increase your downld & upld speeds. Say 20 down & 5-6 up or there abouts. Or Murasame will be able to give you a better idea of ideal setting. Uploading definitely helps with downlding & overall performance.

wal, dear Lord......

i did the tweaking and the saving on the DL and the UL. did the 1.75 and the 3. ya gotta know though.... that's being optimistic.
rechecked the firewall: all is well.

someone has actually uploaded a file from me! whoop whoop!
was begining to feel a mite parasitic thar....fer jes a lil bit though.

ahhh.... the 26.4k seemed so alien as to be surreal, eh? that's right up there with my initial reaction to this provider.
*wipes tears* 'tis true. it is half of the 56k. and tests (those good ol test thingies from MSN) timed it at a 18.?k.
my foray into rural ND has caused me to do some heavier drugs. doc's a city slicker, so he's clueless, but he upped the dose on the niacin. keeps the b/p down, ya know.

thank you for your speedy response and carin to help. you younguns are mity polite.

Ya know, I keep coming back to this thread and still have a question I need answered. How do I find out what my upl and dl speeds are?

-Windows XP
-Cable
-LW Pro

I am sorry...

When I first started reading this thread.. I though. OMG the nerve of that person telling someone their too stupid! (now you can say it return.. The nerve of soem people to critique others..) I am putting part of it down to the flu though. I have to say that this has been the most helpful unhelpful one yet. I have folloed the instructions (for once in simple enough terms even I couldn't miss it..) and while I am not getting any better results, I am to the point I am thinking it might be comcast not me.. Either way you have been incrediably patient in answering the same sort of question differently yet the same each time. I would almost swear you'd been a Teacher once, except I haven't had that many with that much patience.. :) I was going to ask what my expected download speed should be, but then realized that in my stupor right now I couldn't answer the basic questions, so I thought instead I would just change that back handed compliment into a front hand clap of "Thanks" for constantly trying to help us out.
