Scammed

I have been scammed by musicmembers. I wanted to upgrade WinMx which I did not know had been shut down. While I though I was upgrading WinMX it was actually to download LimeWire.

I filled in the registration form with all my details and was offered:

Lifetime Full & Unlimited Access with 25% off - $22.46USD
Pro Version Upgrade - Movie Codec Pack - $14.9****
NetSpyProtector Option - $9.88USD

An email came through with all the details of my Membership and and Order ID Number. All looks legitimate but a total scam.

Of course the credit card charge went through. I phoned the bank when I realised what a fool I had been but they could do nothing as I had authorised the charge.

The website for Musicmembers looks very professional but there are no contact details such as an email address or street address. The phone numbers given are probably linked to permanent recording so you never get to speak to anyone. They claim that you can be refunded if you are not satisfied with the product which is a joke if you can't contact anyone.

I have learned a whole lot through this experience. Although I now have LimeWire which works very well I could have downloaded it from this site without the cost. I don't have LimeWire Pro so I have paid for something I haven't got.

Should I report this to someone?

1. View back the previous posts (yeah I know there's a lot of them but a lot of good advice), here's one get your $$$ BACK!!! (music members)

2. Here's another for reporting: Known Scam Sites (click on link) & see the FBI link!!! ;)

BTW can you provide a url address to see if it's already been listed?!?

Thank you for your response and the comments made by other members.

The offending web site is: http://www.membersarea.com/login.asp

I did find it in your list of rogue sites after searching this forum for some answers. Thanks for that as it was the vital piece of information I needed to confirm what I suspected.

As I am in Australia it is very difficult to telephone them and this is the only point of contact listed on the site. On one of their pages there is a box which says: we are currently offline, click here to email us. Well it takes you to a page that doesn't exist.

I have written off the money for the moment but I will be looking at my bank statements very closely and the bank has been notified about this.

I will report it through the FBI link as anything that helps to stop internet abuse is a good thing.

It's amazing, we can land a man on the moon but keeping the internet 'clean' is beyond us at this point in history. It's been a very valuable learning experience for me and I really appreciate being able to report it through this forum.

Dodgy site warning.

The site that ripped me off (38 pounds sterling! AAAAGHH!)

My main concern is whether anybody has had other amounts of money debited from their accounts after giving their card details?

The toned-down Christmas massacre

Hi.
It isn't just the turkey, there'll be a few potatoes, carrots, and shedloads of beer feeling my wrath.
But no real casualties.

Unfortunately, I've written off my payment, it's too much messing around, so I cancelled my debit card so they can't take anything else from my account on a whim.
As I work in a bank, I'd recommend that anybody else stung in this way to do the same, as if the scammers do try to draw off a debit card after it's been cancelled, the transaction request will go straight through the bank's fraud dept.

This means any future transactions from said dodgy company go through the bank in anybody's name, they'll all be looked into, legitimate or not.

That'll teach 'em!

That's an interesting site you came up with Only A Hobo. lol :D

BTW did you report the site to the FBI site link: http://www.ifccfbi.gov
The sooner they're taken down the better. I wouldn't have given up on it so soon. I had scam people take money out of my credit card years back months after concert tickets I booked. A simple telephone call. I was reimbursed not so long after.

Any site that says unlimited is bound to be a scam site. OR any program name & 2005 or the year it is after it is also a scam site.
