XoloX connect error - Hostslists.txt

1 Attachment(s)
Dear Users,

We noticed that our initial Gnutella hosts aren't working ok. (again :( ). Sorry for this inconvenience..

Characteristics:
XoloX announces : ' Can't connect to network' when you start the application.

Work around:
Totally close XoloX (also in the taskbar).
Download this attachment and place it in your xolox directory.
Restart the application.

Impact on longer term:
Once XoloX gets a stable connection, it will build a hostslist itself.

Request:
To keep this hostlist updated, I would like to ask to other XoloX Users to place their hostlist.txt in this thread too. Thanks..

Greets,
Pasman

Jude September 18th, 2001 08:49 AM

Hey Pasman,

Here is my current hostlist (20:19 GMT+1), if you wanna try. I had no problems with gnutella today.

Pasman, what is the purpose of the hostlist and why is it not full human readable? Thx, Moak

Unregistered September 18th, 2001 11:34 AM

Tried uninstalling/ reinstalling, tried the fix, still not working

Hostlist.txt is a host cache you keep to make connecting to the network faster. I assume it's not human readable so people can't use it to easily harvest G'net user's IPs. (Using XoloX anyway)

Moak September 18th, 2001 12:19 PM

Re

Hi Seeker!

Harvest gnutella IPs, I understand. Hmm it's much more efficient to ask a gnutella host cache for harvesting and bad spys can use 'netstat' anyways. Security by obscurity, does not help for my taste but limit some features a human readable hostcache would give (prefered hosts trade with friends or LAN). However... :)

Another thingy, which are Xolox host caches ("initial gnutella hosts"), wouldn't it make sense to let the users edit the gnutella host caches too?

Back to coding.... CU :)

candynickel September 18th, 2001 03:19 PM

What is a directory?

how do I put something into the directory?

mvoosten September 18th, 2001 03:25 PM

BTW 1.12 let you enter a host manualy in the preferences window.

Unregistered September 19th, 2001 06:04 AM

Moak September 19th, 2001 12:36 PM

Does not work?

Still problems to connect + the update of the hostlists does not work.... ?
Hmm, maybe this helps: Follow this thread

Unregistered September 20th, 2001 01:01 PM

Whenever I try to download the fix file for xolox, my computer opens it like a text file. I was wonderingif there is a setting somewhere that I can use to fix this/change this to make my computer accept teh file.

Moak September 21st, 2001 03:04 PM

If you have the posibility to SAVE instead of OPEN, then try save.
If not: Just ignore that it is opened as a text file (it is a text file), save it on your desktop/hardisk (File - Save).

Now continue the normal procedure (explained by pasman) for replacing the files.

Unregistered September 26th, 2001 09:06 AM

instaled the file ran xolox no change, installed the file ran xolox worked. but then this restart solution worked before so not well tested by me.

Either way the app is much faster and better results than limewire the other gnet app i used.

Unregistered September 26th, 2001 06:15 PM

Worked fine for me.

file stream error

I can search fine, when I try to d/l I get a file stream error in windows xp. Used to work fine till I moved from my d to c drive. I removed all of the old xolox files and reindtalled 1.12.

Moak September 27th, 2001 07:30 AM

Re: file stream error

File stream error is discussed in another thread (see here).

Note:

The as stated in another thread, but probably more relevent here:

The reason XoloX's internal host connections aren't working, to the best of my knowledge, is that you are hard coding IPs to connect to:

IP = resolves to (alias) = bearshare's ability to conenct.
63.211.153.119 = galena.gnutelliums.com = timeout
64.61.25.139 = host3-limewire.colo.ny.np1.net (router.limewire.com) = timeout
208.239.76.100 = (unable to resolve) = refused
216.231.59.208 = vawlk.dsl.speakeasy.net = timeout
208.245.164.155 = boss.fileflash.com = refused
24.95.35.22 = (unable to resolve) = timeout

Only 2 of there are identifyable to me as common host cache sites, and none of them could be connected to when I tried.

It would be MUCH better to store the aliases like connect(1-4).bearshare.net, router.limewire.com, etc. in case the IPs suddenly need to change, so you don't have to alter your software to keep up with the changes.

Moak September 27th, 2001 05:41 PM

Hi Seeker,
thx for your good investigation work. Damn, it gets boring to repeat it, but's true. :)
Good to know, what happens and how Xolox gets his initially IPs. So I think one of the most important feature in a new version could be: not to hardcode host caches, no IPs as you said and store them into a file e.g. 'hostchaches.txt'.

About your question: Setting registry entry 'firsttime' to 'true', does not help, actually it is equivalent with deleting the complete Xolox branch... both results in setup setting from scratch, no plausabilty checks are done for hostslist.txt.

Bye, Moak

PS: Aren't more programmers willing to offer the XOlox team assistance in coding and is the Xolox team interested?

CelestialBody September 27th, 2001 06:36 PM

I've been having trouble connecting to the network for about two weeks now. I've checked all my LAN settings through the University here, I don't know what's wrong.

Pasman September 28th, 2001 12:36 AM

Hi Moak & the Seeker,

The initialhost list will be enlarged in the next version.
We are still testing the ip-naming adres option. This is resulting in some problems (with DNS convert) when people use firewalls.

Thanks for the analyzing job !!

Moak September 28th, 2001 02:36 AM

Hi Pasman,
I think the problem must be somewhere else. DNS is a basic item for internet, internet access without DNS is impossible... at least in a "norma enduser" environment. Even on standard firewalls DNS works, so when you have a working internet access (aka http), you can be sure the DNS is working too.

--- added 2001-10-01 ---
PS: While playing around with DNS today (stupid windows shares won't connect to //IP/share)... I thought about IP coded hostchaches in Xolox. Maybe you wanted to speed Xolox startup? If the cached hostslist doesn't provide enough speed for connection to gnutella network, store the resolved host cache IPs together with the hostnames in a 'hostcaches.txt'. Use the IPs for fast startup and update the IPs from the names whenever they changed. Just my 0.02 Euro.

Hostlists.txt

Pasman

Been reading with interest the thread about hostslist.xt. As a new user I have put a posting on the support section (New User Queries...still waiting a response on that) but I think this thread may answer one of my queries.

Can you tell me what the hostlist.txt file actually does? I assume that if I had put an entry in the add host window this would have created a hostslist.txt file as I didn't have that file.

I've now installed one of the hostlist.txt file I found on the thread but I couldn't see any visible change when running xolox.

Be grateful for a quick explian if you can.

Thanks

Moak September 28th, 2001 03:04 AM

What is the hostslist for?

This question has allready answered by Seeker at the beginning of this thread (see the first page - click on the "1" on the top of the page now). The "Add host" feature does currently not work correct, but it's function is allready described in another thread ...and now also there.

HTTP P2P

Hello All,
Xolox doesn't work for me as well, even after I used the host file. I suppose my network configuration doesn't allow me to use a network without HTTP/FTP proxy. Kazaa doesn't work either. Does anybody know how to configure Xolox to make it connect and/or any other program that is working entirely through HTTP.

Thank you.

Rinz September 28th, 2001 08:42 AM

XoloX

Hi Pasman,

It did work very good, after 2 days:"Network connection error". tried everything but still nothing. What next?

Re: HTTP P2P

Use a Socks proxy if available or try tunneling Socks through HTTP? Many companies/schools restrict firewall traversals to http requests only. Socks2HTTP provides a SOCKS server, tunneling connections through a existing HTTP proxy (e.g. squid). This tunelling definitely is more geek stuff (and maybe forbidden in your place due to heavy traffic or possible copyright violations in P2P). Feel free to try (and plz give a feedback):

Hope it helps, Moak

Network Connections ( I think...)

You guys are talking about things waaaay over my poor old head, but...
I keep getting a popup in the main screen that asks if I want to reconfigure my network connection.

Doh?

I'm on a DSL modem via USB. When I signed up, I chose LAN as my connection.

Did Da' Kid screw up?

Should I have selected "connected to the computer via a modem"?

Do I have to sacrifice a sheep?

Da' *** Gon' On Here?

All replies gratefully accepted.

Me.

Does not work?

Still problems to connect + the update of the hostlists does not work.... ?

Make sure you are using Xolox V1.12 and using a new hostslist.txt!
Hmm, maybe this helps: Follow this thread

irish19144 September 30th, 2001 07:07 AM

Success!

Thank you, Moak. It worked like a charm.... apparently I had a corrupted or incorrect hostsfile but as soon as I wiped it and installed yours the program loaded all hosts and is chugging along quite happily.

Quite a nice program, incidentally....
my compliments to the chef(s).

Hostslists Eroor

I have tried 7 or 8 times to add hostslist to my directory but without any success. I cannot find any hostslist.txt files ....old or new........and all I have in the directory is a file called Templist.txt ...... but is totally empty. I have V1.12....dowmloaded

Any suggestions ....please

Hostslist.txt saving

Try this... assuming you're in Windows...

Go to Moaks post above awhere he says "try this thread" and look for his attachment of "hostslist.txt". Right-click on that and choose "save target as". When the download window comes up, choose to save it into your Xolox directory directly or into My Documents. If you choose My Documents, as soon as it is downloaded, open My Documents and drag/drop the file into the Xolox directory.

Shut down Xolox and restart... give it a few minutes to download all the hosts in Moak's list.... it's pretty extensive.

Hope that helps!

Aaargh!

By 'no joy', do you mean you are downloading nothing or is there some other symptom?

If you type' let's say, "palmer" into the search bar, you should see a tab come up with that word on it and in short order you should start seeing files appearing in the selection window.

Providing your program actually has checked all hosts ( and there's over 400 in Moak's list, which takes a few minutes) then all should be well. If not, please give us a few specifics ( can't see any files, can't transfer between task items, can't see any transfers, don't like vanilla ice cream, etc.)

Remember that even tho you may have a file listed in your transfer window, there's a good possibility that the computer upon which that particular file resides is down for the nite ( some people still do that) and that Xolox will find and start downloading the file as soon as the resident computer reconnects to the net.

Sail on!

This is it... Moak's Hostslist.txt file.

If you can't use "save as" after right clicking on it, try "save target as" and save it directly into your Xolox directory. Shut down program and restart.... check out the bottom taskbar and you should see it loading/checking hosts.
