I'm not sure it needs to be removed. LW should be able to reinstall over the top of earlier versions (so long as they're not older than version 4.4). You could try using this utility http://www.ccleaner.com/ which does a decent job of removing redundant keys.

LOTR - Magnet Handlers

Hi Magnet, you would think it would just install over it but it doesn't. It's as if the Handlers key is locked up - in safe mode logged in as Admin, I cannot delete it or change permissions, I do not have access to it. Magnet yes, Handlers no.

I didn't want to reinstall Windows just to use Limewire, but it looks like I have to . I think this is ultimately a Windows issue moreso than a LW or Java issue. I am using Media Centre 05 if that explains anything to anyone.

Also, I've used ccleaner too, as I'de seen you recommend that in another posting. It finds lots of stuff to fix in the registry, but not this Magnet key thing.

I'd really like to avoid reinstalling Windows if anyone has any brilliant ideas!!

How about renaming it?
:Smilywais:

Yep, did that. Can't rename it as I don't have correct permissions, otherwise I could delete it.

Sorry I'm not a windows person for complex issues. (macman :D) But if you reboot using a startup disk such as cd, dvd, floppy or whatever, the permissions will be totally changed & those that belong to the unbooted system will not apply. ;) At least that can work on the mac. But also depends on exactly which system file.

Thanks LOTR

Thanks LOTR anyway for your help, I appreciate very much the effort you put into trying to find an answer to this problem for me - I've checked with other sources and no one anywhere is able to help beyond reinstalling, so I bought a second HDD yesterday and will line that up as my weekend project... Oh well...

I used to be a Macman back in the Classic days, pre Win 95, and then got cheap and went Intel. Now everything's changed in both camps around ease of use, software compatibility, etc., but one thing remains the same:

Windows sucks!!

Have a great day,

Bill

I have tried everthing

I have installed , uninstalled, tried the other installation and I keep getting a corrupt installation and am not able to get anything to work. This is rediculous.

Go to add/remove programs & remove your old Java version. Now reinstall Java JRE & make sure that you use the manual (offline) installer.
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Now reinstall LW using it's offline installer
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

See if that fixes things:)
