 Though you believe that it is a Java problem (did you also try some recently older versions such as 1.5.0_05 or _04? Always use the offline installers), could it be that an Antivirus/ AntiSpyware/ or any other security program you have installed blocks both application from executing?? Because, that's what it sounds for me.......just a guess though.
