![]() Hello, I just bought a brand new desktop tower because my previous one died. Its an Acer with Vista software. I have been trying to download Limewire for 4 days straight now and it wont let me. Each time I get to the installation point, it says "Unpacking Files" and wont go any further. I even let it do it overnight thinking maybe it takes forever, but it still didnt progress any further than it was when i went to bed. I have tried uninstalling/installing a total of about 15 times and I cant seem to get it to work, can anyone please help? This is sooooo frustrating ![]() Thank you, Amy |

![]() Use this cleanup technique for both Java & LW: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/333278-post2.html ![]() ![]() BTW if you are using Vista, you need to set the installer to run as admin, then do same for LW after installing. |

![]() I get the following error when i try and open LimeWire... can anyone help? I tried doing the list of things given above, but i couldnt get it to uninstall... ![]() For Vista you need to set both the installer, then LW to run as Admin. If that doesn't make any difference, go to properties & change compatibility mode to XP. Also delete any LW preferences if any. Fixes for Limewire (click on blue link) Correct way to uninstall LW is via Start menu -> All programs -> LW -> Uninstall. Else go to program folder & find uninstaller there. You tried those steps in my first post but couldn't get it to uninstall? What was the error message? How did you try to uninstall it? I'm wondering if it's because it was not set to run as Admin as it needs to be for Vista. |

![]() I guess i dont know how to set the installer & LW as admin - it doesnt ask?! I appologize I do not know much about computers. Right now my internet wont even work at home so I am unable to try and download LW. I couldnt get it to uninstall because it wasnt listed in my control pannel under the list of things downloaded. When i went into the actual LW folder, there wasnt and uninstall listed there either. I attempted to just delete everything but it wouldnt let me. As of the look of things now, I most likely will be returning the computer and buying a new Mac laptop. Ive never had ANY trouble setting up a new computer/downloading LW & various other things. Do a lot of people run into this with Vista?!? |

![]() brand new computer eh? I bet most all people aren't aware that many computers come loaded with spyware that they are paid to include which is why the machines are so cheap... run adaware se and spybot search and destroy and remove a lot of nasties...

![]() Well People As one that checked his PC's HD many moons ago, when I just bought it, I can confirm that most PCs bought from the likes of PC World (I don't know the US equivalent) have spyware pre-installed. However, because this junk is pre-installed Ad-Aware and Spybot cannot remove them, they see this rubbish as installed apps. The only way to clear this rubbish out is via manual deletion by visual inspection. Slow and cumbersome but the only effective way. The first thing to do is look out for for unknown "exe" files that are not in your windows folder, then for each one you find google it to find out what it exactly does. If it has no legitimate purpose then delete it. The next thing to watch out for is "send mail" files, you will be surprised at the number of these files scattered throughout your C:\ drive. And finally, if you have a good firewall then use it to watch for applications requesting access to the Internet. Again, you will be surprised at the most unlikely of apps trying to sneak out while your doing other things, e.g. I caught Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) trying to access the Internet. If I had left my firewall in the default option I would not have known anything about it. Be smart, be safe. UK Bob Last edited by ukbobboy01; July 19th, 2009 at 10:58 PM.
