Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Angry STOP thief!!! Hit and run...

First off - NEWBIE alert!

Ok that said, here's the problem. Several I.P. have been zipping into my files, grabbing stuff and are GONE. This happens so fast that I thought at first that it was a connection error.

I have the latest LW Pro and etc and share about 4500 files in a lot of different categories. There's no plan to the hits and it happens at different times of the day but now I use the Monitor feature quite a bit. I've been able to write down a few of the I.P.'s and add them to my Block Host feature and viola' in a minute or less they're back on my system with an I.P. address exactly the same except for the last few numbers.

So I searched your forums over and over and couldn't find a topic that looked right. What I did find was the following:

Question

I got the same kind of thing from another IP (200.35.104.152) today. Tried to download just about every song i have. i added the IP to my banned list, but it didn't matter, so I traced it to see where it came from.. somewhere in the middle of Venezula lies the heart of evil.. jk, but seriously I think it might be due to a server that scans mp3 files for name/size to add to filter blocks on other programs (napster, aimster, etc.) and then again, it might be our old friends the RIAA stealing VALUABLE dl spots from ppl willing to share this way instead of .. RIP napster

This sounds very much like my problem but I can't find the answer. and the post is dated 2001 so I didn't reopen it.
Additionally, I don't have a tracer as mentioned above but it seems as if that won't do any good either.

Is there a way to stop these people. The other day I got so frustrated that I quit downloading the song I was after, deleted all of my shared files, saved the changes and went back to Monitor and the frightening thing was that they were still doing it although I banned their I.P. AND quit sharing.

Does anyone know how they do this? Does anyone know how to stop it. Does any remember that I'm a newbie so GO EASY ON ME PLEASE!

Thanx,

Hi Marc

Welcome, and nice first post: the preparation is much appreciated.

Some of what you say sounds normal. The "quick grab" might just be for a piece of the file--quite normal when you and many other hosts are providing the files. Such uploads show as "complete" but the % is less than 100%

When someone browses you, they may choose to download many of your files. They are usually new users who don't realize that 3 at a time is considered normal, but repeated attempts at more, trigger the automatic "Banned greedy client" treatment. Most of my files go to such folks, so I have set my prefs to allow them to download 10 at a time so they can avoid getting automatically banned by my settings.

However, the repeated attempts to get files that are unavailable is old behaviour from poor clients. Current clients will not repeatedly try for a file once it is unshared. Check the Vendor column of the monitor pane to see what version someone is using to get your file.

btw, you don't have to delete the files to unshare them. In your Library, there are many ways to stop sharing a file. Check out the menus there and see what else you get by right-clicking a file.

Easiest way to avoid paranoia about the copyright cartels is stay away from their junk

Steif:

Thanks for kudos. I've learned my lesson from other forums that basic knowledge of the topics is essential and simple stupidity isn't tolerated. I try to make my point clear and as detailed as possible. In addition to that, thanks for the quick reply as well. Some places take days just to review it and then pass around before someone decides to take a crack at it.

Anyway, you're saying the 'quick grab' is ok and just let it go, right? I've changed my setting to let them download 10 at a time as you suggested and I will watch the Monitor section to see how that works. I didn't know about the automatic 'banned' feature but I'm glad it's there. Can that be configured somehow? If not, no bother.

You can tell this one's a newbie, who doesn't know to right click on menus to see additional instructions? Take me to the land of DUH and crown me King.

Again thanx

btw--I'm not recommending allowing each person to get 10 at a time: that was just an example.

I share photos that most users aren't interested in getting. So, when one interested party comes along, the usual default settings aren't good for that person.

If my files were really popular and large, I'd change my settings to only allow one upload per person. That way a single user couldn't monopolize my uploads for long periods.

The key is to keep doing what you are doing: monitor the uploads to get a sense of how best to allow your shares to get out there. If in doubt, revert the preferences to the defaults (there's a button to do so in the options).

Cheers

Just an additional suggestion that other members may or may not like:

Do you have a firewall?

A firewall will protect you from random and malicious connections as well as anything someone may try to download to your PC, like a worm or Trojan.

I note that this is not really what you are complaining about but it is better to be safe than sorry.

PeerGuardian 2.0

This freebie software is similar to a mini firewall but, unlike a firewall, it protects your PC on the IP level. It stops various IPs (companies) getting into your PC via port 6346 and, the part you could be interested in, you can specify a range of IP addresses, by putting in the first and last IP address, you want to keep out of your PC.

So all in all, PeerGuardian 2.0 seems to be the software for you, available from here:

Marc's post reminded me of something that happened to me once. I have my settings set for one upload per person at a time. It works for me.

One day I discovered a host downloading 5 files off me at a time, and they were transferring very fast. As I recall, this was the only host downlading from me at the time so I shut down and re-booted. This has not happened since and was a trifle scarry.

Marcs comment " I've learned my lesson from other forums that basic knowledge of the topics is essential and simple stupidity isn't tolerated" would be a fine introduction to newbie innitiation:

And I don't think we have really answered his question "Does anyone know how they do this?"

Are you sure they weren't simply downlding the hash tree file. It can give the impression people are downlding from you when they're not downlding the actual main file at that time but just the hashtree. Some seem to take longer than others sometimes (perhaps due to file size/bonus id tag info or whatever. ) I was initially confused by that when people down the list in a queue started downlding from me. This person may have selected to downld many of your files simultaneously. Just a thought!

LOTR,

Hash tree? Is that the same as the file tree? Feel free to correct my ignorance. I'm here to learn.

Only A Hobo,

Glad you liked my comment about learning a lesson. Ops/Moderators have a lot to do other than sitting around waiting for them to get their elbow out of their ear and do a little groundwork first.

How I learned it was as a NooB on a site forum looking for a certain file. I posted it in the wrong forum. Then I posted it wrong in another forum, the topic was unclear, the information I was trying to get was weak and I really got them p/o'd. Did I bother to search for an answer? Why should I when someone will simply tell me what I need to know - really bad assumption that!! The webmaster spammed me for days with 'WAKE UP' messages.

Lesson learned. LOLOL

Maybe I should make that my tagline.

Marc001

And I don't think we have really answered his question "Does anyone know how they do this?"
