You mean u can't read 榆 ? Yeah hakisackman I don't know what's happened there. The most likely reason you're having problems is that you're connecting via the school network right? They'll have their own firewall & many schools deliberately block p2p use. However, see this! Which is in part related. Anyway check this thread & its link. Hope this helps. |

Note however that LimeWire supports authentication on proxies only in Socks v4 and v5; secure authentication on HTTP proxies still does not work, and is quite complex to implement; there exists some third party tools that allow proxying locally connections to external proxies, to perform secure authentication on that remote proxy. There are tons of Internet connection methods. LimeWire developers make many efforts to support these, but this is a complex task. LimeWire works and is heavily tested to support the most common configurations, including direct Internet accesses, accesses through NAT routers and personnal firewalls. But what an organization can do on its LAN router to filter Internet accesses is out of control of LimeWire. Only your LAN administrator can help if you are in troubles, to get details about the exact configuration to setup (note also that some organization firewalls are extremely strict and won't let you do anything than basic HTTP for browsing (often through proxies), and even your emails must pass through a local central SMTP/POP3 service which is the only one allowed to connect to the Internet). In some cases, the configuration of proxies is hidden to you (you can't even get details about them in your Internet Explorer settings, or there's a enterprise "group policy" that restrict accesses to these parameters, that are distributed by the router automatically to the hosts connected on the Internet. If this is the case, only your LAN administrator can help you get the details. May be these details are hidden on purpose, because there's an enterprise policy that its Internet connection must only be used for your work, excluding all personnal activities: such company should have informed you about it, and your usage may be logged. Don't use LimeWire at your work to get access to resources on the Internet, unless you are given the authorization, and allowed to perform such activity during your working time. Such unauthorized usage places you at risk of being fired or fined in a court by your company: this is not YOUR network access, and a company pays for your working time, so you MUST comply to that local organization rules. Even at home, with your "own" Internet access, you must still comply with the ISP's terms of service, and you must take your own responsability about what you can and cannot do according to the TOS contract. |
this worked for me i did this thing where i clicked on the link and opened this file and all of a sudden i am running turbo charged again! thanks man |

Windows XP SP2 builtin firewall settings If you have recently downloaded and installed the Windows XP Service Pack 2, your connection to the network may fail now with the default settings of the builtin firewall. (1) If you already have another internal software firewall installed, or an external firewall in your router or on the Internet gateway for your LAN, you may simply avoid many problems by disabling the Windows XP SP2 builtin firewall (using 2 successive firewalls will just make your life more complicate: use and ajust the settings of the main firewall which has a direct connection on the Internet; Note that there's no security enhancement when using two local firewalls on the same hosts; The Windows XP SP2 firewall is still in beta and will prove its stability only in a few months, most probably in 1 or 2 years, and it also depends on another Windows service that you must enable, and is exposed to other security risks: The UPnP agent. (2) In other cases or if you still want to maintain the builtin firewall, you need to add "exceptions" for the ports needed to get incoming connections or incoming results via UDP in LimeWire. If you have not changed the default LimeWire settings, LimeWire expects to see incoming connections and UDP query/hits traffic on local port 6346. So you'll need to add the following exceptions in the Windows Firewall settings: * Name: "Gnutella (TCP)", Port 6346, protocol TCP * Name: "Gnutella (UDP)", Port 6346, protocol UDP * With some security configurations you may also need to allow the "limewire.exe" application to access the Internet (this can be done the first time you see the Windows Firewall alert that asks you whever LimeWire should connect to the Internet). The second one is needed to get faster results when querying the network, and allows better sharing of your files. |
My 2 cents I use Windows XP. I downloaded the new service packs before downloaded Limewire. I was able to connect fine for 3 days. i didnt have to do any disabling or firewall stuff it just worked. I upgraded to Pro, I figured I might as well support the program I am using. Now after downloading Pro I cant connect and have tried all the things the 2 threads suggested. I disabled everything , I added all the ports and such, still nothing. I even uninstalled Zonealarm, disabled the XP firewall and still added Gnutella, and Limewire and jawa to the exceptions list even tho it was disabled. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Pro. I checked Norton to see if it was blocking anything. I cant connect. Obviously my ISP isnt blocking me if I was able to connect before Upgrading to Pro. Any help is appreciated. |
more of my 2 cents I have also noticed that sometimes even when it says "connecting" at the bottom, some of the songs are downloading. I let it set for 30 mins or so trying to connect and I will get 2 or 3 songs downloaded, and the rest say need more soarces I cannot however add anymore searches because when I try it says I need to be connected. Can anyone explain this to me? |

i am going to try the beta, just to be able to DL music. But it would be nice if the one I paid for worked! |
There is a beta Pro version. Pro users can download it from their personal download page. |
Warning sent to XP SP2 users: Microsoft still delivers SP2 as a beta for developers, and there are various issues that are solved differently in each of the different locales. There are small adjustments to the builtin firewall that varies depending on the time when you installed SP2. For now SP2 specific components will not be automatically updated with Windows Update (which will be delivered automatically and supported officially by Microsoft only in several months). During that time, we won't recommand to users to upgrade to SP2, unless they know how to configure the rules of its builtin firewall. Note that this firewall service in SP2 highly depends on the availability of the UPnP components and the DCOM/RPC DCE port mapper. It may not work as expected or may not be configured correctly if either is disabled (there are several still unresolved security issues in DCOM/RPC DCE and in the UPnP and in the Microsoft XML Parser components that may make this firewall fail in its configuration.) If the firewall can't be configured or its configuration cannot be read by the firewall, the firewall may run in its default mode, disabling the support of incoming ports you have configured. I had such troubles in SP2 despite I had configured the necessary ports in its interface. If you still get into troubles, first disable the SP2 builtin firewall, and run the network connection wizard to reconfigure it and restart it (the Windows network wizard should restart the necesarry services). Then remap the needed ports. It worked for me. Don't forget to open the Windows Event Log Viewer in the Administration Tools, to see if some services fail to start appropriately. Also, there are issues if you have used in the past the ZoneAlarm firewall. When installing SP2, ZoneAlarm may have some of its components incorrectly registered, blocking your Internet connections after some random time. Another issue is that the ZoneAlarm uninstaller did not remove all of its components in the past, and upgrading to SP2 reactivated some of them, making your Internet connection work unreliably. You can solve this problem by reinstalling ZoneAlarm (the current version, even the trial version), and uninstalling it if you don't need it anymore, as its uninstaller has been corrected. More generally, avoid using both ZoneAlarm and the SP2 firewall at the same time. Choose one of them only: either disable the SP2 firewall and reconfigure ZoneAlarm or uninstall cleanly ZoneAlarm and configure the SP2 firewall. There does seem to exist some problems when both services are activated locally on the same system. You can experiment such problems even out of LimeWire, when just browsing the web or checking your emails; in Internet Explorer, a web page may be extremely long to appear, or you will see a static page showing the ZoneLabs logo and some tricky comments about how to "solve" the problem. If this happens to you (notably if you have tried in the past a trial version of ZoneAlarm and then you thought you had uninstalled it), you'll need to reboot XP and reconnect ot the Internet at least to download the latest version of ZoneAlarm just to reinstall it before uninstalling it cleanly. |
weird I am assuming everyone else is having the same connection problems as me. None of my roomates can connect either, it lingers on poor for a second, then goes back to connecting. I brought my laptop to my neighbors house and i was turbocharged in seconds. I dont understand it. HELP!!! |
Made the fix work on xp I got the fix to work in xp. Here are the steps I took. I don't know if you can ommit any... My XP firewall was turned on, and I'm using verion 4.0.7 1) Followed Limewire's instructions to add Gnutela port 6346 (under Firewall "Advanced" tab) 2) Under Firewall "Exceptions" tab, added TCP and UDP port 6346 (using "Add Port"). 3) Under Firewall "Exceptions" tab, added Limewire software (using "Add Program"). 4) Deleted my preferences folder (.limewire) 5) Opened Limewire, and it connected. Hope this helps! Benchwalla |
I tried those steps and I still can't get a connection. The odd thing is it worked fine until a day or two ago. I haven't installed anything prior to those days and I've had SP2 since it was released. I don't understand what the problem could be. |
I also noticed that if I completely turn off the firewall I still can't get any kind of connection. |
You guessed it.. connection problems. I came here in search of possible solutions for the problem regarding Limewire not connection after installing the new Service Pack addition. I should have not installed it in the first place and checked forums to see people have problems with it, even the eBay forums were warning not to install it. I've read Benchwalla's solution and will try that soon. I currently have disabled the XP firewall and even disabled Zonealarm when opening Limewire, and have added Limewire to the 'safe-list' on each program. Not to mention I have cable broadband with no problems so far. Let's see if this works *fingers crossed* |
xp sp2 - You guessed it.. connection problems Here's some links: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=27403 http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...7313#post97313 (bug fix) http://www.download.com/Downloaders-...1-5127017.html Just some ideas. |
Thanks for those links! ^.^ Only problem now is I have Limewire saying that it can't open necessary files since my Operating System doesn't support the characters used or something. At least it's actually connecting after downloading that patch, wow! Any one else with a smiliar problem about the OS? I downloaded the Beta version of Limewire by the way, like advised. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. |
OK, I have tried EVERYTHING stated, and the only improvement I got was that it stayed connected for half a second more :) When I download the purger thing, it says its not a valid Win32 program... Seems like such a bad combination of bad luck for me. Just plain ****... now i gtg uninstall service pack 2 |

We test it against Windows XP SP2, Windows 98, Linux, Mac OS X. On English, French, and Japanese versions at least. Other beta-testers may use Chinese versions of this OS. They don't have reported such problem. Which version of Java is installed on your system? If you have Windows, look for this information in your control panel, by clicking on the "Java" icon. May be you've got a problem because your home directory is in a folder that has some strange characters (spaces in your home directory is OK, but may be you've got a complex user name that made Windows map your name to a very special home directory name). This may also happen if you have upgraded your OS from windows 98 to NT/2000/XP and converted the FAT32 partition to NTFS, under a distinct OS locale (FAT/FAT32 filesystems do not record the codepage they use to create legacy short names, and Windows 95/98 were known to not always track their codepage correctly, notably if your AUTOEXEC.BAT was deleted accidentaly, dropping the CHCP command needed to specify the system locale before Windows was started). Using CHKDSK may help correct the legacy short names to match with Unicode encoded long names displayed in Windows Explorer. |
I have windows ME, and I just downloaded it and everything like that, and every time I try to connect, it says "connecting" for about 3 seconds and stops. I have tried looking through the faqs and I can't find a solution. On the limewire.com website, it only gives tips for windows xp, which is extremely annoying to me at this point. Any solutions? |
works but poor connection is poor connects to one ultra peer which means i can't download a thing any ideas? i am under xpsp2 thanks |
Did you try the solutions for SP2? |
mac os x I have mac os x and i cant connect at all... Ive tried most of the tricks on here. I think it might be my college but limewire connects for a second at poor. I can search for like 20 seconds then it disconnects. I dont know what to do. my room mate can connect through bearshare. I dont know what to do |
Mine finally works! I disabled the new Windows firewall and when I looked in my McAfee file, found that for some reason, my LimeWire connection had been disabled (I didn't do it). I allowed access, deleted the .limewire preference files, made triple sure that Limewire wasn't running, downloaded the jar files into the Limewire program file and restarted. I've been trying to fix this for a few days, so I guess my only suggestion is patience and try everything. I had no reason to think McAfee would suddenly drop LimeWire from my allowed programs, but it did (and it was the only thing changed). I also made sure the Windows firewall was absolutely disabled (there are two or three areas where you have to tick a box off to disable). |
McAfee is not alone to do that. In fact, Computer Associate (that bought the "PestPatrol" anti-spyware tool) does this too in its "eTrust" tool. The culprit is PestPatrol, whose database of spyware signatures is notoriously outdated, and contains MANY false positive (including vital components of Windows XP's networking). PestPatrol has been completely left unmaintained for many months, probably because of lack of financial resources, which led to the company being sold and acquired by Computer Associates. The false positive that harms LimeWire is caused by the way they detect KazaA (which is effectively a true spyware), but that cause almost all Gnutella servents to be disabled too (this includes not only LimeWire, but BearShare, GTKG or others too): they block the program names only because they share some common ports, or a handler for the Magnet protocol (that they disable too). If you have recently updated your CA "eTrust" antivirus or security suite, and have discovered that it contained a new anti-spyware tool, you should better not enable it as it is directly based on the very bad PestPatrol signatures database (but keep its antivirus function active!), and use other more serious anti-spyware tools (Ad-Aware, Spybot Search&Destroy, SpywareBlaster), which in addition are free and supported by a large open community of users. May be in some future, eTrust will become reliable, once CA will have cleaned up the old anti-spyware database. But for now this feature is still a beta for eTrust, and it will remain at this state for at least a full year. |
It seems I spoke too soon. I had disconnected this morning and now that I'm trying to reconnect, I can't. Every single setting is the same as it was this morning and I'm still not able to connect. It sounds like a larger issue than just a firewall at this point. |
Can someone PLEASE give me instructions for Windows ME...Like a previous user has already said, the only instructions i've found have been for windows XP only....please please please, i need to know...i'm begging. It says "connecting" for like 45 seconds , but it never actually connects. Can someone please tell me of a fix for windows milenium??? pleaaaaaaaaaase |
nothing is working Ok I have OS X and I've tried to delete the directory and its still not working. Also, I don't have the "sharing" options in my internet preferences menu, all I have is .Mac, Network, and QuickTime options so nothing is working. I haven't been able to connect for about 2 weeks now.:( |
alpha28ca, it seems that your OS is either 10.1 or 10.2 (if Jaguar didn't have a firewall). Anyway, where are you trying to connect from? Keep in mind that universities and companies tend to block P2P. Go to Limewire->Preferences->Bug Report. Click for an example and get to the part where it says "Recieved incoming this session". "False" means a firewall is prolly blocking your access. "True" is the opposite. |
purger jar it didnt work i need help i have had lime wire for three weeks and havent been able to use it yet help??????? :( :( |
nantim nantim what did your bug report say? Please supply as many details of your system & problem as possible. |
tried everything Ive tried everything i can find on the forums and i still cant connect. ive connected at poor everytime ive tried one of your suggestions and im glad they worked for you all but i have a router with disabled firewall and win xp with all the 6346 tcps etc.. any idea on what to try next? |
What did your bug report say? |

Connection Problems Hi, i've been on Limewire for about a week now and have only had connection problems in the last couple of days. I haven't installed a Firewall only PAL Antivirus. I installed the jar as suggested which didn't seem to work. i kept shutting down and starting up and now i'm connected but the connection says poor quality. Pleas help, i'm quite clueless about all this stuff, don't know the jargon. |
Did you try deleting your Limewire (LW) preferences? To find them do a search on your computer for limewire. Your LW Prefs are in a folder called .limewire Delete the entire folder. (FOr mac that's a single file called .limewire. When LW is open, click Tools->Options & go to Bug report & click for an example. In the window that appears scroll down to the part that says: "Recieved incoming this session". If it says ‘True’ then LW has no problem with firewalls, but if 'False' it does have a prob. For macosx that is LW's Prefs & Bug Report, & for OS9 that's Options & Bug Report (I think.) |
help!!! at the end of my rope! :''( OSX user...can't connect worth anything! :'( Hey all...I've been reading the possible fixes for the connect probs and I have tried them all and nothing! I'm so frustrated! I'm using mac OSX version 10.3.5 I can open it and it has the lil green bar that constantly says 'connecting' occassionaly it will go up to 'poor' for like a second then back down to 'connecting' although obviously i never can do anything. I've tried deleting preferences, unchecking tips, etc. etc. and gone into system prefs making sure the port was available thruogh the firewall. I dunno...I need some serious help! If anyone knowing bout this prob. on mac osx could shed some light on this i'd greatly appreciate it!!! thanks! |
Connection Problems Hi Lord of the Rings thanks for responding. I have deleted the preferences as suggested. when i went to reopen Limewire, the wizard appeared (not Merlin unfortunately) so i followed it and now appear to be connectd. thanks so much for your help. may need to call on you again as i am dangerously inexperienced at all this stuff. later :p |
dzine, as a Mac user, I suggest you disable your firewall completely: Macs don't need them as much as PCs. Now, where are you trying to connect from? Home? Work? School/university? Launch LW and go to the preferences. Go to the Bug Reports section and click the button for an example. In the window that appears you'll find somewhere along the lines this written: "Recieved incoming this session". If it says false (if true, then you're ok, firewall-wise), then there's a firewall blocking LW, and since your OS X firewall either allows LW or is disabled, then it's because you are trying to connect from somewhere else than home and that they people who own the connection don't want P2P, so they bock it. No "legit" way around that. If that still isn't your case (I mean that you can't connect but you are using a home connection) then it's possible that it's your ISP who is responsible for blocking P2P. You can try calling them to ask them what's the deal. |
fixed thx everyone im logged onto limewire odd thing is i upgraded my router and when i did it shorted half of it out and now i can log onto all my p2p things lol. bad things is it only lets one pc connect so i have to buy a new tomorrow though i am buying one this time that has no firewall in it. lol see ya on the net. |

Mine says "False" but I feel like I've done everything I can to disable firewalls. I run Windows XP and also have Zone Alarm. Zone alarm is configured to allow connections from Limeware. Is there anything else that needs to be done? i also have Norton Anti-virus. Would this cause a problem in any way? I haven't had any problems connecting before. It seems that it jsut happened all the sudden. I checked and I do have SP2 installed. hopefully with this information you can help me. I really like this program and want to be able to use it again. Thanks! -Ginny |
See this thread: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=29377 in reference to Norton. |
Norton Anti-virus doesn't block anything (aside form virii of course) when it comes to connections. I'd like to ask where are you trying to connect from? (work, university, home...) |
