Hi,

I am using Windows XP professional 2002
Service Pack 1 40 GB hardisk 256 MB RAM.

I am trying to connect Limewire from my office.

I font have any firewall software on my system, though it must be existing on the server through which i am connecting.

I use HTTP proxy and we have user authentication password for that which is not supported by LW....is there any other option to conect? How do i get to know if i can ever be able to connect or not?

If you are going to be able to connect, you are going to have to use a proxy server.Basic Proxy server information

But, you are at work. Many places of business don't allow this type of activity, up to firing you.

space_silent June 8th, 2005 10:54 AM

I am having the same problem as LEFTSAID FRED. None of the F.S. programs will. I tried quite a few. Bearshare, Shareaza and a few more. I just cant connect. My ISP Is QWEST DSL and Modem Is ACTIONTEC #:GT701-WG With wireless router. If there are any solution a response would be apreciated.

Lord of the Rings June 8th, 2005 11:11 AM

space_silent your modem/router might not be UPnP capable. In which case you should probably manually forward a port for your device. To do so you MUST 1st set up a static ip or else it won't work. For instructions see below:

1. Set up static ip.
2. Forward port 6346 using these instructions: http://www.portforward.com/actiontec/701.htm
3. Within LW, see this: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

Also make sure your firewall is properly configured to allow LW full access: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

i don't want to sound like a moron (but i probably do), but all of this static ip, port forwarding stuff makes no sense to me. i'm relatively computer literate, but when it comes to stuff like this, i need stuff broken down step by step. anyone still willing to help? if not, just tell me how to get my money back. thanks!

tried still does not work, heeeeeelp,

Lord of the Rings July 4th, 2005 09:02 PM

eeek! lol There's lots of repeats here! But I do need to ask yet again.

Do these things:

A. Configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

(if you need to disable Win XP's Firewall in favor of another then: go to the control panel, double click on Windoze Firewall, check the disable box.)

B. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? (If you can't reach that page then your port 6346 is blocked!)

C. Please give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider?
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.

If you require Port Forwarding:

* If you have a modem/router that uses NAT but does not utilise Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) then you may need to forward (open) a port. (Check the specifications of your device to find out if it supports UPnP or not! Some only support it in USB mode & some not at all!) See http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm if you equire port forwarding to open up Port 6346 which LW uses by default. Remember the most important thing is to 1st set up a Static ip or else port forwarding won't work! Then forward a port (after choosing model from that site, & selecting port forward, choose LimeWire from the list of programs to open a port for.) Th 3rd step is this: Within LW: - Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

Lord of the Rings July 4th, 2005 09:10 PM

If you're concerned about the possibility of your ISP (Internet Service Provider) blocking or filtering your p2p sharing or just LW, then see these: ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire & also A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 & 2 which has a link to alternative instructions.

And as LeftSaidFred said, it might even be an idea to give them a call to tell them to open any ports that might be blocked or to stop secretly filtering your p2p sharing use. Often people at the front desk don't know but someone will.

Casper-420 July 5th, 2005 02:31 AM

Ok, brief synopsis.

Ok. Let me give you a brief description of my system and problem. I'm on a Compaq Presario, 5000 series, 633 celeron with 127mb (yes, 127 not 128, dont ask me why.) of RAM. Roughly 10 gigs of HD space left over. Java version 1.42, Lime Wire Version 4.07. Dialup connection 56k on a US Rpbotics external fax/modem through Juno's premium service.

That having been described, I'm at a loss here. I've got my Zone Alarm configured to allow LW to connect through it, and tested it using the test links found elsewhere in previous posts. The port seems to be working just fine and isn't blocked by my ISP. Also, I've tried using that purger located previously, it worked, I ran LW again and nothing. It comes up just fine, loads and all that and starts to connect.............and starts to connect............and continues trying to connect, but never seems to finish the connection. Hopefully you can help me out, because I've heard so many wonderfull things about the LW system. (No, not trying to butter anyone up.)

As a side note: Kazaa Lite seems to be having the same problem, dont know if that information will help you guys figure out the problem, but it seemed relevant.

eagle1 July 5th, 2005 03:14 PM

O.K. here goes, I am self taught, yes, I don't have a degree and I just am tired of trying to figure this whole connect issue, yes I am aware that I have to do as you say refrence clearing this and that but give me a break man, besides uninstalling your whole software, which has crossed my mind, all I want is to jam on some music man, thats it, simple isnt it. HELP am thinking of reading books?

shooter77 July 25th, 2005 11:48 AM

grrrrrrrrr!!!!

alright, I've tried everything I've heard in here. I've checked it on the exceptions list for my network. It's allowed on my firewall as well. I even changed the port numbers. Called my ISP, and they said to go to my proxi settings..WTF do I do once I get there? lime wire worked when I first downloaded it... then it just quits connecting and says "the gnutella netwrok is being blocked" and to check fire wall settings and call my ISP to make sure they aren't blocking it. I've don't both. Both have done nothing to help me. HELP!

Well you're free to use the free version until you're happy with it. People are recommended to use LW Basic 1st to sort out any issues they might have. Coming here simply to scream without looking for a solution is next to "trolling".

megido1, eagle1, shooter77 & Kazak, please see my previous post in this thread (a page or 2 back) & answer those questions & do those tests & provide your findings here. It's difficult to try to find a solution when nothing or little is known about your set up.

Still Can't connect

Thanks for your mail and tip. These are my result

7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? HOME & WORK

8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version -LW 4.9.23, JAVA 1.5.0.04

Lord of the Rings August 25th, 2005 05:16 AM

megido1 & younga-angel, both your problems are recent. Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire & see if this makes any improvement.

younga-angel August 25th, 2005 05:38 AM

thank you...but this wont delete any of my shared files on limewire will it...because i dont wan them to get deleted...write bak asap pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...thank you
shenila:rolleyes:

Lord of the Rings August 25th, 2005 05:51 AM

All that does in delete your LW preferences folder called .limewire but the next time you open LW, it will create a fresh .limewire folder. See the image samples at the bottom of the link-page I gave above. Very easy to do. It has nothing to do with your downlds or incomplete files. But just make a note of the settings such as where your downld folder is situated so you choose to make it the same after you open LW next time. If it is the default location then nothing to think about.

younga-angel August 25th, 2005 06:07 AM

hello...thank you but i really need a step by step guide of doing this...im ver sorry to trouble you...its just that im very new to all this because this has neva happened to me before...ive been using limewire for more than a year...thank you...pleaseee replyy asap..

Lord of the Rings August 25th, 2005 07:19 AM

Did you close LW before you deleted that folder? That's very important to do. If you didn't you'll need to redo it.

Yeah, I'm pretty new to Limewire, when i first installed it was working fine. But then i went off to college and got a different connection type and now it won't work. I'm connected to the internet, and i've opened the Gnutella ports on my firewall, i've also tried the deleting the .limewire directory and nothing is working. Please help.

Thanks.

please help!

I cannot connect. I've tried everything you have suggested. I'm in a corporate environment and may not be able to connect b/c of that. Can I look for all the firewalls on my computer somehow? The little icon at the bottom of my LimeWire shows up as having identified a firewall. what can i do? i've paid for this service and cannot connect to find one single song or movie!!! i need help!!

younga-angel August 25th, 2005 01:53 PM

hii...i experienced connection problems...i just wanted to let you know that if you an anti-virus...sometimes that has its own personal firewall...so that may be blocking it...go into your anti-virus and switch off the firewall and make sure windows firewall is turned off aswell...that way limewire will be able to connect...make sure during the process limewire is not open...i hope this works because it did for me and i am not having anymore problems...Shenila...Proud to help :D:D

Hello Lord of the rings,

I deleted the LW preference folder as stated in point 2.

Then went into my "Add / Remove" program to update the program. But unfotunately mine doesn't have to "Change or Update" button. I guess i am running on a newer version as you indicated. I am on Version 4.9.28

For step 4, i right click and went into property of from the LW Icon. I changed the Compatability setting to Win 2000.

Step 5, right clicked and selected "Run As" and received a pop up window with my name. Unfortunately, i can't execute it as an adminstrator as i don't have the password. I tried running it under my profile but got this error message below. A copy of the error has also been email to LW:

megido1 if you don't have admin rights over the computer then you shouldn't change that setting. I'd suggest changing it back to how it was.

May I recommend you try a newer version of LW; version 4.9.28 from here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

megido1 August 26th, 2005 01:08 AM

These versions of LW should be able to uninstall the previous version during the actual installation process. So no need to uninstall it.

You said you have windows firewall. Which one? And what connection devices do you use? Modem/router ... what brands & models?

So you manage to start it up ok now?

Thank for coming back to me.

I am running the Windows XP. The fire wall just says "windows firewall". This is located in the Control Panel but unfortunately I can't find a property button to know more about it.

My connection is a LAN.

Yes, i manage to start it up. It starts up but can't connect. I can see from the Connection tab in LW - the connections dropping... on average i see 9 connections being made. it just says "connecting"

Thanks

I followed the instructions for connection problems on the limewire site. I disabled every firewall or thing that may be stopping me from connecting but I still get the following error.

"Limewire was unable ti initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program blocking limewire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart limewire"

This is driving me up the wall, I have uninstalled and reinstalled, followed instructions on the site as i said, can anyone help me with this????
thanks in advance for the help.
