This might help: Fixes for Limewire As long as it's not a firewall or modem/router with a NAT firewall or you're connecting thru a company or school network which all may have different solutions. Oh & also hoping your isp is not filtering or blocking p2p use.

Knowing these things generally help with solving these issues: Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. Operating System version (eg: Win 98),
2. What firewalls you have,
3. ram, 4. HDD space available,
5. Connection type,
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers,
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?

angel76 January 18th, 2005 07:35 AM

O.K. I'm new to this so i may not get this right but i'll try
op sys: Win98
no firewalls, that i know of
ram: 160
hdd space available: 4.09 gb free (i think) I don't know if thats right
Dial up connection AOL
connecting from home
I hope thats right:)

Lord of the Rings January 18th, 2005 07:50 AM

Thank you, you did well! :)

There have been known issues with AOL users. Unfortunately I don't know or can't remember them all. But here's one: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=23895

angel76 January 20th, 2005 09:43 AM

Thanks. I was hoping i did that right. I got a pop up from aol saying that one of my main index files was damaged, so i re-ran aol and now limewire is fine. weird. I also noticed that if i click limewire icon on the taskbar it won't connect but if i click limewire on my desktop it works great. Thanks for the help i appreciate it:)

wintercs January 20th, 2005 06:02 PM

Ok so here's the deal. I'm on a school network and couldn't get limewire to work. I kept trying the purger.jar file again and again and couldn't get it working. And then, I tried it one more time and low and behold it started working!!! But then, I must have changed some setting or something and messed up the connection - now I'm back to where I started. I can't get it to connect AT ALL. I actually downloaded Morpheus and that works fine except that the downloads are much slower. Here's my get-up, please please please help me out - I've gone through all the tips and have even reinstalled my network drivers - nothing has worked!

1. Windows XP - sp2
2. XP firewall - have both gnutellas and limewire as exception
3. 256 mb of ram
4. 40 gigs of hd space free
5. Connection type - T1? - ethernet
6. Realtek 8193 Ethernet NIC, Belkin 4port router
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? School network

proevmaster January 21st, 2005 07:41 AM

Hi. Whenever I try to connect I it always just says 'connecting' in the corner. I've left it on for hours.

Any Ideas?

1. Operating System version (eg: Win 98),
Red HAT 9

2. What firewalls you have,
Unsure. How do I check?

3. ram,
512

4. HDD space available,
20 GIGS

5. Connection type,
Cable

6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers,
Unsure

7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
Work

Lord of the Rings January 21st, 2005 08:10 AM

If you're connecting from work, then you'll be connecting from a network right? Chances are the main machines are running xp for max protection. Unfortunately you won't have control over them or the connection devices. If you might have some control then please say.

Red HAT 9? I thought that had something to do with Linux? But I know nothing about ... lol

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say ‘Test Page was a Success’. What happens when you go there?

You can try some of these fixes but using win 98 they won't all be applicable: Fixes for Limewire Leave LW on for some time to give it a chance to connect.

proevmaster January 24th, 2005 04:37 AM

Hi.

The page : http://www3.limewire.com:6346/
gave me :
Your test page was a success!

I updated my java version, used this :
http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...ads/purger.jar
to delete my preferences and left the Limewire alone all weekend to see if it would connect and it didn't.

Any other ideas? Is there any one else I could ask?

Ran JAR now cant see Sahred and Incomplete files

I ran the JAR file as recomended and it deleted my Limewire settings. LW then prompted for new settings but now cant see any Shared or Incomplete files even though they are in the Limewire directory. Tried reinstalling but still have problem. Please advise on how to recover.

Lord of the Rings January 26th, 2005 01:04 AM

Deleting your LW Preferences will mean that you'll need to reset your option settings. It's usually a good idea to make a note of your settings before you do this. If you know where your downld folder is, then just re-direct LW to use that folder again as before. ie: Tools>Options>Saving If you originally chose default then it should be the same.

Connection is Futile

I have followed every step & suggestion I can find to get a connection. It worked the first time I downloaded the program, now it will not connect. I spoken with my ISP, put in all the proper advanced codes for internet connections, deleted my limewire directory, deleted limewire totally, downloaded for a second time, then a third time when I stumbled on a newer version and have come to the point where I think I should try someother place. Any assistance would be appreciated, as I have better ways to spend 6 hours of my time on my one day off.

Lord of the Rings February 10th, 2005 05:11 PM

Did you try the fixes here: Fixes for Limewire These may or may not fix your problems.
Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version?
2. What firewalls you have?
3. ram? 4. HDD space available?
5. Connection type?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.

This is my first time in this type of forum. I bearly understand what they mean by threads and I don't know if I'm even doing this reply right. I really appreciate your patience.
1. W/dows 2000 XP pro with Explorer 6.0.2
2. W/dows firewall & I believe there is one with the wirless router
3. 64 MB
4. 45.3 GB
5. Cable
6. Modem is a Terayon but there is no model # on it
Wireless router by Netgear, model # CE0560
7. Connecting from home
I disconnected & disabled my wireless set up and tried limewire then but it wouldn't work. I shut down every firewall I could find. I corrected the problem with W/dows security patch 2. I uninstalled Limewire twice and reloaded again but still nothing happens. It worked the first time I tried it and nothing since then. If I leave it running on start up the message error comes up and then everything freezes and I have to force a shut down.

Lord of the Rings February 11th, 2005 08:10 AM

I think the reason it's freezing up is the amount of ram you have. The bottom of this page http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...loadfree.shtml does say 64 MB as the minimum but you really are pushing it since it doesn't leave much over for your operating system or anything else (particularly using win XP.) Java is not very RAM friendly unfortunately.

Instead of going without a firewall. It's best to configure it/them to allow LW access. See instructions here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

As far as your router goes, many wireless routers do have internal firewalls. If yours does it might be an idea to open a port (6346) for LW. But I think the number you gave me is a serial number & not the model number. I went to the Netgear support site & the no. you gave me is not a model number they have listed of present or past models. See Netgear Support page The model number might be somewhere else on the unit or manual that came with it.

May I ask who your ISP provider is? I just want to make sure it's not one of the infamous ones that block p2p file sharing use.

You've done all the right things & posted all necessary details so I'm impressed.
1. Configure your firewalls,
2. make sure your Java is up to date: version 1.4.x OR version 1.5 (take the JRE) (sometimes one version works better on some people's systems than the other version.)
3. Make a note of all your LW settings & then delete the LW Preferences folder. See my link in the earlier post called Fixes for Limewire. That will explain how to delete your LW Preferences folder.
4. Don't have LW set to start on System startup. Tools>Options>Advanced>System startup & make sure this is disabled. It might also be a good idea to manually connect. Tools>Options>Connections & untick this option & press apply.
5. After opening LW, wait a few mins before trying to connect. Then go to LW's menu File>Connect. Now give it over half an hour to connect.

Saving memory on your system

Regarding the memory requirements, I think that 64MB is too small for Windows XP, given that Microsoft already recommends 128MB min to run Wndows XP. OK, XP is now faster with Service Pack 2 which reduces a lo the memory footprint of the Windows Kernel, but this is already a huge gap.

We should probably indicate 128MB min on Windows XP, 256MB is anyway very recommended to run Windows XP, even without Limewire...).

What users should do:
before running Limewire, try optimizing your system, without any running application, so that the commited memory will remain low. On windows XP, you can see the amount of committed memory in the System Monitor (an optional component not installed by default). Look also with the Task Monitor (CTRL+ALT+DEL) which process is taking much of memory or resources.

Beware of spywares/spamwares that often take huge amount of memory, notably if your system is running for long (as they are often badly programmed and constantly leak memory).

Use also some tool to check the programs that run in autostart. Many programs should not run automatically just at startup. For example, you don't need to let the Java Update process run in autostart. But one of the most frequent program that take LOTS of memory, and causes slow boot of Windows is the RealNetworks update and notification monitor. If you have Real Player installed, you can just remove the automatic notifications.
You probably also don't need to run at each boot the OSA.EXE (an "optimizer" for Microsoft Office, that loads lots of DLL and take too much time to boot).

If you're short on memory (with less than 256MB on Windows XP), try disabling the Services that you don't need (for example the Microsoft Personal web server, if you don't need to host web pages on your PC; it is not needed to run FrontPage, if you just edit HTML pages that you will test on a remote webserver).

If you don't have a LAN network (and no network printer with a Ethernet adapter that can be used in the Network neighborhood), you probably also don't need to load the Microsoft Windows Networking components (open the Network properties panel, and remove the support for shared files and printers on Windows network, as well as the Client for Microsoft Windows networks); also you may disable the support for NetBIOS in TCP/IP settings...

Disable also the Microsoft Indexing Service (this just takes huge space on your drive to create, very inefficiently, an index of the files you have on your disks, so that the Start>Search wizard will run "faster".) The indexing service also installs its own web server on your PC, and slows any file creation or modification you do.

You may also remove many notification icons installed by default with some display adapters, or sound cards (to control advanced sound effects): use the Display control panel or the Sound/Mixer instead when you really need to change something in those adapters...

In most cases, LimeWire is slow only because the native system is already slow and unnecessarily filled by tools and services you don't use or need.

Note: in the Services Administration panel, don't disable too many services, note the changes you make there so that you can restore them later if another service can't work without it.

There are some great tools on Windows to tweak your system for speed.

But avoid using the network speed optimizers. They are often not very effective and in fact may break the compatility of your network installation with some Internet services, or with some ISPs (for example, disabling PMTU discovery, or BlackHole discovery may result in dramatically slower accesses to some websites).

Note that some Windows tweaker tools will force you to disable UPnP support. This is a bad idea if you're firewalled or use an external NAT router: without it, you'll need to manually configure LimeWire so that it will accept incoming connections through your firewall, and such manual configuration, left permanent, is also a security issue as it will allow worms possibly running on your PC to work as open-relays that will steal your bandwidth... Using UPnP is *now* (with security updates) often safer than using manual configuration without lots of precautions, notably if you have an external router or external firewall that will protect your local (or builtin in Windows XP SP2) UPnP-enabled firewall.

fixes to connect

Okay, I'm confused. Where do I find the settings for LW so I can write them down before I delete them? What about the compatability tab in the properties section of LW, can it be creating a problem for me? I was also wondering, why, when I go into Tools>Options the window is hardly large enough to see the Cancel, Okay, Apply, buttons and I can't resize the window. Is this an indication of deeper problems?
Thanks

Lord of the Rings February 15th, 2005 09:38 AM

Hi mskate. May I suggest your forward a port on your Netgear router to allow LW access. You will 1st need to set up a Static IP for this work. (By the way your model is MR814, not RM814. Netgear don't have any such model.) I have 2 sets of instructions. 1. Static IP & Port Forward for MR 814 & 2. Forwarding a port on MR814 And use Port 6346 or you could do the range 6346 to 6348.

Once you have succeeded doing this, try to connect to LW. Give it some time. If you're still having problem, go to LW's Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & select UPnP & press Apply button. Try again.

If it still fails. Within LW, go to Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & select Manual Port Forward. See Force IP instructions & sample image & following post.

* Make sure you have configured all your firewalls to allow LW's access (including XP Firewall): http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Lord of the Rings February 15th, 2005 09:42 AM

Yes your LW settings are those in Tools>Options. If you didn't change any then they'll be set to default.

I've heard of that happening before with the window. See if your can drag it down/sideways. You may need to drag the whole interface of LW from the bottom corner to enlargen the main interface. If that doesn't solve it, then I'll see if I can locate an answer from a previous post.

instructions for static ip addres

Hi there,
In reading the instructions, it says to pick an ip address and remember it, is this a number I just get out of my head, or is it going to show up somewhere in one of the windows? I'm not sure about this step.
thanks
mskate

et voilŕ February 15th, 2005 03:16 PM

Salut mskate, the staic IP is an arbritrary IP you give to your computer, that IP being one in the range supported for your router. For Netgear you should choose anyone in the 192.168.0.2 -192.168.0.9 range. For exemple if you set your computer as 192.168.0.2, this is the IP you enter in the Server IP Address filed in the router config.

Bonne chance

bobhughes February 26th, 2005 06:59 AM

That May be the case

But, the only link I can find is to an older version... the "force IP" seems MIA in version 4.6.... if you know where a thread that is pertainant to 4.6, could you post the link here please?...I found the original post, but the only image in it, is for an old version of LimeWire... If you know what version it is, I'd use it instead of the newest... just want to get em connected. In one of your posts you mention that the force IP "has" been removed...

connection problems

I am new to computers & new to Limewire. How come my boxes in left hand bottom corner are staying red & say connecting. If I try to search the message says Limewire is still connecting & your search may result in fewer results.

Lord of the Rings February 27th, 2005 04:41 PM

After opening LW it's best to leave it for a time before doing anything. Give it a chance to settle. Then search. It should have green or blue bars in the connection quality not red.

I give up, for a couple of days it worked fine but now when I open it up it connects only about 1 out of 20 tries. maybe i'll try it agin in a few months when a new version comes out...

Donica March 9th, 2005 08:56 AM

*sigh*

Been messing around with this for weeks now. Tried everything.

I am running Win2000

I am a SouthWest Bell DSL customer with a 2wire router

There are two other computers that successfully run Limewire in my apartment. One is a PC that is wired, the other is a laptop that is wireless. They are both WinXP.

The computer I am having problems with is a laptop and is connected wirelessly.

I'm running Norton, and have allowed Limewire and javaw.exe to access the internet.

I have set my 2wire firewall to allow Gnutella on port 6346. At first when I tried to do this, it wouldn't allow it because the port was already being used. I still don't know what was using it (I downloaded a program to tell me what programs are using what port, and I didn't see a conflict), but the next day when I tried to force my 2wire firewall to allow Gnutella, it accepted it.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled, I have shut down Limewire and deleted the .limewire folder and restarted, I have unchecked the "Connect at Startup" and restarted, I have changed the port to 7000 and restarted.

At one point I was using ZoneAlarm. I deleted it before I installed Norton. To be certain that there weren't any residual blocks from ZA, I re-installed it, manually went in and allowed all access for Limewire and javaw.exe. When this didn't work, I uninstalled ZA again.

I have used AdAware, I know that in the past I've seen problems from AdAware on other computers (causes Outlook to stop connecting). I'm not sure if it is causing the same for LimeWire, and I wouldn't know how to correct it if it were.

I hope this is enough information for someone to be able to help, I really don't want to have to clean up all te spyware from other file sharing programs. But I will if I can't get this to work.

Thanks!

Charlos March 9th, 2005 08:02 PM

NEW SOLUTION......!!!!!!!!!

Guys, ive had all the problems anyone had.

Tryied Setting GNUTELLA, deleting .limewire, even restarted, downloaded that weird file that couldnt open, etc etc.

IF nothing worked, u may missed one little part:

before u download LM installer, it says on the faq, to download JAVA, a little program for optimization. well...my old LM version always worked without it, but 4.8 looks like it needs it.
install it, restart, and if it didnt worked, dude...commit suicide, cause ive been trying to run this for ever, and I was about to curse everyone that works for LM...but hey, 18 bucks is finally something.

By the way, I have pro but even the non pro worked.

WIn XP, 3.0ghz, 1 gb ram

Good luck yall...

Bt_Mazter March 25th, 2005 01:06 PM

Donica,

With 3 pc's on the same router you will need to setup, STATIC ip's, individual ports in eah LW client, and forward the same ports to each PC's ip.

I'm still trying to "tweak" this app into shape myself.

First, I would try setting up all the clients on the lan with manual (STATiC) ip's, share a folder on each of them and see that you can access the shared folder thru the lan.

Then, you need to setup individual port "sets" on each one as well and FORWARD the "sets" per station from the router. This is in theory how it "should" work but this new age of P2P is quite a mix of clues instead of directions :D

Try this, under the firewall config of LW:

:Client one:
Listen: 6346
Manual port forward: 6346

:Client two:
Listen: 25201
Manual port forward: 25201

:Client three:
Listen: 25301
Manual port forward: 25301

For each station you set the port set the same FORWARDING port in the router to that stations IP. There seems to be some confusion on ports but in theory this should work. They are suppose to be TCP but you could try setting your router/firewalls to allow both both TCP/UDP.

Technically speaking that is all the more you should have to do! In theory, when client 3 sends out a request for something the server/client responding will send back info to port 25301 TCP on your router and then your router will FORWARD that info to the IP set for Client 3 :)

In theory :)

Also, try disabling both Ipsecurity (IPSEC) and Block Wan Request. Consult your manual or www.portforward.com/routers.htm

<--NOTE--> Your router may differ from the one listed at the site. Also, check for router flashware/hardware/software upgrades!

=---> 25010-25792 optional safe ports to use! <---=

PLEASE POST BACK! GL!

PLEASE help!

i have gone through page after page on this forum and *nothing* that i've tried has worked.

i'm on a mac g4, os-x. i went through the firewall instructions on the limewire site but it didn't seem to do anything.

when i click http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ i get an error message ("Safari can’t open the page “http://www3.limewire.com:6346/” because it could not connect to the server “www3.limewire.com”.)

when i do the bug report example it says "Received incoming this session: false"

i have one green bar and the quality says Connecting. my connection status says Leaf (i have no idea what that means). i have NO connections.

PLEASE help, i am completely lost!

jaeru which OSX version you running? Go to OSX section of forum to see solutions to Java issues related to OS 10.3.9 updates.

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. What firewalls you have?
2. ram?
3. Hard Disk space available?
4. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
5. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
6. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
7. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
8. Are you networked or sharing a router?
9. Who is your isp provider?
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.

I have added Limewire to the firewall exceptions, I have deleted the personal folder and restarted, I have done everything suggested by everyone here. Yet when I start up livewire it stays at Quality: Connecting and does absolutely nothing!!!
I have even gone in under options and put it to manual port (tried several different port #'s) but still nothing, nada, zilch. I am currently on Windows Xp and we have a T1 line here at work. Any suggestions?

After buying a new PC today I could not get my limewire Pro to work for love nor money, however I believe I have found the necesserey solution:

*******************************

Normally new PC's come with Java on them, but an outdated one. Go to the Sun Java website and download JRE v1.5.0. It MUST be the JRE otherwise it will not connect. Use this link and follow the instructions:

https://sdlcweb4b.sun.com/ECom/EComA...1673A5E51CB6B4

This answered all my prayers, and I am glad I could share it with you guys!!

Ok, the link doesn't work!! Try this instead:

Can't connect

I have just installed Limewire Basic 4.8.1

I can't connect at all. I have tried deleting Preference folder, disabling firewalls.

Going here http://www3.limewire.com:6346/
gives me 504 Gateway Timeout

My specs
1. Win XP SP1
2. Zonealarm (disabling it makes no difference)
3. 768MB RAM, 60GB HDD free
5. T1/LAN
6. Using a Realtek RTL8139, with SMC7004ABR Router
7. Home

My browser uses "Automatic Configruation Script"
I tried typing that proxy into Limewire (HTTP) and when I try to connect, it gives
"Your machine does not appear to have an active Internet connection or a firewall is blocking etc..."

If I don't use the proxy, the same error comes out, except that it will remain in "Connecting" mode for about 30seconds then give that error instead of giving the error immediately.

Can hanyone help me please? :(

Who is your ISP?

Cox is infamous for blocking, if they are your providor, then using a proxy server is your only option.

Seach the web to see how to do this.

My folks, have Cox, and I never could get theirs to work.

Lime Wire usually just works, unless your ISP is blocking it..

This is strange!

I see that many people cant connect to limewire, now you can put me in that list. I have dowloaded files from limewire before but suddenly, 2 days ago, i couldnt connect to gnutella.

I have northon internet security, and belive me, the northon firewall is off ( it has always been off, so why should it suddenly turn itself on, anyway, i had dobbel checked that it is OFF)

I use Windows Xp pro, and the built in firewall is also off, i have never used it, and i have dobbel checked that also is off.

Here is the strange part, i cant even connect with Bittorrent (!), i use bittorrent 4.0.2 (i know bittorrent isnt the subject here, but would like to hear how many people that cant connect to limewire that also cant connect to bittorrent). Tryed bearshare too.. that doesnt work either ( i know its also gnutella but worth a try). All other internet activity works fine, my IE dowloads web sites well, and i can also download files with IE, i can also play games online.

Its so strange that Bittorrent and limewire should all of the sudden stop connecting. I have read many post on this threads, and tryed every solution . Remove /.limewire directory, turned off connect-at-start-up and amnually connected, re-installed limewire.

I know this maybe sounds like a ISP block, my ISP is Telenor (norway), but i know people that use telenor as ISP and they can connect to gnutella and downlaod torrent files.

I have also used Ad-aware and Spybot S&D to clean my system

Please come with more tips to solve this problem.

I see myself with moderate computer skill.
