Firewall or loopback connections blocking limewire?

I have used limewire many times in the past, and have never had a problem. However, I recently reinstalled windows xp, and it wont open. When I click the icon on the dektop, it states " Limewire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program blocking LimeWire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart LimeWire"

I have reinstalled it numerous times, configued my firewall to allow LimeWire, and it still won't work.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

what firewall do you have i can maybe help you

marc449 November 26th, 2006 03:48 PM

If your using Windows Firewall try disabling it all together just while using LW, that works sometimes, I don't know about other firewalls.

Lord of the Rings November 26th, 2006 03:53 PM

You shouldn't have no software firewall. It should be turned on but properly configured to allow LW full access; (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

The Loopback scenario is generally related to a router/modem that has a NAT firewall. The answer is to enable UPnP if it supports it, or else forward a port; Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)

Make sure that your XP firewall is off & that your McAffee is configured properly
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...27&postcount=5

You might want to update your Java, your version's pretty old;) Use the offline installer for JRE below & remove your old Java version before you install the new one.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You mentioned AT&T...if you're using AT&T, they might be part of the problem (even though you're on dial-up & your port test worked). Check out the post below
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...11&postcount=4

When you first got LW & could download...was the firewall icon there?
Do you see any green connection bars? Can you search & bring up any results?

jennbagley December 13th, 2006 07:13 AM

So you think I should just wait a while until it comes back on? What is so weird was on all day sunday, the brick wall was in front of the globe, but around 7 that evening the brick wall wasn't there anymore! and I was able to download songs again. Then monday morning, it was there again. It's driving me crazy:yikes:

birdy December 13th, 2006 04:27 PM

I thought there might've been a typo in your post & that you were connecting through AT&T:o
If that's your computer's internal modem, it's a different story.
Did you check the setup of your McAfee firewall?
Who do you pay for your internet use?
Did you update your Java?

jennbagley December 14th, 2006 08:27 AM

I have disabled my mcafee firewall, and it still has the brick wall in front of the globe. How do I update my java?

Lord of the Rings December 14th, 2006 08:41 AM

Go here & choose the "Offline" installer: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp Then just follow directions with the installer. It might also be a good idea to remove your previous Java versions before-hand. To do that, go to Control panels, open Add/Remove Programs control panel & look for Java or JRE/JSE & remove. You should reboot then install the new version. ;)

MzLiciaBaby December 14th, 2006 03:36 PM

I cant even open up Lime Wire to check and see if the icon is turned on or off. The model number to my motorola is sb5101. I also did put Lime Wire in for exceptions. And I tried turning off all other exceptions like the troubleshooter said but thats not working either.

jennbagley December 15th, 2006 07:55 AM

Ok, I removed the old java version and I update like you said, and now I got java 5.0-.09, and then when I go to open Lime Wire, the brick wall is still there. I call my computer company to take off the firewall. We uninstalled the mcafee firewall and then turned off Windows firewall, so now both of them are off. But the brick wall is still there in front of the globe. I'm starting to believe that LimeWire is causing this problem. My husband is getting pretty upset, since it's been like this for a week. I dont' know what else to do.

MzLiciaBaby December 16th, 2006 05:25 AM

I still cant connect to Limewire. And Im really not loving the idea of Morpheus. Can someone please help me get back to limewire? I feel lost without it. Oh. Also, now that I have uninstalled it, I get a pop up thing that says a file was corrupted in the download. So I tried the other download for windows but it says the same thing. I keep closing it out but it keeps popping back up. What's up with that?!

Lord of the Rings December 16th, 2006 05:48 AM

You could try Phex to see if you have the same problems.

MzLiciaBaby how did you uninstall LW? I hope you didn't use the add/remove control panel. That's not the way to uninstall LW. The method is to use the Start menu > Programs > LW > Uninstall

Perhaps you should use Crap Cleaner to clean up your registry.

Need help, having same problem

I'm having the same problem as some of the other folks. Limewire can't connect because it's blocked by a firewall. My firewall is currently turned off. Here's my information:

1. OS version? Mac OSX 10.4.8
2. What firewalls you have? Mac
3. How much ram? 768mb
4. Hard Disk space available? Around 7 or 8 gigs
5. Connection type? Wireless broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem: Navini, 2.5-2.6 LMXE. Router: Linksys, WRT54G
7. Where are you trying to connect from? My apartment
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? Limewire 4.12.6, Java 1.5.0_06
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? i29 Wireless
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? The page would not load (timed out). I've tried other ports as well, with the same results.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I've used Limewire for years, this is a new problem.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes.

Lord of the Rings December 18th, 2006 12:11 AM

Is your OSX firewall enabled or disabled? I only occasionally run mine. If it's enabled then make sure it's been set up to allow LW full access; see OSX Firewall settings for Tiger

I see you have the infamous Linksys WRT54G. Don't get me wrong, Linksys make very good devices, but the models with 54 & especially the WRT54G are almost lemons; this model has a firmware problem. It doesn't run reliably in UPnP mode & is best port forwarded. The other option is to use a crack to fix the firmware. See Linksys WRT54G - Fixed my problem, Followed these steps and it works! for a solution! But you do it at your own risk.

For port forwarding the WRT54G, there's 3 steps: 1. 1st you need to set up a static ip. 2. Then forward a port. 3. Then set LW settings for port forward mode.

1. Static ip for OSX, see these links to get an idea: BTW Domain box can be left empty, it's not important. If used should relate to your local ISP. Sample (i): Static ip for OSX (1), ____ (ii) Static ip for OSX (2), ____ (iii) Setting up static ip (linksys),
(iv) See step 3 in this link about setting up static ip on OSX - Linksys support.

2. Port forwarding step: Some Linksys port forwarding instructions. Those are examples. You only need to forward port 6346 for both UDP & TCP.

3. Within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image

Lord of the Rings December 18th, 2006 12:23 AM

BTW let us know how it goes. It's a major concern you can't reach the test page http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ but with any luck the port forwarding will fix that. If not, then let us know after re-checking the test page. The problem in that scenario would most likely be your ISP blocking ports that p2p sharing programs normally use. Might need to port forward a higher port.

My LimeWire is working again!! No more problems...thank you guys for all you help! You are the best

MzLiciaBaby December 18th, 2006 12:10 PM

I recently upgraded to v4.12.xx and could not access Limewire through my firewall (McAfee).

I removed all Limewire programs from my firewall. Then I added them back. And I was able to get to Limewire again. My settings Limewire.exe -Allowed and Stubinstaller -Outbound only.

Hope this helps!:yahoo: :xirokrotima:

Rommeldog May 16th, 2007 02:58 PM

Yea that is what i thought , It is quit obvious as the amount and same type of issues in this forum that limewire is not working very well for many people and if there is not a fix out there to get users back , another program will soon be developed to replace what use to be a very popular program.

birdy May 18th, 2007 02:27 AM

Hmmm, you don't give much info so let's have a guess.

If Pro's been working in the past but it's suddenly stopped opening...have you updated Java recently? If you've updated to Java 1.6.0_01 then try reinstalling this version.
Java SE Downloads - Previous Release - JDK 5
Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java version before you install this one.

Also try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here (also point 2 if you've used much older versions of LW in the past).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things.

If that doesn't help, try changing compatibility (point 5 in the 'fixes' thread) or reinstall Pro. Have you added/upgraded/updated any security programs lately?

If you're still stuck, please give us some details.

reinstalling LM

When u uninstall limewire make sure the limewire.exe isn't running in the processes under taskmanager anymore.
Otherwise it won't uninstall the .jar files in ur limewire folder.
In taskmanager/processes click on the limewire.exe and end process, then check ur limewire folder and delete everything that is in there manually.
Now reinstall ur limewire.
Another option is to get ur hands on the StubInstaller.exe, ececute the stubinstaller, let it dl the files and install, after install start lm and check the connection it should be running smoothly.
when u uninstall the limewire again, (make sure lm folder is empty) and reinstall ur own limewire it should be back to normal.
