LW purports to have the fastest speeds but this seems awfully slow. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks for all of the information. Most people leave it out.
LimeWire displays the transfer speeds in KiloBytes data communications is rated in terms of kilobits.
Therefore, 56Kbit modem = max 7Kbyte
1Byte = 8 Bits
2KB = 16Kbps
4KB = 32Kbps this is more than 50% of your bandwidth.
Don't forget over head and actual connection speed which might be 45Kbps.
So, to make a long story short. Yes
