Could Not Move To Library?

To fix this problem, please download LimeWire from this link.

If you purchased PRO, you can download a LimeWire PRO with the fix by going to your personal PRO page and downloading the latest beta.

If that version of LimeWire doesn't work, please let us know by answering the questions below

------

What version is your 'kernel32.dll' file? To find this out, follow these steps:
- Double-click on 'My Computer'
- Double-click on 'Local Disk (C:)'
- Double-click on the 'Windows' folder
- Double-click on the 'system32' folder
- Right-click on the file 'kernel32.dll' and choose 'Properties'
- Click the 'Version' tab on the top.
- Click on the item "File Version" in the box on the bottom left.
- The full version should be listed in the box on the right.
*** What is that version listed?

Questions:

a) What operating system are you using?
b) What LimeWire version are you using?

c) Did downloading ever work before?
d) What day did downloading stop working?
e) Did you install any programs or updates (Windows Updates in particular) just before downloads stopped working?

f) How long is the path to your incomplete/save directory?
g) If you shorten the path (C:\Files\Saved) does it start working?
h) What drive is the save directory on?
i) Is the save directory on an internal or external drive?
j) Do you have many files that you are downloading?

k) Does the problem appear when you click on a search result to start downloading, or only after you've restarted LimeWire and it resumes old downloads?
l) Does the problem appear with every single download, or only some of them?
m) If it appears with only some of them, what do those downloads have in common? Are the names really long?
n) If it appears with all of them, try downloading some files that have very short names. Does it still fail?

o) Do you have any Anti Virus or Firewall programs running?
p) If so, can you disable them and try running LimeWire again?

a) I am currently using Windows XP Professional, with SP2. It should be noted that I have had SP2 for well over three months now, and I've never had an issue with LimeWire until recently.
b) Limewire version is Limewire Pro 4.2.3

Downloading has always worked for me until Wednesday, January 19th, when I recieved the error message and the infamous "Could not Move to Library." What I have not done is installed or updated anything on my computer in the recent few weeks.

My path is extremely short (D:/Music Files), as I save my files to an empty storage partition on my Primary(Master) Hard Drive. And likewise, the Incomplete folder is also on the storage disk (D:/Incomplete). I have not attempted to shorten the path, because it's about as short as it gets as is. As you might imagine, the Hard Drive is internal.

My downloading is mostly restricted to music files (as my distrust of anything .exe or.zip related has grown in the recent months). Downloading, for the past two months or so, has been limited to about ten songs every two weeks, with the occassional .rar file thrown in.

The problem occurs both when I start a fresh download from my search results and when attempting to "resume" a file after I have restarted the program. For that matter, it happens with every download I attempt. In fact, before I came to the Gnutella forums, I did try to download a file with a short file name but to no avail.

As far as Anti-virus software goes, I am currently using Ad-Aware SE Professional, Webroot's Spysweeper, Norton Antivirus 2005 Professional, and Spybot Search and Destroy. As of writing this post, all of it was disabled in order to attempt a download. I still receive the message.

Thanks for working on ths problem, it has become positively infuriating to say the least.

Edit: I felt it also worth mentioning that my Java was updated yesterday to 1.5...but only after I had begun to have the problems.

I have uninstalled and removed EVERYTHING about LimeWire from my computer 3 times and re-installed like 3 versions of LimeWire onto my computer and the first time I start it up every time I install it it comes up with an internal error and asks me if I want to send a report. I have sent the report every time however after that nothing downloads.

Hi Folks,

We're still not certain why this problem suddenly started appearing, but we believe we might have found a workaround.

Please download LimeWire from this link and see if downloading starts working. Let us know whether or not this version of LimeWire (4.3.3) works for you.

Also please check to see if other things are working properly, like completing a full download, resuming an incomplete download from the library, sharing files, etc...

Thanks for your patience.

Salcas January 21st, 2005 11:34 AM

WOOOOOOO IT WORKSSSSS YESSSSSSSSSSSS THAN YOUUUU SOOOOOOO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHH YOUR THE BESTTTT YESSSSSS IVE LEARNED SOMETHING....NEVER EVER GIVE UP ON LIMEWIRE WOOOOO

jiggajay1029 January 21st, 2005 11:36 AM

everything works , just one question

okay i got the new version you posted and everything worked, will you be fixing the limewire pro version soon because thats what i had befor this happened. Thank you for all your hard work.

Lord of the Rings January 21st, 2005 11:36 AM

But Sam do you really recommend Resuming from the library? It has a poor record of success!

sberlin January 21st, 2005 11:43 AM

You can download the Pro version of this from your personal pro page, after clicking on the beta link at the bottom. We're likely going to release this version into production sometime on Monday.

Thank you to everyone who helped us track down and solve this bug.

:)

ps: (Resuming work just fine, so long as you do another search.)

Salcas January 21st, 2005 11:44 AM

it seems like my downloads are going faster too lol

neworlenes January 21st, 2005 12:04 PM

It Works

YEAH!!!!

Its working now! THanks for the greatness.

susannahhill January 21st, 2005 12:44 PM

new link

sberlin,

that's great but it won't let me download that program from that link because it says that it is a corrupted program.

thanks, S

sberlin January 21st, 2005 12:50 PM

Hi Susanna,

Try going to the LimeWire Beta Page and retrieving LimeWire from there.

Lots of people have succesfully been able to download and run the program, so I'm not sure why you're seeing a corrupted program.

What, exactly, are you seeing that says it's corrupted?

Thanks.

CliffCawthorne January 21st, 2005 12:56 PM

This new version seems to be working for my first tried download. Thanks.

susannahhill January 21st, 2005 02:16 PM

failure notice

"the file is corrupted or incomplete. this could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus. you may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy. It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC comman the line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED)"

sberlin January 21st, 2005 02:41 PM

Thanks for posting the copy of the error message, Susanna. We aren't quite sure why you're seeing that message. Did you try downloading the file again? Also try getting the one from the main download link (not the beta) -- we're putting this version in production for the weekend.

Others seem to have no problem running it, so it doesn't appear to be a problem with the file itself.

What version of Windows are you using, and do you have any AntiVirus programs active?

I'd recommend clearing that cache in your web browser, deleting whatever installer you may have downloaded, and attempting to download it again.

If all else fails, right-click on the downloaded file and choose 'Create Shortcut'. Then, right-click on the shortcut and choose 'Properties'. In that box, click the 'Shortcut' tab click on the box to right of 'Target', move to the end of it, and type "/NCRC" (without the quotes). Then double-click on the shortcut and the installer should run. Hopefully you won't need to go through all this, though.

Let us know how it goes.

heltrskelter January 21st, 2005 03:11 PM

The download worked! Thank you!

susannahhill January 21st, 2005 04:34 PM

SBERLIN,

you are the funk-doctor! I installed version 4.3.3 and I am downloading again, thanks for helping me.

ps-why do I still have that cache in my browser after anti-viral/anti-spy scans? Do I have to purchase another spyware doctor to get rid of it? Just wondering.

Thanks Again,

Susannah :D

susannahhill January 21st, 2005 04:37 PM

maybe i was having different problems from others because I was using the international version...

dafdfadf January 22nd, 2005 04:07 AM

I downloaded it from that page but it ends up being 4.3.2 and not 4.3.3!!!

susannahhill January 22nd, 2005 05:26 AM

i went to www.limewire.com-
basic version, not beta, then windows-english version. also i had downloaded a new Java program too.

gab38 January 22nd, 2005 08:33 AM

Now Working Normally!

Limewire stopped working about a week ago, with the not moving file to library problem. Upgraded to Pro yesterday and still had the same problem. Just followed your link, and now everything works fine. I have Windows XP Pro and Trend Micro firewall and antivirus.

heyimalexis January 22nd, 2005 04:48 PM

This thread does not help me at ALL. I have the limewire pro so downloading the other version would just be awful. Does this mean that I have to buy another copy to fix this!? I have Limewire 4.2.5 Pro with Windows XP my computer is fine.. what the heck, it was working yesterday and now it happens out of no where. Can someone actually help??

Uscghull January 22nd, 2005 04:58 PM

Same thing, I just purchased PRO but the site you are asking us to download is not PRO. And when you try to download a song or item in PRO it still gives you the "Cannot Move to Library".
If I am understanding this correctly this will be fixed on Monday??

gab38 January 22nd, 2005 04:59 PM

Go to the first post in this thread (by Sberlin) and follow that link. My version of LW shows 4.3.3

heyimalexis January 22nd, 2005 05:30 PM

thanks but that makes no sense, nor does it help

ROBERT J MCKINNON January 22nd, 2005 08:34 PM

CAN NOT MOVE TO LIBRARY

I screwed up and changed the folder name where my music was going and the program didnt realize it, so it changed it back and it started working again.....good luck.

sberlin January 22nd, 2005 10:44 PM

If you purchased PRO, you download the newest beta from your personalized PRO page. The latest beta contains the fix. I will update my initial post to have this info.

heyimalexis January 24th, 2005 09:46 PM

okay noooow i downloaded the new version from my pro page... and it worked for a day.. and now my Limewire 4.2.6 Pro is doing the same thing...

sberlin January 24th, 2005 10:46 PM

LimeWire 4.2 has the problem. You need to download the beta, from the link at the bottom of the page that says "beta".

lancerman2010 January 29th, 2005 11:49 AM

how do u uninstall limewire

Lord of the Rings January 29th, 2005 12:41 PM

lancerman2010: Use the Add/Remove Programs Control panel.

Or see this for ideas: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=32552

ZoSo10866 January 30th, 2005 02:44 PM

Unable to move to library

You're directory has probably hit it's limit as far as the number of individual files in it's root. Try creating a new directory under your current one and share it. I had the same problem just a few weeks ago and this corrected it.

My shared directory had 364 files at a combined sz of 1.47GB.

GooRoo February 3rd, 2005 12:17 PM

Lost file (442MB!)

I have LimeWire 4.2.6, and was viewing a 98% complete file (that had been that way for days!). Apparently, the source finally came back on-line, and the download completed while I was viewing it. When I closed the player, there was this message about being unable to move to library; the file no longer exists! The file was deleted from "Incomplete" even though it was not copied to the shared folder. I am NOT a happy camper!

This bug really needs to be fixed. If the file had simply been left in the "Incomplete" folder, I could have taken care of moving it, myslef. I also would have been able to copy it to a CD. As it is, I have nothing to show for several days efforts at downloading the file.

A related matter is that there should be some sort of priority set for high file size and high percentage of completion, so that this situation of waiting days for the last 2% of a 442MB file does not reoccur.

GooRoo February 3rd, 2005 06:59 PM

Unbelievable ... it happened again!

I chose to view a video that has been sitting at 98% complete for a week with no activity and (sure enough!) while I was viewing it, the download completed. That is two 420MB+ files that have been irretrievably lost by the LimeWire software. This certainly must qualify as a bug with a high priority on the 'fix it' schedule! I can understand not being able to move the file from 'incomplete' to the fully sharable library. But why delete it from 'Incomplete' before the move process is successful?

sberlin February 3rd, 2005 09:28 PM

Have you tried following the directions in the first post that explain how to download a newer version of LimeWire?

I have 4.2.6, and everything that I have seen indicates that is the most recent version available. (I have had it about a month.)Will downloading a newer version require stopping current downloads (even if I do not install the new version)?

GooRoo February 4th, 2005 12:40 PM

LimeWire 4.4.1

I have now downloaded and installed the BETA 4.3.3 (which turned out to be 4.4.1) from the original post in this thread. I now find that I am an "UltraPeer", and the quality is now 'Turbocharged". Under 4.2.6 I rarely saw more than five users downloading from me; under 4.4.1 I have 20 active and 10 queued! That is a lot of difference! (Now if only I had had it before I lost those two huge downloads. http://gooroosgruntz.neronhosting.com/emoticons/sad.gif )

Kaiju Nexus February 5th, 2005 05:05 PM

I simply downloaded the newest version of LimeWire (4.4.1) without even knowing about this error (just to have it) and am now experiencing the "Could not move to Library" problem with the new version. I tried reinstalling, removing all previous installations, restarting my computer, changing library folders...EVERYTHING.

Please help!

roller4life68 February 24th, 2005 07:07 PM

I believe this problem has something to do with the Shared Folder location. I started getting this error after I moved my shared folder to my desktop. Could somebody tell me the default location and name of the shared folder? Thanks.

EDIT: The new version does work for me but I am trouble locating my shared files...
