Interesting idea. Could be true. I believe there's some issue about songs bought thru iTUnes site having limited share-ability. But it's not something I understand very well. I thought that was where the deauthorising of the songs via iTunes advanced menu played a part .. but I don't know. Perhaps someone else can fill us in here.

Someone else on the forum is trialling the same concept to see if uninstalling iTunes makes a difference to results. They're using windows. Will wait & see. ;)

Update on that ... does seem to have an effect for them (Fabion.) Once uninstalling iTunes & restarting LW their audio search results improved dramatically.

A note from rkapsi on this topic:

"iTunes is definitely not blocking LimeWire from sharing (I mean up- and downloading) files.

That would either mean there is a rudimentary Gnutella implementation in iTunes. A protocol analyzer like Ethereal (www.ethereal.com) would uncover such a component immediately. Or iTunes is using a similar technique like Virus scanners but that would break with every new LimeWire version.

And music files bought from the iTunes Music Store are DRM protected. LimeWire doesn't share them anyway out-of-the-box - the .m4p extension is not the shared files list."

Follow-up

Updated to Java 1.4.2 update 2 without problems, and now the LW jum build runs smoothly.

Thanks for all your help!

BTW, is there any value in retaining the Unix executables that were in the Limewire folder from an installation of the previous version of LW - "COPYING" and "SOURCE"?

What version of LimeWire are you using?

If it's 4.8.1, open the Terminal (in your Utilities Folder) and type

java -version

(there's a space between "java" and the dash).

What happens?

If you get an error, your java was pooched by the latest update. To fix, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36574

I'm using Mac OSX 10.3.9 and limewire 4.8 on a G5. For some reason LW just stopped working. The icon bounces in dock then disappear. My java seems ok, well i think. I have tried to delete LW and re-download for cnet, but no chage. All my updates are in date.

Please Help!

I think I'm having a similar problem but the symptoms are more specific if anybody can help. I connected to Limewire without any problems this morning and soon after installed the latest OSX software update (I'm up to 10.3.9) Now I have the bouncing icon and nothing happens. Limewire opens fine on my Powerbook which has not had a recent software update. Is this all part of the same problem that you are discussing? Thanking you in advance. Tim
