LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista and Windows 7+8+10

7 Attachment(s)
LW preferences folder is in same location for both Vista & Windows 7 and Windows 8. For Vista instructions with samples see lower down in this post.

Windows 10

Easiest method is START menu and type or copy-paste in %appdata% and bingo, you can open the appdata folder and find the LimeWire or any other program settings folder. As always make sure the program is closed and not sitting in the Tray before deleting or making changes to the program settings folder.

Attachment 6951

Windows 8

First CLOSE the LimeWire program & make sure it is not in the Tray.
Search > type %appdata% into the text field.
Roaming will appear listed below the search box, click on this listing and the Roaming folder will open on Desktop. Find a folder named LimeWire. Delete that LimeWire folder if that is your objective. Click here to see Windows 8 search sample image.

Second technique is: Go to Search, click on programs and type Run into the search box. Open Run and type in %appdata%

More information: Back up your Downloads file before deleting LW's preferences folder about retaining previous incomplete files.

Windows 7

First CLOSE the LimeWire program & make sure it is not in the Tray. In order to find the preference folder in Windows 7 you will first have to enable show hidden files and folders. You can do this by clicking on Start menu -> User Name -> Organize, in the drop down window choose Folder and search Options, in the next drop down window choose View and put a tick mark in the Show hidden files and folders. Then click apply to folders. (Sample image below which uses Administrator as example username)
Attachment 5182 (Click to see larger view)

Once that is done the AppData folder will show up click on it, then choose Roaming. In the window that shows up right click on the LimeWire folder. If you are deleting the LimeWire preferences folder then … First, remove or copy-paste the Downloads (downloads.dat) file inside it & place it somewhere else safe for now.
Then Right-click the LimeWire folder & choose Delete. (Sample image below which uses Administrator as example username)

Attachment 5183 (Click to see larger view)

* Note: LimeWire MUST be CLOSED if you are deleting the LimeWire preferences folder Or replacing the Gnutella.net file Or returning the downloads.dat file inside it!

More information: Back up your Downloads file before deleting LW's preferences folder about retaining previous incomplete files.

Directory location: C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\AppData\Roaming\Limewire

Quick way for Windows 7 users: Click on the Start button > type %appdata% into the text field > ok. You should now see a lot of folders - find the one named LimeWire ... that is your preferences folder.

VISTA

First CLOSE the LimeWire program & make sure it is not in the Tray. In order to find the preference folder in Vista you will first have to enable show hidden files and folders. You can do this by clicking on Start/User Name (Attachment #1)/Organize/ in the drop down window choose Folder and search Options, in the next drop down window choose View and put a tick mark in the Show hidden files and folders. Then click apply to folders. (Attachment #2)

Once that is done the AppData folder will show up click on it, then choose Roaming. In the window that shows up right click on the LimeWire file and delete it. (Attachment #3)

Edit:

C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\AppData\Roaming\Limewire

The AppData folder is a HIDDEN folder so you need to change option to show all hidden files & folders before you use the Vista search for it as described by Grandpa. (GiF animated sample image added below to help show you.) You can also see birdy's link in post #2 below for another tutorial on how to show Hidden files & folders in Vista.
* Note: you may wish to save your Downloads.dat file, see Back up your Downloads file before deleting LW's preferences folder about retaining previous incomplete files.

what does this fix?

I can get nothing to work.

6_pac April 16th, 2007 08:49 PM

The pref folder can become corrupted and cause LW not to function correctly. Deleting it(while LW is completely shut down) forces LW to create a new one and that should fix any corrupt files in that folder. Kinda like hitting a reset button.

Deleting it changes all the settings in LW back to the default, so if you've made any changes to the options, you should make a note of them before deleting the pref folder. That way you can put them back the way you had them.

Hi,
I just got Vista and am having some problems with LW. I originally changed my saved folder when I first downloadedd LW and everything was fine. Then today after downloading a few mp3's they are nowhere to be found. They appear in my LW library but when I search for them on my computer they are not there. I just went through these steps and deleted the LW folder in Roaming and when I re-started LW I had to re-set all my preferences, and once again I re-set my save folder. My files still aren't saving to my computer but are downloading. Any ideas??
Thanks!!

trouble searching

When I go to search nothing comes up and I have windows vista

aseals July 2nd, 2007 06:21 PM

On top of my limewire I have a little padlock is there should that be there

fhace126 August 14th, 2007 07:01 PM

that folder doesnt show up for me. it shows a bunch of other folders like the ones in the pictures but no limewire folder

gnb6451 August 17th, 2007 11:54 PM

Yeah, tried all that - the pref folder, the JAVA Reinstall, the uninstall of the firewall and reinstall of LW - you name it.
Having used Limewire successfully for several years under XP and prior, it is unacceptable that a product that I have paid money for does not work under Vista - this is 2007 for GS.
What is LW doing about it - I don't see ANY assistance to registered users with valid licences from them.

wondering why August 18th, 2007 01:33 AM

So what exactly is your problem ??

gnb6451 August 19th, 2007 11:24 AM

Vista - not loading

with many other users, under Vista LW won't get past the first bar when trying to connect. So many others have the same problem I can't see that it is specific to my system - I am running windows firewall and AVG for virus checking otherwise it just a normal basic set up.

My limewire has a problem of freezing. So I did all of this, but I left limewire open on accident. Does that affect anything?

birdy October 10th, 2007 10:15 PM

LW needs to be closed. Make sure that LW's properly closed & then do it again;)

smallfry99 October 12th, 2007 04:43 PM

I did it again with limewire closed, but then wen I open limewire I can move around and do stuff for about 15 seconds, when it freezes again?????

birdy October 12th, 2007 08:40 PM

What version of Java are you using? If you've been using 1.6.0_01 or 1.6.0_02, try the latest update. Download the offline installer & remove your current Java version(s) before you install this one.
Java SE Downloads

If that Java version gives you trouble, try this older one. Again, download the offline installer & remove any other Java versions before you install.

NOLA_1977 November 23rd, 2007 06:16 PM

Ok. A ton of people with many types of PC’s are experiencing this same problem, which leads me to believe that this is a Limewire problem. I’ve read the threads and I’ve tried everything. I just paid money for this and I just want it to work. What’s the deal Limewire?
“Limewire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network.”
1.Windows Vista Home Premium on a HP Pavilion dv9000

Initializing stops at 19% - loading messages

Deleting the preference folder worked perfectly to fix this problem.
Thank you

vampireju December 3rd, 2007 12:52 PM

im having the same prob, turned all firewalls of deleted bits added bits im sick of it if i new of another file share id use it, ive used lw for yrs on xp ive had a new laptop with vista and now nothing aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,
stupid lw,

NOLA_1977 December 3rd, 2007 01:27 PM

Yeah, It's not the pref folders or Java or the firewall. I even went through my email and downloaded LWpro on my other laptop which has XP on it, went through all of the steps and still nothing.
I'm starting to think maybe it's my wireless network. We have free city-wide wireless here in New Orleans provided by Earthlink. (Featherwifi.net) It's worked fine for a while but maybe they started blocking it or something. I'm gonna go try the coffee shop and if that doesn't work then that's everything I can think of.

SMV372 December 10th, 2007 07:22 PM

This worked PERFECTLY! Thank you VERY much Grandpa!

Vista and LimeWire

I have no idea as I haven't been back on to the computer w/ Vista that I'm trying to run LimeWire (it's a friends computer) I suppose I need to uninstall/reinstall LimeWire and that's as much as I know at the moment... I will keep u posted as far as you're more recent posts... I'm not to that point yet! Ha!! Good luck to you!! Hopefully you can help me later if not vice versa.... LOL:)

darkphoenix123 January 13th, 2008 04:11 PM

every time i try a search for music, a window box appears saying "currently trying to connect to internet, not a lot of results until fully connected." what do i need to do, because i can't get any music until its fixed!!!

ziggy161 January 13th, 2008 08:02 PM

Argh, I can't believe there's been no official address to the problem yet.

I'm just getting the 'need more sources' message for every song I look for....

Jesant13 January 22nd, 2008 11:59 AM

Good news: 1 out of 5 lights are lit in the connection bar. It partically helped. But not enough to be able to download music :(

Teksuni January 28th, 2008 11:59 AM

How to find the apps folder is in the very first post of this thread, so there's that.

Also, if you're not using an Administrator User Account in Vista, you will probably have some problems. Mainly the whole one green bar of connection issue. Here's how I got past them.

- Uninstalled Limewire
- Changed the user accounts to Administrator
- Reinstalled Limewire
- Set up LW in each account
- Removed Administrator from the other accounts

Also, make sure you only have ONE firewall going. If you're using McAfee and Windows Firewall (for example), one needs to be disabled.

Good luck!
