Salut Eric

You don't have to empty the trash--just moving the java receipts temporarily to the desktop will do.

I'm not sure which receipt needs to be moved: try moving all java receipts out first, then put them back if the reinstall goes properly.

After messing with receipts though, you'll need to Repair Permissions.

Java in receipts

Salut Stief,

Ok, I will try removing all Java packages from receipts, and re-install them from Apple.

In the meantime, I've also cleaned out the Virtual Memory swap files to see if that does something...

Will post back.
BTW, Living in France but originally from Montreal

Maybe I'm not doing something right.
I've dragged 2 install packages that have Java ( Java.pkg + Java142Update2.pkg) to the desktop as was suggested.
When installing the newelly downloaded Java package, I still get from Installer that "this volume does not contain any Java version that needs to be updated" (Freely translated from french...)
So I'm at a loss to replace the old with the new...
any other ideas...???

stief April 12th, 2005 10:21 AM

That's the same error message I saw (in English) when reinstalling java recently, but moving all java receipts to the desktop allowed the reinstall, so I'm not sure what's going on . . .

perhaps a shutdown for 2 minutes and then a restart will help. I'm assuming you're downloading this java update:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...update142.html

oops--that update doesn't mention French (I don't know if it matters).

Perhaps Software Update will work.

riseric April 12th, 2005 11:44 AM

Hi again Stief,
yes, it is that update that I'm trying to re-install...
I really don't know what's going on... Did you remove any other Java files appart from the ones in Receipts ??

I guess I'll try the gurus over at Apple's discussion forum concerning this issue.
Software update doesn't help...
Must be something else left over that's preventing all of this.
I've just tried one more time to re-install LW but with no more succes... :-((

Thanks again for your suggestions, I'll come back here to see if anything new comes up and post if I manage to fix this up.
ciao

I just removed the receipts.

hmmm--see if Jen-Uwe's CVS build of LW works. http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html --it uses a different installer (just the drag and drop).

JUM version

Tried the JUM version with the drag & drop...
Guess what...Like the others, no-go...
Got a thread going on Apple's Discussion Forum.
We'll see if that brings up something...
Salut...

stief April 12th, 2005 02:36 PM

OK--that confirms it is indeed a java problem.

Btw--you can open the Console (In your Utilities Folder), and an error message should show in Console's window when LW wont start.

riseric April 13th, 2005 12:49 AM

Salut Stief,

I did post in the beginning of this thread a report from console but this is the last one from this morning:

console.log:

Taille: 41459 octets
Dernière modification: 4/13/05 9:30
Emplacement: /Library/Logs/Console/eric/console.log
Contenu: Mac OS X Version 10.3.8 (Build 7U16)
2005-04-13 09:29:38 +0200
Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

So there's the Java line and also the Virtual Memory error...
If someone can make sense of this report...
There was talk of French vs English earlier, I'll reset my iMac for English and see if that does anything...

riseric April 13th, 2005 01:02 AM

Reset in English but still no-go and with the same console report except that it tells me twice about the error in initializing VM and the Java stuff...
Here it is one more time:

This is driving me crazy...
