Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default Limewire Browse disabled

I would like to see an option added to the next version of Limewire.
I have notice that while monitoring incomming traffic, almost 99% of those downloading from my computer have somehow been able to disable the browse option to them. If the Limewire software is able to detect such connections, could they create a option that would allow a host to restrict those connections. Not sure if this is the right place to make such request, so.....hopefully this will get forwarded to whom it may concern.

Sabotage:
A deliberate act of disruption in which equipment is hindered of normal operations.
What I mean by this is....I have been monitoring my computer with a eagle eye and I have noticed that almost every one of those that have been connecting (that have the browser disable) to my computer were attempting to download the largest files that they could. What this does is to tie up the computer for HOURS and pervents others from connecting at all. I have removed those large files and I'll continue to monitor my computer. I'll keep you posted on other bad habits I discover within this system.

I just seen a connection download a file from a directory (folder) that I had removed from sharing earlier this morning. Needless to say, they too had the browse option disabled. It's been a long night. I have figured out a way to weed out some connections (host) that I'd rather not have anything to do with. I did a search of "Porn" and attempted to browse each one. Most of them had little or nothing worth while to offer (just a bunch of garbage really) and it was much easier to block their IP since that option is available by using the right mouse key. Once I get all the bad apples out of the basket (this could mean 100's or even 1000's of blocked IP's), this system might be pretty good.

BTW...I ran a BBS many years ago called The Dragon's Pit. I ran it on a 8088xt with a 2400 baud modem and it was connected to 5 different network WWIVnet, LINKnet (can't remember the other's) and from my BBS users were able to communitate with others all over the world. This was way before the Internet was anything like it is today.
As a matter of fact, I still have my BBS just like it was the day I shut it down (on disk). I had over 500 users and I had over 25 different online game they could play. I mention these things so that you'll know I have a little knowledge of the network system. At any rate, I have got some more monitoring to do. I'll keep you posted on what I discover.

I have blocked almost 150 IP's at this time and it has helped. At least more people have be able to download and the logging is looking much better than before. Do what you will, but I encourge everyone to block whoever your unable to browse. You owe noone the right to enter your computer like that. I have come to the conclusion that a whole bunch of these IP's are either old and nolonger in the system or they're just bogus. I couldn't count how many of these IP's lead to a dead end. Maybe the pings/pongs need to get themselfs updated with what IP's are really working numbers.

Maybe. At any rate..... I hope LW gets the bugs worked. I can't be a host with Limewire the way it's working now. So I spent $18.88 on a program I'm not happy with....no big deal. I always seem to learn things the hard way.

This is not a bug, it's a feature. You can turn off the browse feature. If you want to know why I'd suggest searching the internet; there are good reasons for it. Blocking people who have the browse feature turned of would necessitate a search for every connection, clogging the network. Also, due to the way the network works, this would probably result in the network being effectively split in two, between those with the browse feature turned off and those with it turned on. Clearly, this is not a good thing, especially for those with the browse feature turned on, since they appear to be in the minority.

I'm using the Limewire Pro Beta and I haven't seen anywhere within the program the option of switching browse on/off. Would you be kind enough to point me in the direction of a forum that has this browse topic.
I guess I could use Google and type "Limewire browse issues". At any rate, I'm not meaning to come off as a jerk about this browse issue. I just don't like the idea of: "I can see you, but you can't see me" bit.

So...I just won't leave my Limewire running 24/7 as I had intended to do.

Interesting. I did a search of limewire browse issues and it points back to this discussion I started.

You're forgetting that LimeWire is not the only program on the network, there are others as well, and many of them do have that option. Also there have been development editions or forks of LimeWire in the wild that had that option. Perhaps two more things you should know: the browse host feature has been buggy in the past when LimeWire would send a malformed request packet so e.g. no results would be returned, and turning it off in some situatations cannot guarantee that no filelists are sent over the network, since if you connect to an ultrapeer, your filelist are sent anyway.

I'm really not concerned about Limewire anymore. I have decided thats it in my best interested not to use it as a host as I had great intentions of doing, but once I seen someone could connect to my computer and start downloading files I clearly removed from "Sharing", It was time for me to stop using it as a host. I assume someone had an old "filelist" that allowed them to get to the file/s I had removed from sharing.
It's also my understanding there are no refunds for this program and thats alright too. It seems like I have a bad habit of learning things the hard way and it ALWAYS seems to come out of my pocket. Such is life!

You can turn off 'Browsing' in tools/Options,go to 'sharing' remove all files/folders with the 'remove' button, untick share finished downloads box. Go to '' Uploads'' option, reduce bandwidth to zero, make sure ' allow partial sharing' box is unticked (often a reason for sharing things you may not want to) Go to 'Slots' and set to zero both uploads per person and max upload slots, and I bet NO one can upload anything from you ! if any of these settings are not correct,it may result in some of what you are complaining about. some are so paranoid they will not share,it's a personal choice, although it goes against everything that the internet and freedom stands for. get some education around this, and decide what you want to do,really there is so much information and help on these forums if you try. If you worry about who is sniffing around in your computer, get yourself protection use a packet sniffer to track in and out movements etc....
balance in all things said the tightrope walker !
Good luck
