Lime Take Over

Hi, So I just downloaded and am using the LW to pick up and share some cool tunes.
However, when I close the application, it mysteriously re-opens itself.
I went into options, and one of the last choices, barely visible was 'allow LW to start on system start up...[sic]'
The option was unchecked, so as to 'not' allow it to automatically start up...???
I checked it, and unchecked it just for good measure. But it has no effect. LW just seems to do what it wants to do... Which is start when it feels like it...

I may be wrong, but it took me a while to realize that you have to right click on the icon in the system tray and exit as opposed to clicking the X in the rh corner. This may be your issue.

kcandme,
Sounds like you have a virus, it's common at the moment. Point 4 in this thread deals with it
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=41432

Please read the whole thread, it's got great tips for avoiding virus probs in the future;)

Thank You

Yeah, I think you are correct sir.
I'm sorry, I downloaded something else along with some music.
I did a file of a size that certainly would not be what I searched for. When searching for XP Media, don't download a file of 40,000kb. DUH!
I have initiated the process of clearing the system. I should be in good shape soon.

Thank You for your help.

lol lil confused on help

Ok I rem. some stuff about speed when had a modem, now on adelphia cable how do I check (find my speeds)Need to tweek my LW have tried many diff. settings on slots, downloads, uploads, eic. all that failed. When I first got LW pro think was 4.6.1 I was amazed how fast it was, comp.'ed to modem. Now on 4.10.9 it is so slow I can't beleieve it's like a modem download speed and uploads are faster , so I cut uploads to 0 and still is slow as a snail! I use XP pro, 2.8ghz proc., built in motherboard web inhancers, 1394 net adapter, Intel Pro/100 VE network connection

ThaGr8NorthWest541 March 18th, 2006 02:12 AM

Optimizing LW

After reading through all 14 pages of this thread and trying all suggested hints, I still haven't cracked the nut, so to say (you'll understand what I mean after reading the rest; if someone finds the time to do so).

First infos on my system:

Regarding my system:
1. OS version? (Eg: Windows 98)
XP Pro SP2
2. What firewalls you have?
Windows built-in
3. How much ram?
1.024 GB
4. Hard Disk space available?
Drive C: 13.7 GB, Drive D: 9.27 GB (more or less)
5. Connection type? (Eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
ADSL 512kb/s - 256kb/s by TT&T Thailand
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
King Com ADSL USB Modem - Conexant AccessRunner USB ADSL WAN Adapter
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
from home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
LW 4.9.23 PRO, FW 4.9.37 & 4.9.10, Java 1.5.0_05 and 06 (I'm back at 06)
9. Who is your ISP provider? ( AOL/MSN/Comcast/Tiscal)
TT&T Max Net
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
Not sharing with anyone, though I've installed LW and FW, I never run both at the same time.

Besides those information, I've been running 'Peer Guardian 2' (disabled at the moment) and the Firewall from XP without any problems up until that crash. I regularily check my system with AVG Anti Virus, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spy Sweeper, Bug Doctor and Error Doctor. Besides, I'm running the BOINC client with Einstein, Seti, Climate and LHC @home.

My LW setup:

Cable/Dsl
Disable Ultrapeer Capabilities: NOT checked (marked)
Enable OOB Searching: checked (marked)
Maximum D/L: 15
D/L Speed: 100%
Upload bandwidth: 20.12 KB/s
Uploads per person: 1
Max upload slots: 5
Listen on Port: 35248
Use UPnP: checked (marked)
Allow freeloaders: rarely

Tests I've been conducting following the suggestions here in this thread:
Speed Tests:

First Speed Test from 9.18 pm till 9.24 pm Bangkok time with LW open via http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Server SF/Ca = d/l 244 kbps - u/l 120 kbps ( d/l 30.5KB/s - u/l 15.0KB/s )
Server NY/ = d/l 267 kbps - u/l 111 kbps ( d/l 33.4KB/s - u/l 13.9KB/s )
Server Se/Wa = d/l 276 kbps - u/l 77 kbps ( d/l 34.5KB/s - u/l 9.6KB/s )
Server LA/Ca = d/l 309 kbps - u/l 91 kbps ( d/l 38.6KB/s - u/l 11.4KB/s )
Server Da/Tx = d/l 194 kbps - u/l 86 kbps ( d/l 24.3KB/s - u/l 10.8KB/s )
Server Chi/IL = d/l 331 kbps - u/l 106 kbps ( d/l 41.4KB/s - u/l 13.3KB/s )
Server Atl/Ga = d/l 308 kbps - u/l 106 kbps ( d/l 38.5KB/s - u/l 13.3KB/s )
Server Wa DC = d/l 251 kbps - u/l 109 kbps ( d/l 31.4KB/s - u/l 13.6KB/s )

Second Speed Test from 9.25 pm till 9.32 pm Bangkok time with LW closed and the same test side.

Server SF/Ca = d/l 423 kbps - u/l 197 kbps ( d/l 52.9KB/s - u/l 24.6KB/s )
Server NY/ = d/l 425 kbps - u/l 194 kbps ( d/l 53.1KB/s - u/l 24.3KB/s )
Server Se/Wa = d/l 422 kbps - u/l 197 kbps ( d/l 52.8KB/s - u/l 24.6KB/s )
Server LA/Ca = d/l 424 kbps - u/l 199 kbps ( d/l 53.0KB/s - u/l 24.9KB/s )
Server Da/Tx = d/l 426 kbps - u/l 196 kbps ( d/l 53.3KB/s - u/l 24.5KB/s )
Server Chi/IL = d/l 413 kbps - u/l 194 kbps ( d/l 51.6KB/s - u/l 24.3KB/s )
Server Atl/Ga = d/l 424 kbps - u/l 197 kbps ( d/l 53.0KB/s - u/l 24.6KB/s )
Server Wa DC = d/l 421 kbps - u/l 195 kbps ( d/l 52.6KB/s - u/l 24.4KB/s )

Since I am in the nothern part of Thailand, I decided to try some speed tests using Asian servers with LW closed. The first at 9.47 pm and the second at 9.51 pm

1st a Malaysian server via 'xpeedometer'.......result:
d/l 342 kbps/s (d/l 42KB/s) for 500KB size in 11.937 sec.

2nd an Indonisain server via http://www.mystarone.com/speedtest
.......result:
d/l 463 kbps/s (d/l 58.04KB/s) without infos regarding size and duration

To my present state of condition with opened LW at 10.10 pm:

23 movies in download queue with "need more source"
1 movie in download queue with "connecting......" (trying to connect)
8 movies in download queue connected to host(s)
- 1st movie with 5 hosts at 54% d/l speed 0 - 1KB/s
- 2nd movie with 3 hosts at 51% d/l speed 0 - 2KB/s
- 3rd movie with 3 hosts at 48% d/l speed 0 (without displaying remaining time)
- 4th movie with 2 hosts at 33% d/l speed 0 (with displaying remaining time)
- 5th movie with 4 hosts at 32% d/l speed 0 - 1KB/s
- 6th movie with 3 hosts at 30% d/l speed 2 KB/s
- 7th movie with 1 hosts at 23% d/l speed 0 (without displaying remaining time)
- 8th movie with 2 hosts at 20% d/l speed 0 (without displaying remaining time)

2 people are in the progress of uploading a movie from me. Both are using LW and the upload speed varies from 0 - 4 KB/s

Information from the lower part of the LW window:

poor connection (while writing all this my connection went up to "good connection")
globe without brickwall
77 files to share
d/l 9@0 - 10 KB/s (varies)
u/l 2@0 - 4 KB/s (varies)

Result of bug report conducted at 10.15 pm:

Receive Incoming Session : true

So, I first like to appologize if my information is so extensive, but I thought (following the advice of some moderators here) it would be better to give you to much than not enough.

My question is, as you can imagine, regarding the low d/l and u/l numbers. Any idea where I have to change something, or adjust, or tune, or whatsoever to get both numbers to an exceptable level ????

Besides, thanks for taking the time reading all this and all the other stuff we non-geeks ask you on a daily basis (specially me:cool:   )

Okay, now it's already 24 hrs later (4-4 06) and my limewire shows:

9 files connected to 36 hosts (all-in-all) with a download rate fluctuating between 1-9 KB...........

Sometimes I feel like crying when I read some users' concerns in a drop of download speed from 50 KB to 30 KB

Well to start off you mention a crash what happen. Did you end up reformatting and reinstalling windows. If so are all things the same as before is your computer set up with the same programs/ISP/Firewall/routers/modem ?

It was rather a FW program crash than a complete system crash. And my wife confirmed the displayed error message (means, justy clicked 'OK') and then restarted the computer. In general, my system runs pretty well. No conficts, no system crashes every now and then, no freezing, no hanging, no viruses, no spy or adware. I can even run several applications at the same time without the computer becoming sluggish (i.e. LW, Win AVI video convert and the BOINC client, which runs always in the background, and FireFox browser). My computer set up is the same I've used for 6-8 month. The same for router, firewall, ISP.
