Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Question What does the score mean? + More

I've been using Limewire for a few weeks now, and I've downloaded tons of stuff. The Score column in search has always read 100.

Earlier this morning, the score was 75 on all of the results. Now it is back to being 100, but I'm curious as to what the score is?

I looked through the user guide and the faq and I could find no answer.

Also, what does it mean when the ip address (location) is in red. I have personally found that these red locations always download very well, but the black ones never do.

Finally, I have been downloading a lot of stuff and the downloads were always working fine (there would be a few couldn't downloads, but nothing major).

Now I have been running a search, getting over 100 results, and choosing to try to download about 20 of these files to have at least one be successful. I've done this 4 times in the past two days, and it always reads couldn't download. This seems very odd and bizarre to me. It is not even working in those red locations.

I tried another search (for a different file) and was able to initiate a successful download in one attempt.

What is the problem here? Is there any way that limewire or gnutella automatically filters certain searches and inhibits downloads? I checked to see if I had any filters on personally that would inhibit this search, but I did not.

Thanks for reading. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I seems that the score is the percentage of words matched in your search phrase. If your search phrase consists of 4 words and the filename contains all 4 words you get a score of 100. If it only contains 3 out of the 4 words you get a score of 75. The calculation of the score might be a bit more advanced, but I haven’t been able to find any information on that either.

If the IP address is red then the computer is usually sitting behind a firewall or using a "private" IP address which can't be addressed on the Internet, which might make it more difficult for you to get files from that machine (but obviously not in your case). If you are behind a firewall yourself you probably can't get any files from a computer with a red IP address.

I haven't got an answer for your last question... sorry!

LimeWire does not inhibit downloads. You can choose to filter out searches with certain words, phrases, etc., but LW won't stop you from downloading something. The only viable answer to your question that I can muster is this: If you try to download something during a busy time of the day (internet peak time), you will find few hosts accepting new connections (their upload slots are full), and thus you will get the "Couldn't Download" message after a few automated attempts. Also, make sure that you are sharing your files, which I'm sure isn't a problem.

This isn't really directed at you Fred, but to others who may be reading this. One of the main problems plaguing the Gnutella network is that there are too many freeloaders who are not sharing files. They download things like crazy, but won't share anything themselves. As a result, all of the people who are sharing try to go and download something and end up not being able to download anything! To ensure a higher quality network, make sure you have antifreeloader features turned on in you LW options (Tools>Options, Advanced Tab).

Everyone who shares on the Gnutella network should do this to make the network better. And if you're not sharing, please share! :-)

Unhappy you misunderstood

First off, let me say that I am always sharing at least 300 files and I use a cable, so I am not one of those freeloaders (I filter freeloaders).

My problem is that I can download files from any other search, but not this one particular one. I have tried 7 different sessions now.

It is very peculiar. I am usually downloading/uploading big movie files and haven't found any problem, and even though these files are large (150mb to 600 mb depending on which version I try to download), I've downloaded other large files without this type of problem.

Granted, I dont expect every download I try to work. But when I try 200 different locations and get no response on 7 different occasions, I start to wonder what the hell is going on.

Everything else works fine. It's very disturbing.

I did not mean to imply that you were a freeloader. If you feel that I did, I apologize. I've had days where I got hardly any successful downloads, but your case is just plain bizzarre. What particular file were you looking for? If I try to get it and it doesn't work with me either, well...... we won't jump to any conclusions. Give me the specific file name you are having trouble with, and we'll go from there. :- )

I dont want to get myself in trouble, but I'll just say I was trying to download a new American movie about pie. I wanted 2 get it in .avi form, but I also tried .mpeg and .asf. I dont care if it is in 2 parts or 1, I tried it all.

Dont try downloading a ~45 MB avi file claiming to be the full thing or a ~99 MB mpeg part 1 of 2 (or the counterpart for that file - a small mpeg claiming to be part 2 of 2)

If it's the real thing it will probably be at least more than 100 MB if split into parts...

Thanks for your help!

I've tried, and I am attaining the same results. There aren't too many copies of it yet, though. That is, at least, when you compare it to other released films. You can find older films everywhere.

There is the possibilty that this is a hot item. Many people may also be trying to get it. Have you ever had two people try to download the same file from you? I have, and LW will give the other person the same response as if all the upload slots were being used. Two downloads of the same file cannot occur. "Waiting Xs for x busy" is the typical message in LW. So if other people are trying to get these files too (which is probably true because of this film's recent release and immense popularity) I would say that the problem is too much demand and too little supply. :-)
