Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default even emule has a "fake File" list ....

I'd have to be the first to say limewire is far better then 99% of the other P2P clients out there. HOWEVER... There are a few companies that I have traced that are really abusing all of you limewire users.

edit

I'm sure you've all see the file types "z_e_u_s_! and P_A_G_M_A_K_E_R! and titles of the like. there always an executable file and ALWAYS have every damn marketing promo tool there is INCLUDING hijack warez. T3 or higher.... looks good to the unknowing user.

If you make the mistake of thinking this is a ligit file you soon find your computer over run with registry hacks and hijacks that only allow you to view ONLY the site they are marketing for. Like "findwhatevernow.com" .. try to go to google and your browser now tells you www.google.com can't be found but you can search for anything on ... guess who? MSN or findwhatevernow.com ... yes they are working with microsoft. My rant here is wouldn't it be helpful if limewire would use similar technology to edonkey, emule etc... and have that oh so needed "bad File" list?

Some of these people should be banned, understandably it's not possible in this environment however ....
There are other ways of protecting the limewire community and the reputation of it's network quality.
I'd like to point out a few things for the community to prevent further damage to your systems. First off if you see files with .wmv
just say NO ... same companies use that bs for baiting you into their marketing and your wasting your time and d/l ratios. T3 or higher - .exe files and you can never "Browse the host" ... be warry of this combo.
If your a linux head like me ethereal will spot them for you before you make the fatal mistake my son did on his system.. he runs XP unfortuantely ...
I do believe they now make ethereal for windows, if not get a good windows ip sniffer and just block their IP from your host.

Best,

ringo ...

But it is possible to ban certain hosts. You can also enter keywds to filter out many of those unwanted results in one's searches. Particularly .exe, .jpg, & .wmv. Reasons for this rubbish can be attributed to seen here! (click link.) As aggressive as they may seem on the Gnutella network, they can be worked around if care is taken.

Thumbs up

I agree Lord,

One of the things that I didn't see mentioned in that post was "malwares", well maybe in part. I'm taking aim at those who would misslead someone looking for music or music tabs in this case, delibertly name a file to intice someone and basically "infect" their system with malicious marketing software that is not only destructive but is even coded to circumvent current spyware removal and anti virus software. This unlike some of the other things mentioned is deliberate pointed to end users under false information and whether or not you want it .. you got it. There are things that go on that I would consider wrong, illegal and imoral yet, none of the porn, illegal warez etc, is pushed to you under false pretense to take control of your personal computer for someone elses financial gain. We all see the porn and warez .. it's a choice you personally can make, you know what the file is and what it contains. This is not the case I've seen more and more of lately. You're mislead into thinking the file contains something other then what it actually is and the end result is often harmful. Personally I just "blackwhole" their network on my system and thats easy to do with linux however, I know there are many more windows users out there that really don't have a simple option as I do. It's really a sucker punch at best. I will continue to post the names and IP's of all companies that make a practice of this unacceptable behavior in hopes that some of those peeps that have been duped will take the time to call or email the abuse addresses in an effort to discourage them doing this ON this network .. go do that crap on kaaza ... or IMESH.. sheesh .. I think I need to cut back on the coffee

Ringo ..

I read the rules and regs Morgwen. I didn't think it was out of line posting the names of those who would with malicious intent damage personal property and community reputation. I really don't want limewire to end up as another kaaza or Imesh and it's those kind of things that make those networks shabby to say the least. I'm very much for open systems, obviously (linux) and will continue to support limewire. I would never mislead anyone with "false" information - the names I posted are "positively" the malefactors. Ergo, I have only sent a ligit warning to unsupecting limewire subscribers. I do believe you take no credit for any postings or claims to agree with anyone that makes a post in the forums hence you have no liabilities for my statements correct? I take full responsibility for what I have said and can completely prove it's validity. Of course if you think this unwise I will take note and discontinue at your discretion.

Still it would be nice to have a way to ban ip's client side even if they are not allowing browse like the ones I mentioned or maybe a bad files list. That would get me off my soap box

You know that the Whois service can sue you for posting such data?

And what do you mean with "personal property"? If such companies damage files, sure not "personal property" they will try to stop the illegal sharing of "copyrithed files"...

Our rules are made to protect everybody not just a few ones, for example if anybody post your telephone number i will also delete it or do you want that hundreds of maniacs call you?

You can make a list and offer it on a private server or via Gnutella.

I don't mean to be argumentive here Morgwen but "whois" is an open source utility and as such anyone using the "whois" utility can access any server that is also runing, finger, gopher, whois etc..

Many organizations like "ARIN" have very large data bases which contain IP's for public use. Anyone can do a lookup and find an IP. IP's are a matter of public record -- It's just like doing a DNS lookup, DIG or NSlookup and there is nothing illegal in doing so. This is like catching someone driving down the highway and commiting a crime, taking a picture of their license plate and posting it -- "have you seen this car?". Nevertheless I did NOT have to use those tools to get my information. Packet sniffers do a much better job....

However I do agree with the phone numbers .. ok your right there I should not have posted those in the forum.

What I mean by personal property Morgwen is my computer, legally it's considered "Personal Property" because it can be moved, it's not fixed in location. And if you or anyone were to send me a virus you'd be in deep sh** I assure you. What I was saying in my orginal post was (if you read it) my son was looking for guitar tabs (which by the way are not copywrited and are public domain. There are many sites that post them legally) Several marketing companies are naming their hijack, malwarez etc .. after any popular software - informational ebooks - MPEG - JPEG -- anything to make YOU believe you've found what your looking for ... until you run the application .. then your hosed.
For instance: My son was looking for "jimi hendrix - little wing" guitar tabs .. found it and downloaded it. Of course when he opened it .. it ran no less then 5 malwarez and hijacked BOTH his browsers (mozilla and IE) one of the malwarez actually shutdown his anti-virus so that it could install without being detected! And no adware did not fix the problem - neither did hijackthis or anyother program. Thats destroying "personal property" and there is legal precedence for a law suit, which is being persued.
These companies won't do jack it's like the pot calling the kettle black and they know it all too well. The only recourse is to blackhole their network OR let them know you'll sue them.

I think thats a good idea Morgwen -- I'll post it on a private net for the users -- thanks

Ringo

I know that everybody can access the data BUT you aren´t allowed to post this data, without permission, on a public forum - CHECK THE TERMS!

You can always sue those companies, I think this will harm them more than posting their IPs...

That's the point. The information is there for anyone to check it out themselves. I'm not, nor have I suggested that anyone do anything with that information -- Other then be warned those ips and companies are doing just what I said. If you think it's a ruse feel free to download one of their files .. I think that would probably make my point even clearer. I think that it falls under the title "common sense".

If you want the information and it can be of use to you great! If not Great! Either way is quite ok with me. I think most people would bother to check what I'm saying first and validate it as I'm sure you would. Be my guest.

Ringo.
