Problem with AOL is you never know which ISP you are 'really' connected through. AOL rents lines thru a local ISP in your area, so the local ISP's rules apply (whether you realise or not, so p2p bandwith shaping or p2p blocking could occur without your knowledge.) ;)

That might be part of your problem. ;)

AOL's ip's tend to be dynamic as well which doesn't help.

ie: good idea to investigate the policies of the local ISP's in your area if using AOL. Find out if they have anti-p2p attitudes.

No FW is not the new LW, it's been around for a few years as a break away from the prospect of LW selling out to it's pressurers to close its services. FW at present suffers same as LW does because they follow the same changes.

Won't connect?

Limewire has worked fine for me up until about a week ago, all of a sudden it says there's a firewall blocking it. Still even when i turn off my firewall(whch i shouldn't have to do anyway) it still doesn't let me connect. i get that one tiny first green bar but the rest are still red, and it still says it's blocked by a firewall. if anyone knows how to fix this please help me out

Try the fixes in the thread below. If nothing there helps, post back with your system details.

In Limewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- Try one fix at a time --- do them in this order:-
1. Check your firewall.
2. Delete/Replace gnutella.net file
3. Delete Preference Folder (otherwise known as the Limewire folder)
4. Update java
5. Change listening port
6. Go through the rest of the fixes.
if after all of this your problem remains click on (system details) fill in and post back here

I know you have done para 2. but do it again please

Has anyone encountered issues where it will work just great somedays and other days it insists I'm behind a firewall. I've noticed this on occasion and I'm trying to figure out why. I originally thought that it was because I'm on a wireless internet connection that is available throughout my town, and therefore wouldnt always have a stable connection, but it doesnt appear to work period lately. Any reason why there would be a change, even though I haven't changed my settings?

My Specs are as follows:

1. what OS version (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista) ? Windows Vista Home Premium 64, service pack 1
2. What firewalls you have ? Windows Firewall
3. How much ram ? 4GB
4. Hard Disk space available ? 320GB
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ? Broadband
6.Modem what brand name & model numbers ? Iburst
7.Router brand name & model numbers ?
8. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accommodation, work, etc.) ? Apartment, Work, ETC
9. What version,LimeWire & Java, are you using. Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.? Limewire 5 Free Edition, Java Edition 6, vers 12
10. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ? Redwood Wireless( A Local company)
11. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ? "Your test worked"
12. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No
13. Is this your 1st try at LW, or is this a new problem with an experienced user.? I've used older versions, pretty new at LW5
14. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ? No
15. Have you given full permissions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ? Yes
16. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?
17. In Start & remove Programs, Is this update Installed, "Security Update for Windows XP (KB931261)" ? No, most recent is KB958687
If Windows Updates are not seen, Tick the box at top of page, (show updates)
18. Are you using Manual Port faward in LimeWire OR UPnP ? \UnPnP
You can check HERE, IN LimeWire Go, Tools/options/advanced/firewall Config
