 Are you trying to direct connect with your friend, or are they trying to find your files in a search? Direct connect is probably easier, that way your friend will be able to browse your shared files & download from there. But...for direct connect to work, you should both have chat enabled & not be seeing LW's firewall icon (brick wall in front of the blue earth).
