more info about desktop/laptop setup

Found this reply so I'm filling it in....
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. OS version? WIN XP PRO SP2
2. What firewalls you have? AVG and Windows , both disabled
3. How much ram? 4GB
4. Hard Disk space available? 300GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Cable Modem
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem:Motorola Surfboard SVB5120 Router:Linksys Eatherfast w/ 4 port switch
7. Where are you trying to connect from? house
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? LW 4.8 0 Java 1.6.0__06
6. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Optimum Online
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? GOT "Your Test Worked!"
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No other Computers
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. 2nd try, works perfect on laptop, not on desktop
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image Do not have blue world Icon at all!
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? Tried both, neither works, originally set up as UPnP.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...lies/smile.gif Use Windows Firewall and AVG Security Suite. Usually Win Firewall is disabled. For limewire, I disabled both.
16. What country are you living in? USA

Hopfully, this is enough information about my system. The fact that I don't have the blue globe icon might mean something.

Thanks for any help.
Jim

OK, I shut down the laptop and removed it from the network. Only the desktop is connected. Changed the port to 49152 in limewire for both the listening port and the manual port forward. Also added port 49152 as the TCP port and the UDP port (did NOT get an error that the port is already used?? ...originally had UDP set to 49154).

For this test I disabled BOTH FIREWALLS. With the new port settings, tried both UPNP listening on port 49152 and manual port forwarding listening on the same port. No combination of new port, UPNP or manual forwarding, firewall(s) on or off, and only 1 pc connected to the router.

Any other suggestions???
Thanks,
Jim

From the computers with LW not working: Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

Have you tried these options: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

Missed your 2nd post. Ok ... Optimum online are reknown for being problematic. But if one of your LW's works then that shouldn't be the issue. Port forwarding means actually forwarding a port in your router, not just changing settings within LW; PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

So it seems the default port of 6346 is not blocked, just something is interfering in the connection & incoming messages.

Here's an odd suggestion but it might work; try installing FrostWire. If it connects, then close it & open LW & see if it connects.

My listening port is set to where it needs to be. I still cannot connect. Nothing new happened to my computer before LW stopped working, except I uninstalled an older version of LW and replaced with with the Beta version that just came out. Are there links to the Beta LW and the connection issue?

Try the suggestions in BOTH the previous two posts #1516 & 1517 above this one. :)

Trying frostwire next....

Thanks for the tips, LOTR, I tried fostwire. Worked perfect first time. closed it down, told limewire not to make it the default magnet???, limewire doesnt work.

Aside from the obvious (use frostwire instead of limewire) Any other suggestions before trying all of the stuff in the link you mentioned in your post?

It's described here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html which is where you should have looked before posting anywhere. :) That's what the RED Sticky's at the top of each section are for, providing answers to commonly asked questions & problems. ;) :)
