For those who can't connect

For those who are having trouble connection to the Gnutella network using LimeWire, we have a potential fix. You need to delete your WHOLE LimeWire preferences directory. The directory can be found in the following locations:

OS X:
/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.

I'd love to hear how this works for everyone.

Thanks!

one more thing....

One side effect of this potential fix is that you'll lose ALL your preferences. You'll need to reset them. For most users this shouldn't be too huge a deal.....

If you really want you can keep the deleted directory around and simple move your limewire.props file to the new directory, but this may invalidate the fix.

We will hopefully discover what is causing this issue and integrate an automated fix in a future version.

shutting down limewire

I'm sorry to hear this method isn't working for people. One thing: are you positive you 1) completely closed limewire (this means making sure that the limewire icon is not residing in your system tray, dock, etc.) and then 2) deleted the appropriate directory and then 3) restarted LimeWire?

I should have made step 1 more clear - you need to make sure LimeWire is totally shutdown before attempting this fix.

Thanks!
Susheel

NikixNicole November 9th, 2003 09:02 PM

do you have limewire set to auto load when u sign online?
cause i had to take auto load off...and now just click the icon on the desktop after i sign online...

sweetsculler November 10th, 2003 06:40 AM

that worked!

sdaswani November 10th, 2003 07:34 AM

For those users that still can't connect, we are investigating the issue further. Again, please make sure that 1) you don't have personal firewall software blocking connections and 2) that your ISP does not disallow gnutella connections.

I'm glad to see that the technique is working for some users. Though it is very surprising that the fix is not as general purpose as I thought it would be.

new November 10th, 2003 07:21 PM

it worked for me too..... thanx :D

thatguy2 November 10th, 2003 10:52 PM

sharing problem

Maybe it is because the sharing indicator is constantly on red and I have one file being shared that Limewire does not work. I can type in a file name to search for and enter - but nothing happens. I have not attempted to use limewire for weeks because of this problem. I am using Windows XP HE, and cannot see a preferences directory to delete in my docs and settings folder. Unless I find a solution I can never use limewire again.

C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

i don't have this file on my computer. i have windows 98. what do i do? i have the same problem as alot of people. just flashes green for a second.

it connected fine until my whole internet disconnected like it likes to do alot.

Limewacko November 16th, 2003 12:29 PM

Got it working!

Here what I did...

First, the "delete-the-pref-folder" advice did nothing for me.

Steps:

1) Launch Limewire. See the new "Tips" dialog box? DISABLE the show-tips-at-launch checkbox. Then click "ok" and hope you never see that box again.

2) Go to LimeWire Preferences and disable the auto-connect at launch option.

3) Quit Limewire. Then relaunch Limewire. Then manually "connect" from the menu. Voila!

I surmise that the new Tips box is interfering with the application's ability to connect!

Jude806 November 16th, 2003 02:07 PM

that worked. thank you limewacko.

flogging molly here i come.

legaci23 November 16th, 2003 03:53 PM

I have Windows XP

here are the steps that I took:

1: Go to Start Menu ( lower left corner)

2: Go to My Computer

3: Click on Local Disk C:

4: Click on folder - Documents and Settings

5: Click on you User Name (example: Chris)

6: Delete (.limewire) folder

Then restart limewire......it works for me.

potny November 16th, 2003 05:38 PM

OMG! That worked for me for mac osx. Thank you limewhacko. All I did was disable connect at startup, quit then re-opened and manually connected. SWEET!!!

afisk November 19th, 2003 03:28 PM

When you guys try to connect, do you see the round icon in the lower left flash green for a second and then go back to red?

We know of one potential cause of this problem that we've implemented a fix for, but we're not at all certain that this is the cause of all issues users are seeing. I suspect there may be a couple of different things occuring.

If everyone could post their operating system when they post problems, that would be very helpful. Most have been, but just a reminder. It looks like this is a problem users are having on all OSes.

Thanks for everyone's patience.

About the problem with it not connecting:
I tried deleting the preferences, and I tried Limewhacko's method but it still achieved no results for me. I'm using Mac 10.2.8

ski007 November 30th, 2003 09:56 PM

No Thanks

I am a new user with $ 18.88 invested in a program that won't work, and your suggested fix does nothing to correct the problem.:(

ski007 November 30th, 2003 10:07 PM

Thanks, but no thanks!

Does not work! I feel I have just been ripped off for $ 18.88 for a program that does not work. I should have read the compaints on this forum before I paid the money.

Ski, let me say a few words about this forum.

Limewire reports right now that 150,000 people are in the gnutella network successfully. If say, 10% of them are using Limewire, that means that fifteen thousand people are using Limewire successfully right now, as we speak. Perhaps there are one hundred or two hundred active threads on this forum right now. To have a problem with Limewire is WAY out of the norm. Most people as you can see from these basic statistics, use Limewire just perfectly fine.

Limewire is a very successful application. A couple people, like yourself, experience problems, but we can almost always fix them.

Now, if you really want your program to work, you have to tell us what your problem is. Do you go to a doctor and say "I feel bad", and hope he figures out why? No. Similarly, you can't come here and say "Limewire doesn't work". If you sincerely want our help, please tell us your specs (as in, what kind of computer system you are running, OS, Limewire version, etc., etc.) and what exactly your problem is.

Computer Deb December 1st, 2003 10:17 PM

It DID work for me!

I thought I was crazy. Two weeks ago, I was able to download and then all of a sudden I couldn't open Limewire at all. Followed your instructions and it loaded up right away! Thanks!

lwuser999 December 4th, 2003 06:03 PM

I'm using a G5, running 10.3.1. Just bought LW PRO. When attempting to connect, the red "Connect" dot flashes to green for 1-2 seconds, and back to red. Have tried suggestions to delete prefs, to disable the tips dialog, to disable auto connect (and connect manually from the menu) - all to no avail. No connection. I've checked, and personal firewall protection is off. I'm really not sure if my ISP disallows gnutella connections, but I won't be able to verify this till tomorrow. Somehow, I don't think this is the problem. What gives?

sdaswani December 4th, 2003 07:14 PM

lwuser999,
have you tried using a different port. go to Tools->Options->Advanced->Port and set the port to a different value (any value is fine - try 7000 or something). then try to connect.

thanks!
susheel

Works on Linux

This fix seems to work well on Linux 2.4.23 (RH 9.0 base).

Thanks!

It works!

Running Windows XP (Pro)
Limewire Version 3.6.15 (Basic)

Basically what I did was:

1) Exited Limewire, and then closed down its icon in the bottom-right task bar.

2) Opened My Computer\C:\Documents and Settings\(*username's folder here; NOT the one that says All Users*)\

3) Deleted the .limewire folder

4) Reopened the Limewire application, and ya know what, I could not be more glad to see that green light once more!

THanks you Sdaswani

Computer Deb December 6th, 2003 05:46 AM

Progress?

It would be nice if the people at Gnutella could let us know if there is any progress being made in fixing the connection problems with Limewire. Otherwise, I can go about deleting Limewire from my computer and forgetting about it forever...
