Glad to hear you got the UPnP up and working. :) Different routers place the UPnP option in different locations. Two ways you can change the Java to administrator. But you need to be running Windows 7 or Vista. If running XP or earlier, there's no issue. Either right-click the Java installer and choose Run as Admin., else to do it manually with the Java app., see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tallation.html Could be various reasons your LW is freezing up at times. If you could supply a system config. for us, we can look it over to see if there is anything that might be related to it. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...-you-post.html Also tell us which version of Java you are using. Also, (1) how many files are in your library and (2) how many incomplete downloads? You can get those details from (1) top right of your library window. (2) Far left top of your downloads window. |

Have you given up on me? :( |
Oops sorry I became distracted and temporarily forgot. :o I was too tired when I first saw your post not having slept for almost 30 hours, then became distracted the following day as soon as I logged in. A fellow member suggested maybe your Norton Security Scan is having some effect. As the files are downloading it's continually scanning them. Perhaps try temporarily disabling the Norton Scan to see if that improves things. Personally I cannot see anything wrong with your system set-up. A thought passed through my mind about both your LW and Java being set to Run as Administrator, but I doubt that would really change things if your LW is running fine otherwise. Only other thought but probably not relevant is if you are running the router wirelessly. But I sort of doubt that would have so much effect as continuously temporarily freezing the downloads. Running Wirelessly is traditionally reknown for inconsistent bandwidth. But how much so varies between brand and model and set-up. |
I had Limewire Pirate working up until a few months ago, when I took my laptop in to be fixed. I reinstalled it and now it won't even open up. I click on the lime and the the picture of the pirates and the window opens up, but that's it. I have Windows 7 and my laptop is only a year and a half old, brand new when I bought it. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get it up and running again? Thanks!! |
Did you upgrade to Java 7 in the meantime? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tml#post348148 If the problem is not Java related, try deleting your LW preferences folder: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tml#post183932 Also make sure LW has a firewall exception. Another possibility is another security software you have installed is blocking LW from opening. You would need to put LW on that program's exception list. |
Thanks, I'll try these suggestions and let you know how it goes. |
Well installed Java 7 and uninstalled Java 6. Clicked on the Lime and got a message that I needed 6 or higher to work Limewire. Put 6 back in, still get the same message and now I have both 6 & 7 on my laptop. I don't understand about deleting the Limewire folder. Is there a simpler way to explain it? |
You need to go to your Control Panel and open the Java Control Panel. Click on the Java tab and press the View. You will see what Java versions you have installed. Disable Java 7 and make sure Java 6 is checked. To find the LW preferences folder. Go to Start menu, type LimeWire into the search box. You should see a LimeWire folder listed under files. Hover your cursor over-top of the specific listing and it should specify the location. C\Users\your account name\Administrator\AppData\Roaming If you do not see it listed, click the Files name to see more results. If it is not any of those then you will need to change your view settings to find it unfortunately, even if only temporarily. I am mainly a Mac user, maybe a Windows user has a better explanation or technique to find a file or folder that is inside a hidden folder. This is the only way I know. To change the options of viewing files and folders via the Organise menu. If you find the folder in question, right-click and send to Recycle Bin. If you had incomplete files, you could return the Downloads file from the recycle bin back into the new LW prefs folder after your first session of using LW again. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...how-hidden.gif |
I took out Java 7 and put in Java 6 Update 35 64 bit and Java SE Development Kit 6 Update 35 64 bit and I still get an error message saying I need Java 6 or higher. What is with Limewire? It never used to be so complicated. |
Check your Java control panel to be sure Java 6 is active/enabled and Java 7 is either removed or disabled. Edit: I forgot you are using Windows XP. In that case Java 7 must be totally removed from the system or else LW 5 will give that same error. You can use the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel to remove Java 7. If you wish to keep Java 7 then you will need to create a shortcut to the LW.jar file in the LW program library folder: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post368753 http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...-7-java-cp.gif Yeah a bit of short-sightedness by the LW devs on the Java issue. |
No, I'm using Windows 7, laptop. My mother still have her XP, for now, but soon it's time for an upgrade to 7. |
My apologies for not being accurate for earlier instructions then if using XP, and misreading your response. NVM. But if needed, to delete the LW prefs folder for XP see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tml#post183932 though the sample image may have been from Win 2000. Maybe time for her to upgrade to a mac. joking :D Best wishes for your mother. :) BTW only LW 5 versions are affected by the Java 7 issue. |
I tried but I got as far as "AppData". I clicked to show folder and apply but there wasn't any Appdate showing up or anything saying "Roaming". Am I missing something? |
Quote:
Anyhow, try this for finding the preferences folder... Win 7: Click on the start button. Now type %appdata% into the text field. Hit the 'enter' button. Do you see a folder named LimeWire listed? If so, that's your preferences folder. Win XP: Click on Start > Run > Type %appdata% into the text field. Hit the 'enter' button. Do you see a folder named LimeWire listed? If so, that's your preferences folder. |
1 Attachment(s) Depends whether you are on Windows 7 or XP. Only Vista and Windows 7 have a Roaming folder. Windows 7 is C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\AppData\Roaming\Limewire Windows XP is C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\Application Data\limewire If you are not seeing AppData / Application Data folder then it means you have not properly enabled viewing hidden files and folders in the View option settings. Another trick is Click on "Start" and click on "Run", now copy and paste this code here: %APPDATA% Then click "OK" That will take you inside the Application Data folder where you should see the LW folder if using Windows XP. Or for Windows 7 simply copy it into the search box in the Start menu. Or alternatively for Windows 7 copy this into the Start menu %APPDATA%\ with the backslash on the end then press enter. Win 7 example: Attachment 6695 Oops timing, I bumped my head as Birdy jumped in front of me to reply lol. :D Birdy and LOTR were taken to the nearest hospital for a cup of coffee. |

Post #5 here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tml#post183932 explains how to back-up incomplete downloads if you have any. But after deleting your LW settings files you will need to reset your downloads location first time you open LW again. What are all the files in the preferences folder? There is the downloads file as mentioned above which records details of your incomplete downloads. There is a library file that details both all files you have in your library and those files you are sharing. There is a props file that records general settings such as your download location, contains blocked hosts and search terms, connection history. This props file is maybe the most common file to become corrupted and zeroed. Not sure about the others. There is the gnutella file which is the file that helps you connect. There is a xml folder that contains specific details about your library files. There is a fileurns file that seems to detail shared files specifics and locations. Probably the largest of all the items will be the browser folder. This is disposable as LW will create a new one next time it is opened. Your Library in LW will probably be empty when you open LW. You can always re-add files to your Library via drag and dropping the files from your LW download folder. |
Browser ; mozilla-profile ; xml ; createtimes.cache ; downloads ; fileurns.cache ; installation.props ; library ; library5 ; limewire.props ; lock ; mojito.props ; restaccess ; secure-ids.data ; secure-ids.lck ; secure-ids ; secure-ids.properties ; tables.props . |
How annoying ; the same advice that worked perfectly for sleepybear is not working for me . |
Quote:
tables.props I forgot about, that's your settings for the interface that is different to the default, such as if you stretched the interface wider or higher and also your settings and columns and widths of them chosen for the search, shared and library windows. mojito.props is obviously for the mojito protocol. It seems to contain minimal details. I suspect one of them is a hash check for files with known viruses. |

I click on Start and type in %APPDATA%\ and a bunch of file folder pop up, including Limewire. So I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do to get Limewire up and running properly. Oh and there isn't a "run" option in the start menu that I can see. Assuming it's available for Windows 7. |

If you had any incomplete files you wished to keep, you should back-up the downloads file from within the preferences folder before deleting the LW prefs folder. Which LPE version did you install, File_Girl's version or the original version? |
Quote:
How do I install a connection fix and I don't know which version I have except 5.6.2. I don't think it's File_Girl's version. |
1 Attachment(s) Quote:
The first post of the first page of this thread shows the two LPE options. But perhaps you did not get your download link from here. The difference you will see between the two versions is the startup screen. File_Girl's is different. Attachment 6697 File_Girl's version is the lower start-up screen. The LOL image above it was metapirate's original version. |
There was no gnutella file in my lw preferences folder '; if that helps me to connect , that could be my problem . |
Then yes, get the LPE ConnectFix and try again. :) By default, the LPE ConnectFix installer will replace a gnutella.net file that might already be there. |
I guess I'll uninstall it first. |
Okay I went to 4share, registered and downloaded the free version. I see a bunch of file folders for limewire, but not sure what they are or what to do with them. |
Thank you lord , i am connected to 5 ultrapeers at last ; you must delete the lw preferences folder first ;then use the lpe connectfix ; its the key . Message 278 of this thread by lotr is very important . |
But i am sharing zero songs now ; how do i share my library with other members . |

Ok robine from quebec , have you successfully used limewire in the past or are you a first time user ?? |
Quote:
Unfortunately when you delete the LW prefs folder that is a side-effect. To resurrect shares, you may need to go through your download folder and choose or select from your Music folder etc. Files or folders can be drag and dropped onto the share icon to share them. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/gettin...w-5-2-8-a.html |

(1) instructions. (2) File_Girl's LimeWire-Fix2 installer which will prevent LW deleting your connection file if not used in 30 days. (3) Choices between security blocklist installers to block out the very worst spam and ddos hosts, these are optional installs but include a connection install within the installer. (4) LPE program installer. Next step would be to install either of the security packages or else the LPE ConnectFix. The latter will be more up to date than the one provided with the LPE package. On a side-note, the security blocklists were preliminary releases. I have updated them since and they have grown in size but will not re-release them until I downsize them slightly. LimeWire 5/LPE versions have much less memory ability than the prior LW 4 versions so I am trying to be careful in this regard. Light security and Medium security options, obviously the Light one will require less memory use. |

If I could get this up and running, I would a very happy Limer. :) |

Although the post is very old, check Sleepless's post here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/gettin...ation-etc.html. Alternatively send Sleepless a message to inquire on the best ways these days. |

Or for 4Shared, LimeWirePirateEdition_Win.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download but use the blue Download button, not the green down-arrow which would download the 4Shared Desktop app. |
Thank you lotr ; i just downloaded the lovely sk*fall from the new j*mes b*nd movie and got that normal message from avg saying , done but unable to scan for viruses ,; is there anything i can do to change the settings to have it scanned or is it totally up to avg to make the changes . |

AVG stopped support for LW's virus scanner end of 2010 I think it was. |
