Wrong Folder????

When I use then connection fix - September the gnutella file goes to C:\Users\*MyName*\AppData\Roaming\Limewire
and LimeWire has its own gnutella file in
C:\Users\*MyName*\.limewire

Why?

Lord of the Rings October 17th, 2012 12:42 AM

Edit: above problem is caused by java updates being 64-bit. Re-installing the 32-bit java last fixes the problem. Symptoms are changed locations for both the settings folder and download folder, and error window when opening LW and disability of connecting.

That seems odd.

C:\Users\*MyName*\AppData\Roaming\Limewire is the default for Vista and Windows 7 for LW's preferences folder. Only reason it might be sent somewhere else is if a props file within the LW application folder is telling it to.

Which version of LimeWire are you using? Maybe a very old LW 4 version? I cannot remember which version of LW 4 changed location for the prefs folder, around 4.10 or so.
It sounds more like you are using a portable version of LW or something.

If you are using Linux then yes I could understand the file being in a location similar to what you described. I think C:\Users\*MyName*\.limewire is the default location for Linux, they still use the .limewire location.

I am sorry I have not created a similar installer for Linux. I tried a year ago and totally wiped an entire 1 TB drive, so I was not enthusiastic to try again after that though I did try at least. I do not use Linux myself.
I could create one to be installed via Windows, but do all Linux users have Windows installed on their systems?

StingRayZZZ October 17th, 2012 04:05 PM

LimeWire help?

I use windows 8.
But I moved the gnutella.net file to the correct location and limewire 5.6.2 pirate edition is working now :) but i just wanted to let you know that the connection fix is posting it in the wrong location.

Im so confused because everyone else seems to have it right. Maybe its because im using windows 8.

Thanks :)

I can now open Limewire, but still have the same problem as I orignally did. It says "connecting" and the bars on the lower left are blank.

What's the next step?

Lord of the Rings October 17th, 2012 04:38 PM

Have you tried a fresh LPE ConnectFix? LPE ConnectFix.zip (click on link)
LW must be closed when you use the connectfix. And after opening LW leave it running 20-30 minutes. If still no connection close LW and re-open and leave it running up to an hour and see if it connects.

The installer looks for the user's app data folder and limewire folder within it. So perhaps there's something different about Windows 8.
Good to hear you are now connected anyway. Strange happenings lol.

I guess I shouldn't say we are not supposed to talk about warez on the forum, you were put on the spot with a query. :D :wasntme:

Left for an hour, twice, still won't connect. Anything else?

Yes robin , you must first delete the limewire preferences folder , then run the connectfix ;

Post 278 in http://www.gnutellaforums.com/gettin...tml#post370277 by LOTR. Which version of LPE did you install?

If nothing works check http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html and if none of these work then post back your system details: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...-you-post.html

Yesterday I was using LW 4.18 then 4.14 versions on a Mac. I was unable to connect using any version of LW 4 until I disabled TLS in Options -> Advanced.
But that was a common problem for me with LW 4. It may only apply to some other persons as a fix.

Once you see the limewire folder after you reach the appdata folder, you right-click the LW folder and choose send to recycle bin. Then re-use the connectfix installer. Then try opening LW.

That would only work if you changed your view settings to show hidden files and folders.
You said you were unsure which of two LimeWire folders were the ones you should delete. If you right-click each of them and choose Properties, it should say the location of the folder. If it is the correct one, then right-click the LimeWire folder and choose Delete.

If you were a MacOSX user I could write an applescript to do it for you and reinstall a fresh connection file and then launch LW in one go. lol :D

Are there 2 folders named LimeWire, or is one named LimeWire & one named limewire (or something like that)?

The way the folders are named could help to give us a clue as to what's happening - so the exact spelling of the folder name can be important.

And are they both folders, or is one possibly a file & one a folder?

robinepowell October 23rd, 2012 09:00 AM

When I do the appdata thing, I only get one Limewire folder now. This is what's inside.

Browser
Mozilla Profile
xml
createtimes.cache
downloads.dat
fileruns.cache
gnuetella.net
library.dat
library5.dat
limewire.props
lock
mojite.props
restacesss
secure-ids.properties
secure-ids.script
ttdata.cache
ttrooo.cache

Lord of the Rings October 23rd, 2012 08:45 PM

And that's the folder you can delete. :) After that redo the connection fix then see if LW will connect.

robinepowell October 25th, 2012 11:41 AM

I can't delete the file folder. Am I supposed to delete certain things inside?

Lord of the Rings October 25th, 2012 01:33 PM

Right-click the folder and choose Delete. Or drag and drop the folder into the Recycle bin. If it's your computer I presume you are logged into the computer with administrative powers.
What happens when you try to delete the folder?

robinepowell October 25th, 2012 01:50 PM

I already tried deleting it. Telling me how to won't change the fact it won't work.

I right click, I try to move to recyling, nothing. I right click and I get open, scan for viruses, include in library, restore previous versons and send to desktop (create shortcut).

If all else fails delete the contents. But the folder itself might be corrupt, particularly if you are unable to delete the folder yourself.

robinepowell,

I think that runt66 was just adding a little humour - I'm sure no offense was intended, since they've been trying to help you in this thread :)

When you're trying to delete the LimeWire folder and no delete option shows, is the LimeWire program properly closed - so that no LimeWire process shows as running when you open Task Manager(Ctrl+Shift+Esc)?
If a LimeWire process shows as running, end the process & then try to delete the folder.

Have you tried to delete the folder using Ctrl+D?

Have you had this problem (no delete option showing) with any other files or folders?

Sorry I took a while to answer, for some strange reason I did not see your post until now.

I'm a little confused. You say you are running Windows 7 but the error report says Windows XP. I will presume you are running Windows 7 and come across the recent Java update issue. But then, the Java version reported in the error report says Java 6.

Your problem might be related to http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...ting-java.html
ie: re-install 32-bit Java but download the Off-line version and choose Run as Administrator to open the installer. Does not matter if you normally use 64-bit Java, seems the installing of the 32 bit version last fixes the update issues. But make sure they are set to Run as Administrator.

The Java site's 64-bit Java install auto-links to their Java 7 download page. So keep that in mind. If you installed this version then see the advice above.

* It's my guess there's a small chance you have 64-bit Java 7 installed, and 32-bit Java 6 installed. It's all 6's and 7's to me. You can check via your Java Control Panel. Click on the Java tab and View button. This will show the versions installed. If you have Java 7 installed then you have a choice of disabling it or seeing http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post368753

If you are actually using Windows XP, you will need to download the Java 6 offline installer: http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/downlo...BundleId=69512 and use your Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs CP to remove any Java 7 version. LW 5 versions will not run on Windows XP if any version of Java 7 is installed.

Edit: OK according to a previous post of yours, you are indeed using Windows 7. So it's my guess it's the Java update issue. And you may have two versions of Java installed, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit Java.

This is a totally irrelevant & totally off-cuff comment, but I just have these thoughts that since Java's ownership changed hands, things have become problematic. I see something in the way the website now works that reflects an attitude of theirs. . But on the other hand, LW 5 and Java 7's main issue is the fault of the original LW 5 Windows version developers. This same issue is not showing up for either Linux or MacOSX LW 5 users of Java 7. The LW developer in control of the LW 5 Windows development ... I won't mention names. He disliked this forum unlike some other LW devs. But his competence is now a black mark on his A$$ and heck how an ugly dark tattoo is hard to get rid of. lol

The Ugly side of the latest Java Updates

Thanx Lord of the Rings, for your help. I was finally able to get limewire 5.6.2 to download by installing and uninstalling Java's, til I found the right one to work with it. Now if I could just get limewire to connect I'll be great. And again thank you for taking out time to give me a hand I really appreciate it!

Great to hear. :) Go through these suggestions http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

I know for any of my LW 4 versions to connect on my computer, I usually had to disable TLS in the Advanced tab -> Performance. This may or may not help in your case for LPE.

There's an updated connection-fix installer as of about 12 hours ago. With this installer LW needs to be closed when you use it. Then open LW and let LW run for 25-35 minutes. If no connection, then close LW, wait a minute and open LW again and let it run for half an hour or longer. If still no connection then try the connection installer again. If still no good try the other options in the link I gave or post back to let us know how things went.

It's a re-listing of mirror host sites that were on the first page a year ago. But these links do not have labels, simply categorized via mirror server and OS version of LPE. I will add to the first page and add appropriate titles to the links. :) These are alternative links to download LPE versions from. Although the actual mirror servers are different ones to a year ago.

The advantage of these mirror sites is it is easy to download from. No waiting or secondary steps before downloading.

My hosting equivalents: 4Shared need to be a member. Hotfile 15 second wait. FileCloud need to have any adblockers disabled for their site. I have not experienced it yet but Hotfile do have a policy of removing files that have not been downloaded after a period of time. So I only host the more popular files there. Similar reasons I do not host large files at some other popular host sites.

runt66 December 4th, 2012 06:14 PM

Prettyjam is downloading my entire library of 1709 mp3 songs in one continuous stream ; is that because he is putting them all on his iphone or ipad or itunes ???

Lord of the Rings December 4th, 2012 08:07 PM

There are users out there whom will try to occupy your upload slots for as long as possible (if you share a lot of files.) This has been a known approach/strategy of anti file-sharing companies. So I am always suspicious when I see similar behaviour. I've seen obvious such behaviour from hosts from a number of countries.

If you are 'super' suspicious of their behaviour, give them a temporary ban. But remember to remove that ban at end of session or a day or two later. I keep a notecard open to note any addresses I should remove later on. And yes I do see similar behaviour from same hosts later on. If it happens too often then I give them a more permanent ban.

I would be interested in knowing their host address if you could forward it to me. Firewall console will usually list it.

Apologies, did not mean to confuse you. MacOSX has a console which logs system actions including the firewall. I am not sure if any Windows firewalls have anything similar.
The last two numbers of any identity are probably 95% of the time the last two numbers of their host address. So I simply type these into the firewall console and it brings me back the possibilities and how many connection attempts they've made.
Alternatively I also use a 3rd party frontend to the OSX firewall which can list connected hosts.

I can only give you the host address if you give me detailed instructions what to do with hp vista home premium ;
