The bad news and the problem now is that when I try to run Limewire I get the message shown in the picture below. So, I finally installed it, but I still can't even run LW. Any other suggestions? Thank you very much. |

you're probably better off uninstalling version 5 and installing 4.18.8 from here -- when you uninstall go to start --> all programs -->limewire -> uninstall (windows XP SP3) |
I need some help too! :) This is actually for my Grandfather. He/we bought and purchased Limewire PRO after his one year subscription was up. It worked well for about 2 months... new operating system look and everything. Now we can't open it. It gives us the same error message repeatedly. "Limewire couldn't open" then it goes on to tell us that there must have been a problem with installation. I've uninstalled and reinstalled until I'm blue in the face. All I want to do is call someone to walk me through the reinstall... or tell me what the issue is, but I can't find a number to call. Any suggestions? Should I jsut give up? That would be $40 down the toilet for my grandfather... and I would HATE that. Please advise. Thank you. |

1. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/333278-post2.html but use your offline installer if you have one. Pro is always an offline installer. Also, before installing: delete the LW preferences folder; http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tml#post183932. 2. If using Vista, set the installer to run as Administrator. After installing, set the LW program to run as administrator. Do each by right-clicking the file & choose Run as Admin. |
Need help Limewire will download and start up. I click on the first button that comes up and it crashes everytime cant figure out how to get it to load. I have tried the backup installer and it doesnt work |
Try the process suggested in step 1 above. And as suggested, if you use Vista you need to set both the installer & LW to run as Admin. Another thing to try is, change the compatibility mode of LW, set to run as Windows 2000/NT, or if using Vista set to run as XP. To change compatibility mode, see point #5 or 6 here Fixes for Limewire (click on blue link). |
BTW if anyone is interested in downgrading to LW 4, please see Why is LW 4.16 superior to LW 4.18 or LW 5?. :) LW 5 will not be friendly to everyone's system, but that's been the nature of LW, one version doing ok, the next not on a particular person's system. ;) |
Alright... I'm ****ing pissed and sorry for my cussing but.. like my name says, WHAT THE **** LIMEWIRE? I had the previous limewire and saw the new update, so I went ahead and updated it so I could get the newest limewire. Then when I try starting it up after downloading it says Limewire Couldn't Start :-( And then goes on with it's bullshit about reinstalling. I reinstalled. Still nothing happened. So I use this back up link and it still ****s up. My limewire was fine and then this new shitty update now made it so I can't even use limewire! :( This is rediculous. Help me please! And sorry for my cussing again as I said.. im just so ****ing pissed! |
Alright nevermind. I just downgraded. Alright for every1 here's a tip! Go to my computer. Then Program files Then double click on limewire. Go to .NetworkShare Then boom! all of the installations for the previous installers. Works completely fine, and just use the previous limewire which is 4.16.6 And then the error thing doesn't pop up! Completely normal. Hope this helps guys! |

Thanks for that info. Am running XP and un-installed the failed installation then attempted to reload with the following message: "Errot opening file for writing". Have tried "Retry" with no success then "Ignore" with the download continuing but then without any way to start the program as "windows is unable to locate LimeWire.exe". Do you have any other suggestions? |
System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) :) Try this approach: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/333278-post2.html. __ IF still no good, try Download ‘Other’ version & simply unzip & use! |
Thanks for the info, I'll give it a go.:) |
I get through the initial part where the installer is put on my computer. And it goes into the part where it says select language, which I do, then starts to download. It gets to a place where is says an older version of LW is running, and I should shut it off before continuing. The thing is, I have nothing else running except for that installer. And Ive tried to uninstall it myself before installing it but that didnt work. So i decided to tell it I shut off the old version, and it continues. and part way through it says file incomplete or corupt. and gives me the option to abort, retry, or ignore the file. Ive tried all three. retry imediate gives me the same options, abort cancels the installation, so i continue with ignore, and it does the same with one more file. I get to the end, and half the time it works. the other half it says download corrupt please download again. when it does work, I start up limewire, and it goes to the screen with the lime guy. and it just stays there. doesnt do the searching for limes thing or ANYTHING. just sits there. eventually it says another version of limewire is running and shuts that off. Ive tried restarting my computer and all different ways to make sure nothing is running that is getting confused with. And Im out of ideas now, after trying to install all the other versions i could find, and using the backup installer on this page. so hopefully someone can help me out :) I have a Windows 2000 OS ? im not sure, my computers in its dying years, and if you need anyother information that i should be posting but am probably forgetting, ill get it to you. Im not sure about my java either. and i cant seem to find it a.t.m. So hope someone can help me. Thanks, |
Try the approach in post #466 above. :) However, do Step 8 first about deleting the LW preferences. Then start from step 1. ;) |
I was also wondering If I could use frostwire, a friend told me its basically the same thing, and to use it since lately ive been having problems with limewire. Ive used limewire for 7 years or so, and im just so used to it. but now I cant seem to get it to work for me. |
Go ahead & use it :) |
okay, thanks :) I was in the process of downloading but I didnt really want the ask toolbar :/ |
I just downloaded Frostwire and made it through the installation with zero problems. now that im starting the program, its doing the same as limewire and just sitting there... so its not a problem with the files i downloaded or that were left on my computer, it seems to be my computer itself. maybe java? any ideas. |
Well I tried to redownload it and Now i have same problems as I did with limewire. This really is a weird problem. something on my computer not allowing or not there that limewire/frostwire needs to initialize? I really need help on this one. |
Do you have Alcohol installed? Have you tried changing the program compatibility mode to Win 2000 or NT, etc. to see if it makes any difference? Fixes for Limewire (click on blue link) |
I just took out all of my limewire folders completely, and made sure I had music and stuff backed up incase i lost. So im gona try to start from scratch |
And still dosent initialize :/ hmm. let me try this preference thing again. also I did update my java to most recent. should I try a different version? |
|

1 Attachment(s) Wrong language setting perhaps. Go to where the Tools menu would normally be, & Options, if you recall the position of them. Miscellaneous tab is where the language can be changed. English is listed as first option in drop down menu. :) Attachment 5109 (Click to see larger view of sample image) |
Tried it wont work! it's like part of the letters are missing, so weird yet my pc is a pentium dual core got 4 gigs memory using windows xp pro service pack 2 |
I believe LW installer normally brings up the language settings the Java has been using. Might I suggest you try re-installing LW. No uninstallation necessary. Use this installer: http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWireWin-full.exe and don't flip through the options of installer too quickly. It should have a question about which language to be installed. If that does not work, try this technique: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/333278-post2.html which means also deleting the LW preferences. There might be an issue with your Java that is affecting LW. (not uncommon for Java to give LW problems!) |
hello. i have windows vista home basic operating system & i went to the official limewire site to download the application. the download went through however the installation will not. everytime i attempt to install it a safe mode screen comes up and states that there is "not enough memory to fit it". i've never had this happen before - been using limewire for several years on different pc models & this pc is fairly new so i can't imagine why it wouldn't have the capacity to hold limewire. The Hard (C) drive holds 65GB with 45GB of free space left; there's also a recovery drive which holds 10GB with 6GB of free space left. Currently the RAM is 502 MB now all of this is mumbo jumbo to me - i just want to know how i can resolve this issue. please help me! Thanks, Jscota |
Hi, I am really disappointed. Limewire forced me to download the new version. I tried on my Windows Vista computer and it repeatedly said installation failed. So, I came here, followed advice. Got rid of Java, re downloaded, re downloaded Limewire, used clean up software, got rid of all Limewire folders etc etc. I have tried everything advised including the back up installer and I continue to get the same error message. We then tried on the Mac, thinking that it was a problem with my PC. Same problem though it says 'unable to mount'. So, all I can guess is one of two things. There is a serious problem with Limewire software that they are not addressing (given the number of posts in this thread) or, they are intentionally making the basic Limewire impossible to download to force us to upgrade to Pro, which I am tempted to do but given the reports here, I would probably have the same problem. So, I suppose I am just asking if anyone knows how to get round this and can help me in simple speak as I am not a geek but work well under instruction. Thanks so much in advance. |
Hey when I download Limewire basic, it says it could not be saved because the source file could not be read. Ive tryed that back up installer nd got the same message. So any ideas? |
Try this technique: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/333278-post2.html :) As you can see this same link was posted in Post #484 & earlier. ;) |

Have you tried installing LW to a different location? |
I am trying to download Limewire Basic but each time I try I am givven the message " Unable to download Limewire... The connection with the server was reset." Does anyone have any help? |
A couple possibilities I can think of. Try using a different internet browser instead, such as Firefox for example. Check your security settings, make sure the LW site is on the safe/trusted site list. |
Hi,Checked both these.. installed Foxfire. Still no improvement! |
Now claiming "source file cannot be found" |
http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWireWin-full.exe or Thank You for Downloading LimeWire - Lime Wire right-click the download link & choose download linked file as .. or LimeWire - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com |
Thanks for all your attempts, but all end in "the connection server was reset" |
I have to say that I can't get it to install either. Is there another way to get music on my 'puter? |
Are you getting the same displays as me?... "the connection server was reset"? |
I get a big old question mark, as if the app is completely gone. I have re-installed 4.18 and I got it downloaded and installed but now it seems to have detected a non-existent firewall and won't let me get tunes. I'm pretty ready to give up. I am not as 'puter savvy as many here so I run out of options and ideas pretty quick. Might ask if anyone here knows how to detect a firewall that isn't up. |
wtf? I have used Limewire for years. Had to do a system restore, and now I can download anything under the sun (except NSA, NASA and CIA files) except Limewire! Has it been taken over by Homeland Security to interrupt musical messages between terror cells? "Is this the dawning of the age of Aquarius?"... not so innocent after all, heh? |
