Try this link (Fixes for Limewire when LW isn't operating as it should) also check in your add/remove programs that you only have one version of java -- if more than 1 delete the older version -- let us know how you get on

jennymac April 26th, 2008 10:00 AM

Still not working....

I've done this now a few times. Now my error messages is that an older version of Limewire is running and that's why it can't install. I have deleted everything relating to Limewire. I just don't understand. Please help me............

Lord of the Rings April 26th, 2008 02:24 PM

How did you uninstall LW? Should only do it via Start menu -> Programs -> LW -> Uninstall.
Then run this utility: Crap Cleaner

Then use this version: Download ‘Other’ version & simply unzip & use!

* You need to be sure you have Java installed. Also online installations of Java are often corrupted, so best to use the OFFLINE installers for Java for safety. Also some versions of Java run better on some people's computers than other versions.

robinepowell April 27th, 2008 11:07 AM

Thanks for the link, for some reason the .7 version didn't want to install but .6 still works. :D

Installation issue

Hi, everyone,
I'm new to this forum (and forums, in general). Have been using Limewire Basic for the last few months and it has worked well. Yesterday, I was prompted to uninstall Lime Wire and install a new version (4.16.7 or something like that). Each time I tried I was given the "corrupted installation" message that it appears so many others have received. I tried using the alternate installer with no luck several ties. I've tried using both IE abd Firefox (which is set up to clean itself with every close out. I know I should supply all the system details I can but some of that information I don't know how to find. The old version did not appear in the install/uninstall utility list (we have Windows XP). I believe the original version resided on the desktop because the icon's properties listed it as an application. There is plenty of room on the hard drive. We use Roadrunner broadband service from Time-Warner, through a Motorola modem and a LinkSys switch serving as a firewall. LimeWire worked previously with all this in place and none of it has been changed. System is protected by McAfee Security Suite. Hope I've give enough information for someone to help. Thanks!

In this thread scroll up to #356 and follow the advice given by LOTR -- this problem is happening to everybody who updates to the new version of late. Hopefully the people in Limewire will sort this out very soon.

Hi
Long time user of Limewire and big fan
When the new update came it went fine for us
Yesterday when my dad was using limewire he was having problems with it. So he decided to remove it and try to reinstall limewire again. I've tried the same thing.
Our problem is that the installer claims that limewire is still running on our computer and that we need to close it. But of course it is not running. Well after doing a search through the computer i still found the limewire folder, even though it was deleted from add/remove programs. Well i tried manually deleting all the programs, but it will not allow me because it says they are being used (mainly this aopalliance jar file and other jar files, and the limewire file itself).
I have tried the backup downloader and such.
help?

wondering why May 3rd, 2008 02:19 AM

It's always best to uninstall limewire via Start > All programs > Limewire/Uninstaller.....Uninstalling via the Add/Remove will cause problems.

It sounds like limewire could still be running, hence you not being able to delete the left over files manually. Try checking within your task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), if it is still running select the End Process option.

If Limewire was popping up all the time (the problem your Dad was having) try this fix....

have had limewire for a couple of years.... thought I'd download a video last nite cause I'd never done that before... BAD MOVE! The file was infected with some type of trojun. Got rid of the virus but have no idea what all it did to my computer the short time it was there..... Ended up uninstalling limewire cause the trojun had downloaded like 15,000 files and counting and I could'nt stop it. Thought I'd re-install limewire today but the online downloader just gets stuck on the page where it asks me if I want to "Enable content filtering" .... it won't take me to the next page to finalize. .... just stays on that page... What to do... Please help!!!!!

Delete your LW prefs folder as described.

Reinstall LW using the OFFLINE LW installer: http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWireWin-full.exe

WARNING: Viruses on network you should be aware of! (click on blue link) Make sure you are rid of the virus. Some anti-virus programs don't detect or remove them properly. ;)

Check above advice. Also under Fixes for LW options .. try changing compatibility mode, deleting prefs folder, & replacing the Java.

tgsteagall May 17th, 2008 07:36 AM

OK get this... I finally re-installed limewire( read elswhere on this forum that I needed to change my font size to normal- for some reason it worked) After the install, checked it and it had all my songs from the limewire that I had deleted.. in the new limewire library?????? How did that happen....??????

. (i dont know what it means) ok so i try to uninstall it, it wont uninstall limewire i think because of some file called aopalliance, ive deleted as many files of it as possible. the icon is not near the time, yet when i try to reinstall limewire it keeps telling me limewire is running. so i eventually press ignore, it continues to download them comes up with the message that it is corrupted.

HELP! PLEASE"

kittyrose69 May 20th, 2008 09:14 AM

alright, here is my problem/story:
i had like limewire 4.8 or something up for like 6+ months maybe, up until like an hour or two ago. i was downloading a movie clip, and it put it in a folder called"LimeWire" in Program files. previously it had been sending all of downloads into a folder called "Shared" and i had liked that. then i got kind of angry when it wouldnt let me put new downloads into the original folder. so i went and un-installed(in my frustration) my LimeWire. then i went to the lime wire site and downloaded the zip for the latest limewire. when i went to install it, it gave me a message saying that i had an older version of limewire running, and to close those. but i had uninstalled it? it said it might be an icon in the tray thing at the bottom of the screen iwth things like the sound, and battery life. but there was not a lime in there. so i went and deleted old limwire folders and tryied again. no dice. didnt work. same message. so i tryed clicking "ignore"(it gave me options"abort""retry""ignore") until it was done installing. then it said it didnt install correct and to try again. didnt work. then i took my anger out in MS Paint and made random lines. thats about when i went to the limewire site which lead me here.

HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

Try this: Install Java first. Download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions already installed (via Add/Remove Programs) before you install the latest update.
Java SE Downloads

Then install LW & use this link:http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWireWin-full.exe

i tried to upgrade to 4.18 from 4.16 and it started extracting then said error, failed to write. I tried your suggestion with same results, what can be done? I think there are still some old limewire files on my computer but there is no sign of limewire anywhere.

Slipcue June 25th, 2008 01:55 PM

Thanks for the info

I panicked for a moment when updating to 4.18. Had to restart computer. Ran back-up install. Got error message again. Retried and it went through.

Lord of the Rings June 25th, 2008 02:07 PM

1. Add/Remove control panel & remove all previous Java versions.

2. Start menu -> Programs -> LimeWire -> Uninstall.

3. Run this utility: Crap Cleaner

4. Reinstall java using only the OFFLINE java version installer: Download Java software from Sun Microsystems

5. Might be wise to delete the previous LW prefs folder:
Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.)
VISTA users see: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

6. Install LW using this version: http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWireWin-full.exe (Edit: (this link is presently dead for a time, try instead:) This post by Birdy)

Help

Here's my problem, I try to install LW 4.18.3 but I get this error:"Error! Can't initialize plug-ins directory, Please try again later."

I can give more info as needed, I was just wondering if there have been others with this problem that have been successful in fixing it.

If anyone can assist me I would be most grateful. Thank you.

I keep getting this error messege 'error opening file for writing' when trying to reinstall limewire. Any quick help. I am using windows XP.

melanielstevens August 19th, 2008 06:40 AM

I am also having problems with it, i did everything it says and also used the back up file, and still nothing at all then they send me a email saying to provide them with a e-mail address that can handle attatchments, like yahoo. well guess what my e-mail address is yahoo. now what.. I feel like i am getting the run around.

Russel August 19th, 2008 10:37 PM

My IT people have resolved it. They say there was a virus that corrupted the registry and hence any exe file was rejected.

My problem is similar to all the others. Got a new computer w/ Vista. When I try to download Limewire I open the containing folder. It has 2 files in it for Limewire. One ia an application file and the other is a PART. The Part gets a few bytes in it but the application never gets any even tho the download screen says everything id OK. When the download supposedly finishes the 2 files for Limewire just disappear from the containing folder. Any ideas? Old version worked fine on old computer w/XP.

Hello everyone. I'm new here, just wanting some direction and did not even know how to ask it until now? I'm having the same problem. it all appears to be installing, but when it's all done and i return to click icon to open nothing happens. i have uninstall/ installed about 3 or 4 times today

birdy September 5th, 2008 09:32 PM

Try updating your Java: Java SE Downloads
Download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before installing this one.

Next, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will change all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.
If you're using Vista: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista

If that doesn't help, right click on the LW icon > properties > compatibility. Try running in compatibility mode for Win 2000 or NT. If you're using Vista, run in compatibility mode for XP.

Do you have Alcohol software installed? If you do, look here.
LW starts then close, log: resolve_virtual_call

LW will not finish installing once I get to the screen that says "you're almost done". Any suggestions?????????

Lord of the Rings October 21st, 2008 10:22 PM

Try this version: http://www9.limewire.com/download/LimeWireWin-full.exe

Actually the problem might be with java. Uninstall all java you have & reinstall using only the OFFLINE installer (15 MB) Download Java software from Sun Microsystems

shorty91656 October 22nd, 2008 03:50 AM

same results

Well I deleted Java and reinstalled with the offline version and also reinstalled LimeWire. I got the same results that I did previously. UGH. This should be so simple. The last screen I got to on LimeWire was "you're almost done" and "I will not use LW 4.18.8 for copyright infringement". I really want this program! Please help........:mad2:

Lord of the Rings October 23rd, 2008 12:40 PM

hmm ... not sure why you are still having problems if using the OFFLINE LW installer I listed in my previous post. Another option is using the 'Other' version to see if same problems: Download ‘Other’ version & simply unzip & use!. Be careful to double-click the right LW icon to start the program. The largest one is the actual program.

tmarti October 27th, 2008 07:09 PM

Just hello!!!

Been using this program for years and love it. I have installed it on my vista business machine and was having some issues. I had to edit the registry after uninstalling version 4.18.3 and clean installed 4.18.8 (removed all references to Limewire). Everything seems to work well. My problem was that the upgrade would go thru the install process, when I checked the version It still read 4.18.3 so the upgrade did not work. The fix above solved the problem.

First two suggestions I'd make are (1) Delete your LW preferences; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included near bottom of page.)

(2) Uninstall Java using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel & reinstall using the OFFLINE installer. http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Did you re-install LW by the way, or is this a sudden new problem for an experienced user? Judging by the location of your preferences folder, I'd suggest an experienced user. The reason I ask is there is a small chance a virus 'might' be involved which is mucking LW up when starting up.
