BearShare has been sabotaged. (To obtain the most recent BearShare 5.1 installer with upgraded settings, see post #2 below) - Edit by Lord of the Rings or here. If you have any version at or above 5.2.0.6 your downloads can be arbitrarily stopped or limited by Free Peers at any time. This is what happened early this week when everyone with these new versions suddenly found themselves completely unable to download and then spent several hours at a crippled rate. Vinnie just had to test his new weapon, possibly to show the RIAA lawyers breathing down his neck that he could do it. To protect yourself from future episodes of sabotage, I suggest you switch to versions older than 5.2.anything and never upgrade again. If upgrade dialogs are a bother try the expired beta 5.1.0b25 and use the BearStart utility to run it. (edit: BearStart does not run on Windows 8 for everyone) (Instead, an alternative BSLoader can be obtained to work on any Windows version & with custom delay options & no pop-up window like BearStart.) * BearShare Beta 5.1 runs in forced ultrapeer mode and requires port forwarding for modems/routers. A firewalled ultrapeer is not good for the network or your personal use, so make sure you port forward your modem to allow BS 5.1's incoming port for both TCP & UDP. Updates: BearShareV6 and BearShareV7: Are both fakes. They are not P2P applications at all but are instead a sales platform for a limited repertoire of DRM-infested music files. Users are tightly limited in what they can search for and anything they try to share is "fingerprinted" so that all unapproved files wil be rejected. BearFlix. A crippled version of BearShare that limits users to images and short videos only. It still works on gnutella but the abilities to search and download are too badly crippled for it to be useful at all "Cracked" BearShare Pro: At best, not worth your time because the beta listed above gives you better control and the download maximums are the same or better. At worst, one of the cracked versions was improperly packaged with an old freepeers.ini file with the GUID 69D4F5C2D934FBEC6FC6CB06BDD32D29. Having a non-unique GUID breaks push downloads, causing what amounts to a DDOS against anybody with the defective software who happen to be firewalled and also against anybody who tries to download any file hosted by them. All firewalled users with this GUID are being blocked from the network in the Fullsize Hostiles List and the gnutella templist hosted by Bluetack. If you were wondering why your cracked Pro was performing so badly even as at kept your bandwidth maxed out all the time, now you know. |
To obtain the BearShare 5.1 Beta, clear instructions & fresh connection cache (which you will need) and upgraded settings, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/host-c...bearshare.html (click on blue link to the left). This version (upgraded by File_Girl) is more updated than the one in the first post above. This version should connect immediately. And should not have any problems with the clock such as the BearStart version can cause. Any version of BearShare after 5.2 is fake and does not even run on the Gnutella network, but a semi-commercial network with low quality DRM infested files instead. Quote:

Well I just tried installing bearshare lite, but it says that it is not a valid win32 application. Is there a way around this or I just cant use it? |
The file you downloaded was probably damaged. Try the two programs in the post at the top of this thread. |

Are you sure you tried "BSTEST05010b25.exe" and not "BSLITEINSTALL.exe"? I just tried and it's good. Try downloading it again. |
Well I tried downloading it one more time. First one I tried was from the top post (AaronWalkhouse) and it didnt work, so I tried the next one (in Lord of the Rings post) and it worked great. Im not sure if there is a difference between them tho, but somebody else might be able to tell. It was the "BSLITEINSTALL.exe" one that worked for me. Is there a difference? I hope I just didnt get a dodgy one..... But thank you for helping me. Im so happy to have BearShare back, without all the "extras" |
I have pro and it said not to download it if you have pro, it automatically downloaded an update the other day (5.2.2) and since then the only thing that will download is music. |

I heard that imesh went the same way at the end. It stopped downloading video files unless they were very small. It wouldn't surprise me if they made the same fatal error with BearShare. If you have pro and install any other version it will still recognize your license, regardless of what the company may say. The beta will still have better performance than Pro too. |
I just uninstalled the pro and redownloaded an earlier version, so now it works fine. |
They left out the adware. There was no point in rewriting the first page of the installer too. |
Question for Aaron i have downloaded the bearstart and the older version you have posted - do i remove the newer version of bearshare, install the expired version and open it with bear start?? i am going to try that - let me know if that is right, thanks, jd |
Just install B25 right over top of the existing version and your settings and layouts will be preserved. The next time you start it (with BearStart) it will be as if nothing had changed. |

Right. None. There might be an occasional Fastclick popup ad caused by an embedded webpage but you can easily prevent that by putting "www.bearshare.com" into the Restricted Sites Zone with your Internet Settings control panel applet. |
but do you remove zango from your computer? i deletled old bearshare but still get little zango things popping up |
Any spyware killer should be able to handle it, but I think the thing comes with it's own uninstaller too. Give that a try. |

Right, i'm a BearShare Pro user and i'm using BearShare Pro 5.0.1, i could update to 5.2 but i don't want to, is there a way i can get the latest 5.1 release anywhere for pro please? They keep bugging me to update to 5.2 even though i have updates switched off!!!!! bi*ches!! |

i have a question, since i upgraded to the new version of bearshare pro i am having problems downloading movie files, i search for the movie, get hundreds of results with loads of sources and when i try to download them the size doesnt match - eg, on the search page it is 730mb and then on the downloads everyone will turn to 700 or 698 and they just dont download. is this a problem everyone has and will getting the earlier version with bearshare solve this? i have uninstalled and reinstalled and that didnt help - i also have exactly the same problem on that new bearflix program - which if anyone is thinking of ownloading - dont. its full of bugs. i have mailed bearshare pro support 3 times but been ignored. |
Sounds like you were trying to download some of the fakes. Before downloading, right-click each likely candidate and use the Bitzi option. Sooner or later you will find the real one. Don't be surprised if the real thing looks like it has only 10 or 20 sources in the search. Once you start downloading, BearShare automatically finds many more. |
yeah thats how it used to be every odd file wouldnt work, but since i got the new bs it is EVERY file for certain films. and what does download is always a different size to the one i tried to get and always low quality cam |
AW I downloaded the programs just as you suggested and they work just fine. I'm downloading some songs even as we speak. I did go back and try to download the same songs on the Pro Ver but they all just sit there in waiting, offline, and in bla bla mode. What a rip off! Thanks for the great workaround. Hi, Im back with another problem.... I installed BearShare Lite awhile ago now (5.2.1) In the last month it has started to run slow, it takes forever to search anything, then to dl is just as bad. My internet connection is fine, I have adsl and everything else is doing as it should, just not BS. My questions are - - am I using the right version of BS Lite? - Should I use another p2p and just forget bout BS? :( if so, which one? (I hate LW) Sorry to be a pain. Wish BS hadnt of added that stupid zango **** and I wouldnt be here asking questions that must drive you all crazy. |
My personal opinion, if you don't want to use the BS that Aaron mentioned in his post with the BS Starter and you don't like LW, then Phex might be interesting for you. Phex :Smilywais: |

Phex doesn't have any adware or whatsoever. It's a clean free good program. And for the rest, just read through the Phex forum section here and then you will find the answers as well as you can ask the developers of the Phex clients, who are also the Mods in that forum section...... :Smilywais: |

But just wanted to check, cause I have been told one thing by a company and they turned around and did another. garbagefan2 - I tried shareaza awhile ago now.
