BearShare has been sabotaged.

(To obtain the most recent BearShare 5.1 installer with upgraded settings, see post #2 below) - Edit by Lord of the Rings or here.

If you have any version at or above 5.2.0.6 your downloads can be arbitrarily stopped or limited by Free Peers at any time. This is what happened early this week when everyone with these new versions suddenly found themselves completely unable to download and then spent several hours at a crippled rate.

Vinnie just had to test his new weapon, possibly to show the RIAA lawyers breathing down his neck that he could do it.

To protect yourself from future episodes of sabotage, I suggest you switch to versions older than 5.2.anything and never upgrade again. If upgrade dialogs are a bother try the expired beta 5.1.0b25 and use the BearStart utility to run it. (edit: BearStart does not run on Windows 8 for everyone) (Instead, an alternative BSLoader can be obtained to work on any Windows version & with custom delay options & no pop-up window like BearStart.)
* BearShare Beta 5.1 runs in forced ultrapeer mode and requires port forwarding for modems/routers. A firewalled ultrapeer is not good for the network or your personal use, so make sure you port forward your modem to allow BS 5.1's incoming port for both TCP & UDP.

Updates:

BearShareV6 and BearShareV7:

Are both fakes. They are not P2P applications at all but are instead a sales platform for a
limited repertoire of DRM-infested music files. Users are tightly limited in what they can
search for and anything they try to share is "fingerprinted" so that all unapproved files wil
be rejected.

BearFlix.
A crippled version of BearShare that limits users to images and short videos only. It still
works on gnutella but the abilities to search and download are too badly crippled for it to
be useful at all

"Cracked" BearShare Pro:
At best, not worth your time because the beta listed above gives you better control and
the download maximums are the same or better. At worst, one of the cracked versions
was improperly packaged with an old freepeers.ini file with the GUID
69D4F5C2D934FBEC6FC6CB06BDD32D29. Having a non-unique GUID breaks push
downloads, causing what amounts to a DDOS against anybody with the defective software
who happen to be firewalled and also against anybody who tries to download any file
hosted by them. All firewalled users with this GUID are being blocked from the network in
the Fullsize Hostiles List and the gnutella templist hosted by Bluetack. If you were
wondering why your cracked Pro was performing so badly even as at kept your bandwidth
maxed out all the time, now you know.

Lord of the Rings February 27th, 2006 07:05 AM

To obtain the BearShare 5.1 Beta, clear instructions & fresh connection cache (which you will need) and upgraded settings, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/host-c...bearshare.html (click on blue link to the left). This version (upgraded by File_Girl) is more updated than the one in the first post above. This version should connect immediately. And should not have any problems with the clock such as the BearStart version can cause.

Any version of BearShare after 5.2 is fake and does not even run on the Gnutella network, but a semi-commercial network with low quality DRM infested files instead.

On August 17, 2006, MusicLab released BearShare v6, a new application unrelated to the original, which does not use the Gnutella protocol at all, but instead operates on the same network as the iMesh client. In August 2006, MusicLab released another version optimized for video download called BearFlix. The first release was version 1.2.1. On October 27, 2008, Bearshare v7 with iPod support was released.

Three variations of the original BearShare gnutella servent were distributed by Free Peers: Free, Lite and Pro. The Free version had higher performance limits than the Lite version but contained some adware. The Lite version was adware-free but had lower performance limits than the Free version. The Pro version had higher limits than both the Free and Lite versions but cost US$24. Version numbers in this series ranged from 1.0 to 5.2.5.9.

A variant of the original BearShare gnutella servent, called BearFlix, is altered to limit sharing, searches and downloads to images and videos which are limited in length and duration. Though its version numbers appear to start from 1.1.2.1 in the user interface it presents itself on the gnutella network as versions 6.1.2.1 and up. It is offered in Basic and Pro (US$19) versions with similar variations in performance limits as the corresponding BearShare versions, Lite and Pro. There is no Free (adware-supported) version in the BearFlix series.

MusicLab's BearShare v6 and later offer paid music downloads in the DRMed WMA format as well as free content in various formats, mostly MP3. It also includes social networking features, somewhat similar to MySpace. The free content is shared by users and is automatically verified by BearShare not to infringe. This verification is done using acoustic fingerprinting. Also, video files more than 50mb in size and 15 minutes in length cannot be shared, guaranteeing feature-length releases cannot be transferred across the network. No other content than music and video files can be shared, which excludes executable files and zip archives amongst others.

A typical example about Vinnie, the developer: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/open-d...bearshare.html. He sold out to the $RIAA money & coded in special controller code within BearShare 5.2.

For some reason the description of the BS forums reminds me of the Handbrake forum. I saw identical activity there. It's a sorry tale to read through all the edited and arrogant reply posts there. I wouldn't be game to post there. lol

doomey April 4th, 2006 09:29 AM

where can I get an older version of bear share? (please)

Ahmadabuleil April 4th, 2006 11:40 AM

thats what happened to me thats th reason i downloaded limewire...but im having connection problems

Lord of the Rings April 4th, 2006 11:46 AM

I don't know if this link is any good http://download.bearshare.com/

But personally I'd go for BearShare Lite
http://www.filehippo.com/download_bearshare_lite/

Make sure your firewalls are properly configured! Also your modem/router since most high speed modems have NAT firewalls! Make sure you enable UPnP or else manual port forward from here http://portforward.com/routers.htm

MidnightAngel July 11th, 2006 05:57 PM

Well I just tried installing bearshare lite, but it says that it is not a valid win32 application. Is there a way around this or I just cant use it?

AaronWalkhouse July 11th, 2006 09:02 PM

The file you downloaded was probably damaged. Try the two programs in the post at the top of this thread.

MidnightAngel July 12th, 2006 12:14 AM

thats the one I tried

AaronWalkhouse July 12th, 2006 12:29 AM

Are you sure you tried "BSTEST05010b25.exe" and not "BSLITEINSTALL.exe"?
I just tried and it's good. Try downloading it again.

MidnightAngel July 12th, 2006 01:29 AM

Well I tried downloading it one more time. First one I tried was from the top post (AaronWalkhouse) and it didnt work, so I tried the next one (in Lord of the Rings post) and it worked great. Im not sure if there is a difference between them tho, but somebody else might be able to tell. It was the "BSLITEINSTALL.exe" one that worked for me. Is there a difference? I hope I just didnt get a dodgy one.....

But thank you for helping me.

Im so happy to have BearShare back, without all the "extras"

~Sonya~ July 12th, 2006 01:36 PM

I have pro and it said not to download it if you have pro, it automatically downloaded an update the other day (5.2.2) and since then the only thing that will download is music.

MidnightAngel July 13th, 2006 11:52 PM

I wish bearshare didnt do an update.

Mine seems to be going ok now.

~Sonya~
I would help you if I could, but I dont have pro.

AaronWalkhouse July 14th, 2006 12:52 AM

I heard that imesh went the same way at the end. It stopped downloading
video files unless they were very small. It wouldn't surprise me if they made
the same fatal error with BearShare.

If you have pro and install any other version it will still recognize your license,
regardless of what the company may say. The beta will still have better
performance than Pro too.

~Sonya~ July 14th, 2006 07:53 AM

I just uninstalled the pro and redownloaded an earlier version, so now it works fine.

AaronWalkhouse July 22nd, 2006 01:31 PM

They left out the adware. There was no point in rewriting the first page of the installer too.

JD29 July 30th, 2006 06:24 PM

Question for Aaron

i have downloaded the bearstart and the older version you have posted - do i remove the newer version of bearshare, install the expired version and open it with bear start?? i am going to try that - let me know if that is right, thanks, jd

AaronWalkhouse July 30th, 2006 06:27 PM

Just install B25 right over top of the existing version and your settings and
layouts will be preserved. The next time you start it (with BearStart) it will be
as if nothing had changed.

JD29 July 30th, 2006 06:42 PM

Thanks - i got it working

appreciate the quick response - did i understand correctly there is no adware on this version?

AaronWalkhouse July 30th, 2006 07:40 PM

Right. None.

There might be an occasional Fastclick popup ad caused by an embedded
webpage but you can easily prevent that by putting "www.bearshare.com" into
the Restricted Sites Zone with your Internet Settings control panel applet.

galadriel August 2nd, 2006 11:39 AM

but do you remove zango from your computer? i deletled old bearshare but still get little zango things popping up

AaronWalkhouse August 2nd, 2006 12:17 PM

Any spyware killer should be able to handle it, but I think the thing comes with
it's own uninstaller too. Give that a try.

galadriel August 2nd, 2006 12:53 PM

okay thanks i fixed it :)

Tamia August 5th, 2006 12:58 PM

Right, i'm a BearShare Pro user and i'm using BearShare Pro 5.0.1, i could update to 5.2 but i don't want to, is there a way i can get the latest 5.1 release anywhere for pro please?
They keep bugging me to update to 5.2 even though i have updates switched off!!!!! bi*ches!!

I don't understand. If 5.2.0.6 is the first version to feature crippled downloads, then wouldn't 5.2.0.5 be the best version to get? Is there something wrong with 5.2.0.5?

canadaXD August 8th, 2006 02:22 AM

5.1 light from filehippo is legit right? or how high can i go before i get a bad one>

I would love to know that too, any of the files from there. I want to revert back to 5.2.2 BS lite, I dont trust that "bearflix" thing that keeps poppin up.

canadaXD August 13th, 2006 06:22 PM

So ... anyone gonna answer my question fast? I want my BS back... XD

garbagefan2 August 13th, 2006 07:52 PM

Yeah the ones from file hippo are ligitimate.

Any 5.2 version does constantly nag you to upgrade and you can't stop it from
downloading and sharing the latest version. Also, since they never went
through beta testing it is quite likely those low-numbered versions were not up
to the usual level of quality.

betterof2evils85 August 14th, 2006 10:38 AM

i have a question, since i upgraded to the new version of bearshare pro i am having problems downloading movie files, i search for the movie, get hundreds of results with loads of sources and when i try to download them the size doesnt match - eg, on the search page it is 730mb and then on the downloads everyone will turn to 700 or 698 and they just dont download. is this a problem everyone has and will getting the earlier version with bearshare solve this? i have uninstalled and reinstalled and that didnt help - i also have exactly the same problem on that new bearflix program - which if anyone is thinking of ownloading - dont. its full of bugs. i have mailed bearshare pro support 3 times but been ignored.

AaronWalkhouse August 14th, 2006 11:08 PM

Sounds like you were trying to download some of the fakes. Before downloading,
right-click each likely candidate and use the Bitzi option. Sooner or later you
will find the real one.

Don't be surprised if the real thing looks like it has only 10 or 20 sources in the
search. Once you start downloading, BearShare automatically finds many more.

betterof2evils85 August 14th, 2006 11:17 PM

yeah thats how it used to be every odd file wouldnt work, but since i got the new bs it is EVERY file for certain films. and what does download is always a different size to the one i tried to get and always low quality cam

Kerolf August 21st, 2006 10:26 PM

AW

I downloaded the programs just as you suggested and they work just fine. I'm downloading some songs even as we speak. I did go back and try to download the same songs on the Pro Ver but they all just sit there in waiting, offline, and in bla bla mode.

What a rip off!

Thanks for the great workaround.

Now, can I rid the PC of Bearshare Pro-crastinate?

MidnightAngel October 6th, 2006 07:03 AM

Hi,
Im back with another problem.... I installed BearShare Lite awhile ago now (5.2.1) In the last month it has started to run slow, it takes forever to search anything, then to dl is just as bad. My internet connection is fine, I have adsl and everything else is doing as it should, just not BS.

My questions are -
- am I using the right version of BS Lite?
- Should I use another p2p and just forget bout BS? :( if so, which one? (I hate LW)

Sorry to be a pain. Wish BS hadnt of added that stupid zango **** and I wouldnt be here asking questions that must drive you all crazy.

foolofthehill October 6th, 2006 07:27 AM

My personal opinion, if you don't want to use the BS that Aaron mentioned in his post with the BS Starter and you don't like LW, then Phex might be interesting for you.
Phex
:Smilywais:

MidnightAngel October 6th, 2006 08:05 AM

Does Phex have any adware?

Also, can it do what BS does with dl, where you can actually expand the users your dl off and start certain ones off? Hope you get what I mean.....

foolofthehill October 6th, 2006 08:26 AM

Phex doesn't have any adware or whatsoever. It's a clean free good program.
And for the rest, just read through the Phex forum section here and then you will find the answers as well as you can ask the developers of the Phex clients, who are also the Mods in that forum section......
:Smilywais:

Lord of the Rings October 6th, 2006 08:39 AM

I have a suspicion this person didn't actually try the version of BearShare recommended by AaronWalkhouse. But Phex is a good program too.

garbagefan2 October 6th, 2006 05:40 PM

If you don't like that either you can try shareaza. I never tried it but I think it's adware free. Or you can download bit torrent.

MidnightAngel October 7th, 2006 05:42 AM

foolofthehill - Thanks. I went and checked out their site last night, seems all good. But just wanted to check, cause I have been told one thing by a company and they turned around and did another.

garbagefan2 - I tried shareaza awhile ago now. But the last time I used it it wasnt very good, I guess they may have updated since then. I might check them out also. Thanks

Sorry if I appear to have a bit a problem with your attitude; I completely agree with LOTR........you have only mentioned BS lite, but the version that Aaron reckoned (I have installed it by myself), works just as good as the other old BS versions before they sold out their company to the RIAA.....

That's the version mentioned:
Code:

If upgrade dialogs are a bother try
the expired beta 5.1.0b25 and use the BearStart utility to run it.

Besides, LOTR still gave you a qualified comment in regard to your query.
Being respectful to members, VMs, Mods, and Admins in a forum is not an option, it is a requirement.....
Bear this in mind for any further comments of yours......
:Smilywais:

MidnightAngel October 7th, 2006 06:11 AM

What about members, VMs, Mods, and Admins all being respectful back, I found that offensive the way he put it, he has no idea what I have done or havent. I didnt intend to be disrespectful. But of course it never matters what my opinion is. I will find some help somewhere else. Good luck to you all

foolofthehill October 7th, 2006 06:13 AM

You're welcome.....
