Dear LimeWire users,
I'm sorry that the fix I proscribed isn't working 100% of the time. We have released a beta that tries to address the issue. You can read more about it here:

Thanks!

Connection problems

When I try to connect the red light flashes green then red. I have upgraded and paid for Pro but it will not connect, I already deleted pref. folder did not work. How do I change the preference to manually connect when I uncheck the box it resets back to connect at startup. How do you make the uncheck apply?

Blackbird December 21st, 2003 08:16 PM

Click apply when you make the change.

Connection problems

There is not an apply button to click on???? that is why I can not make it stay unchecked???

Not working

I'm using Limewire with an OSX but could not connect at no time. I tought I'm having problems because at the moment I'm with a dial-up connection (in couple of days I should have ADSL)! I quit Limewire removed the document from the preferences and restarted, but still a negative response. I would love to work with Limewire, cause it seems to be what I've been looking for for quiet a while now. Please help me, it would be much appreciated.
NB: Would there be the same problem if I turned to Limewire Pro?

Blackbird December 26th, 2003 06:56 PM

Are you firewalled?

If so, open up port 6346.

Edenn Rayne December 28th, 2003 10:59 AM

Uhhh, none of this worked.

First, the "delete-the-pref-folder" advice did nothing for me.

Steps:

1) Launch Limewire. See the new "Tips" dialog box? DISABLE the show-tips-at-launch checkbox. Then click "ok" and hope you never see that box again.

2) Go to LimeWire Preferences and disable the auto-connect at launch option.

3) Quit Limewire. Then relaunch Limewire. Then manually "connect" from the menu. Voila!

I surmise that the new Tips box is interfering with the application's ability to connect!

Ohhh my gawd - thank you - that was the whole damm prob - the freaking tips lmao

There's got to be a better way than unplugging the thing!

Can't connect

I'm running Windows XP and have read through this entire thread. I have deleted the .limewire folder. This did not work. I have disabled the tips to no avail. Nothing has helped. At the moment I have automatic connection disabled, run limewire at boot up disabled. When I click on file>connect and the red button flashes green and then goes back to red. I can sometimes see a whole list of pending connections under the connections tab but they all appear to time out. Any other ideas? Should I take a look at the beta? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

duhitsmichael January 1st, 2004 10:20 PM

Bah humbug

I have tried everything suggested on this thread, and none of it works. I had limewire a while ago and got rd of it, now I have it again. It doesn't work. By the way my problem is when i try to connect the green light flashes for like 0.373 ths of a second then it turns back to red. My os is Windows XP.

trap_jaw4 January 2nd, 2004 02:06 AM

Do other p2p programs work on your computer? e.g. BearShare, Shareaza or eMule?

If not, you can probably blame it on your ISP.

Flamelord January 2nd, 2004 04:33 PM

p2p programs

I use Kazaalite and it works ok all be it slowly. Does that count as a p2p program. I've never tried any of the others that you mentioned.

trap_jaw4 January 2nd, 2004 05:02 PM

Yep, it does. It may be LimeWire's fault but I can't tell you what's happening. Unless your ISP (or your router, firewall, whatever) specifically blocks the standard gnutella ports you should always be able to connect to some ultrapeers...

craigosh January 3rd, 2004 09:58 AM

Worked for me

Ive got windows XP Pro and have been having this problem on and off for ages, this fix worked for me immediately and it might be my imagination but it also seems to download faster.

ravinman64 January 3rd, 2004 06:50 PM

I think I may have a clue to the problim I am using limewire beta 3.7.3 on windows ME I was having a problem with my connection it was on then off then on till I went in to options then to speed and disabled the ultrapeers and I have no problem now:) :D ;)

mcmatt January 4th, 2004 04:45 PM

I just downloaded and installed limewire on my computer over 10 times and it won't connect...the red dot in the bottom left corner goes green for 2 seconds then goes back to red. I have used limewire on my friends computer and it works awesome but won't work at all on mine with windows xp home. I would definitely get limewire pro, but not if I can't even get basic to connect... think I'll stick with kazaa and forget about this bullshit.

trap_jaw4 January 4th, 2004 05:02 PM

If you are using Windows, try another gnutella client, - BearShare, http://www.bearshare.com should work. - And if it doesn't try another p2p client. There dozens of them. For a list go to www.zeropaid.com

trouble starting LW?

I was having trouble starting LW also, sometimes I could connect and other times it would take days. I tried the delete directory too and that didn't seem to work, tried it several times with disabling tips and auto start....finally I just reinstalled the entire thing and clicked repair on the install wizard, then tried starting it again after deleting the directory and task bar, and it worked. I gues it's trial and error but the reinstall might work for you too!:D :D :D

Amanshoe January 7th, 2004 06:47 AM

I have the same problem with my computer connecting on a 56k modem. The high speed/bandwith conection runs fine. The computer with the 56k modem will not "search" if I have two or more downloads going at once (the light turns red but downloads keep downloading). Can anyone confirm this? Is everyone having this problem using a 56k modem?

firekracker January 7th, 2004 10:40 AM

I am also using 56K modem, while I can attempt to download more than 3 songs and still be able to search, the cownloads do not "take", I continuously get "need more sources" on all downloads after the first connection, so I go the slow way and do it one at a time.......cable modem hurry !! HAHA:(
At least now I can connect......

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I DOWNLOADED LW BASIC YESTERDAY AND SINCE THE I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING, ALL THE IDEAS POSTED ON THIS THREAD. NOTHING WORKS.
I AM WORKING ON A G4 USING MAC OS X. ALL I GET IS THE RED LIGHT AND A SPLIT SECOND OF GREEN. IF ANYBODY HAS ANY FRESH SOLUTIONS PLEASE POST THEM TO tyilo@mailbox.co.za :o  :(

bearwacket January 9th, 2004 11:13 PM

Yeah!

Thanks so much, Susheel! It finally works. I'm in XP Home, and I found and deleted the .limewire file, and it didn't work at first, until I exited from the icon in the tray in the bottom right corner. Then I started back up, and the light went green for the first time in weeks!

Thanks for listening to us!

firekracker January 10th, 2004 02:15 PM

I think the key is to make sure you remove the icon in the task panel on the lower right corner, as you delete the other stuff. Now I do not have any problems starting LW, it initializes perfectly upon startup. Cool!:D ;) :p

lowe January 16th, 2004 02:36 PM

Im having a slightly different problem, my aol freezes after 30 mins of having limewire running(and yes it is limewire) does anyone have any good tips on how to fix this.

Fix for inability to connect

The Fix from Limewire did not fix my problem with not being able to connect - my operating system is Windows XP --- I hope this gets corrected soon.

nrthilrose61109 January 19th, 2004 10:43 AM

reinstalling LW

If you reinstall do you have to pay the fee again?

expresso166 January 20th, 2004 03:24 PM

I lOve you!!!

That was a whole lot easier than downloading another version (my third in a week). And since i didn't really have any preferences to begin with, I don't have anything to worry about. Thank you!

no.

Fixed it

I am running XP Pro and my I used the uncheck "run at start up" method and that worked. I had tried before, but it didn't work because I never pressed the apply button after unchecking it. This may be other people's problem also.

someone January 21st, 2004 08:43 PM

i have osX. just upgraded to 10.3. im also behind a school network, but never had any problems before. upgraded limewire and now it wont work. same problem as stated above. ideas?

Connection Failure

This worked the first time I did it, but now doesnt work at all I have tried 6 times now. What else can be done???

trap_jaw4 January 23rd, 2004 06:48 AM

What doesn't work and what exactly did you do?

Jwyss January 24th, 2004 12:42 AM

RE: Trap_jaw

I was getting the 'disconnected error' so many are reporting, and I deleted the .limewire folder, and it worked at first. Then the next time I logged on, I had the same problem, and deleting .limewire folder didn't work. BUT I saw another post where it was suggested to exit the Limewire running on my startup toolbar, and that seems to be working, except I am having to do that each time I start it up as well as deleting the .limewire folder. So of course, I am losing my preferences etc each time, but at least I am able to access files again....

sberlin January 24th, 2004 01:26 AM

Hi Jwyss,

Please try using the LimeWire 3.7.9 beta, available from the 'beta' link on the download page. It should let you connect without having to go through all those steps.

For those who are having trouble connection to the Gnutella network using LimeWire, we have a potential fix. You need to delete your WHOLE LimeWire preferences directory. The directory can be found in the following locations:
(etcetera...)

Thanks for this think-ahead post for those of us who felt we probably screwed up by not first uninstalling the old non-subscriber's version before installing the newly purchased, newly installed LimeWire Pro version then probably was going to only further (i.e, really) screw up the issue by uninstalling the newly purchased, newly installed LimeWire Pro version to start all over but then probably wouldn't have been able to provide LimeWire the proper certification number or registration number or whatever it is that LimeWire would have required in order to reinstall the newly purchased, incorrectly uninstalled LimeWire Pro version blah blah blah...(on and on and on...)

You get the idea. Thanks for the helpful info.

Reece January 26th, 2004 02:11 AM

Hi all, I had the same problem the light would go green for a few seconds then back to red, could sit all day pressing connect to no avail. I deleted .limewire directory, tips, disable auto start, etc etc and would fix for 1 day or not at all! After talking to others using the gnutella network with other programs like bearshare, it seems they have similar problems and they advised that I fire up Limewire as soon as I go online (first thing after dial-up), and this worked, If I surf the web, download etc first the run Limewire it fails to go green! So I disconnected, reset computer then went online then ran Limewire first and away it went! Maybe worth a try, it certainly seems to work for me.

Impossible connection

I'm on Mac OSX

Tried the posted 'fix' and it was no good whatsoever!

The strange thing is that despite having a bar which reads (Disconnected/no files available) I seem to be still downloading stuff.

I have found that on a couple of occassions a 'Force Quit' (how else will Limewire quit anyway, it refuses to obey commands to quit) will result in LW connecting, at least for a while, on restarting the program. Of course you have to go through the whole startup process again each time, but SLOWLY you can gather your download. As I have not managed to actually COMPLETE any download yet, I don't know if it will work?

I bought Pro because I assumed it actually worked. The basic was not working, but like a fool I presumed that was to get you to buy Pro, which I assumed would work.

Now I imagine that UNLESS you guys get this fixed, there will be NO POINT of anyone downloading even the FREE LW, because frankly a program that will not connect to the web is actually NOT ANY GOOD.

Does Limewire actually intend to fix this BLATANT ERROR - or at least WARN potential buyers that it is a lottery whether the program works or not?

I need a FIX NOW - if that cannot happen, then I suggest we all warn all those on our Address Books and Lists we belong to NOT TO BUY LIMEWIRE.

Any human Limewire employees out there reading this, do your company a favour and reply to me.
