No more connection

I'm a student, have been using various versions of LW for a while and just got PRO. Until now I've never had a problem, have been using it here at school for about a week or so. Immediately after downloading the latest PRO version, my network connection goes down for a while. When it comes back up I can eventually use all of my messenger programs and everything else, but I can't connect to LW for even a second. I don't know if PRO is more offensive to things that search for bandwith sucking people on a network than Basic, or if I'm just really, really unlucky. Not that I even get a reliable download all the time which is why I finally got PRO because I thought it might help me avoid all the AS and NmS messages. I tried the quick pref fix and it didn't work like I figured it wouldn't. Is there ANY way for me to maybe mask to the network which ports I'm sending from that would prevent them from blocking certain actions since I'm sure that's what it is. I've had my network dropped randomly other times but once it came back there were no ill effects, not like this. I'm kind of pissed that once I finally pay for the program it ceases to be of any use to me...

G4 Ti Powerbook
Mac OSX 10.2.8
LW 4.0.8
1Ghz
1Gig Ram
384k DSL(?)
and stuff

Help. Or lemme know if I'm just SOL.

correction

Just downloaded the LW 4.1.5 beta version. Nothing changed. Except that it doesn't recognize me as being a PRO registered user... But since it doesn't work that's less of an issue at the moment.

cristina2806 September 5th, 2004 09:36 AM

This is what worked for me:
Close Limewire and exit the program by right clicking on the icon in the icon tray then restart the application from your desktop.
This seemed to connect me straight away without having to delete any files. By the way I am a Windows XP user.

You can get the Pro beta from the link on the bottom of your Pro page.

However, sounds like you're SOL at your school. :( You could try using a high numbered port (like 23456 or something else instead of the default 6346), but the best answer would be to ask around to see if your school allows p2p apps.

WORKS!

I just did it on XP works now!

limeyblimey September 7th, 2004 04:29 AM

I had a NO CONNECTION problem after installing stupid MS Win XP sp2 like thousands of people who use that stupid MS Win XP. But it is now fixed. I hope it will work for all those people out there who cannot connect.

Here is what happened:

When I could not connect, I was DESPERATE! I downloaded the LW 4.0.8 thinking I need an update. I was using LW 4.0.7. I got rid of the Win firewall as per forum advice. That didn't work. Then I read that I should download the java update, which I did, but that didn't work. Finally, I figured I installed the wrong Java version, so I uninstalled all the JAVA versions in my system (I ended up with 3 versions) using the Windows Uninstall prog. I finally reinstalled Java version 1.4.2_05.

Then, it didn't work, so I uninstalled LW 4.0.8, and reinstalled LW 4.0.7.

Hey Presto - it worked.... Finally.

It takes a while to connect, but it does it, and now my connection is EXCELLENT. I must say that I followed all the advice in the forum, including removing the firewall, change the LW option NOT TO CONNECT on startup so I have manual start everything.

xpsp2

Is anyone having trouble connecting after Micro$softs XP service pack 2 is installed?

I have tried the delete directory/manual connect etc etc and it still doesn't work (making sure of course that the app is closed and out of the systray)

Even though I have unchecked start on system startup in two locations (connection and advanced) it still tries to connect on launch.

???????

I've got enough to do without fooling around with this application...starting to seem like a waste of $35. BTW - using basic, not pro.

patch update 4 xpsp2

A no. of people have reported probs with xp sp2. Quote: Microsoft admits that as many as one application in 10 will experience problems due to the upgrade.

Microsoft have apparently already released a patch for sp2. see: http://blog.ziffdavis.com/seltzer/ar...8/17/1737.aspx I don't know if this will solve your issue, but it might help.

I can't figure out why I can't connect. I have done the firewall thing, I deleted that file, etc, I am with a school network service, is there anything I can do for it to allow me to use Limewire? Please help.

connection

It didn't work Windows XP

coco latte September 15th, 2004 10:44 PM

it worked

deleting the pref file worked! but i'm not sure how long this is gonna last. i followed the "connection problem" link on LW and changed the firewalls settings for gnutella network and that worked for that one time too. and after that, it just wont connect again till i tried this method. i'm just worried that this problem might recur. i don't want to be deleting my pref file everytime i want to connect. another prob would be files that were incomplete wont be able to continue downloading if i were to turn on LW the next time.

valfran September 16th, 2004 04:38 AM

I follow LW "connection problems" but still no luck.

Suzanne Knight September 16th, 2004 04:28 PM

Connection Problem

Unfortunately....... it appears that the connection problems in truth, DO NOT lay with the user...... but with a problem within Limewire.

Lo and behold, an error message came up today about a BUG.
the first one I've seen since this problem started.

I've had limewire for quite a while and until this past week it worked just fine.

Now, It tells me I'm not connected to the internet ..... Wrong... I'm connected 24/7. Then I go from disconnected to connecting.. to turbo.... then steadily down. Even reloading the program several times does not help, nor did reinstalling it.

I must caution the NOVICE.... Tweeks and messing with certain aspects of your security sytsems may not only cause you more problems , but also open the door to invasion.

We can either put up with the irritation of the program not working properly, or just wait until someone from Gnutella takes the time to really look into this situation.

And yes... it worked just fine after the Win XP service pk 2 was installed and tweeked.

ursula September 17th, 2004 10:37 AM

uh...

Windoze XP SP2 does ALL manner of naughty self-indulgent and self-important things upon installing it...

Firewall settings, Outlook Express security options, blah blah blah...

Install it if you feel that you must, but
BUT
be sure to check all of your previous configurations...

MANY changes are made to default settings and there is no adequate warning to the user that such changes are being made.

10s and 10s of 1,000s of businesses have been badly bent by this crap from M$ as, at the least, they were unable to deal with email attachments until Outlook Express options were manually reset to 'workable' parameters...

On more than 10 of the machines I tend in a rather wide-spread flock, 3rd party internet security and firewall and antivirus software was disabled by installing XP SP2.
Nice, hmmm ?

btw... who Suzanne Knight ?

firewall problems

I just downloaded limewire four days ago and have never been able to connect. I cannot connect to any other download program either. It says that I have a firewall problem. I have tried to put limewire on the exceptions list for firewalls and I put the port UDP and TCP 6346 port on there also as an exception. I am running the new service pack from microsoft and windows xp. I always get a message that a firewall is blocking my access. What else am I supposed to do? I really want this program to work.
PLEASE HELP!

follow directions

If you are having trouble connecting, Follow the Directions to the letter and you will connect I was having trouble for a while, played with every port that they say and no connection. found this little fix to remove that folder and B I N G O connection. but make sure you are exactly where it says. Thanks so much for this fix

Ranana September 19th, 2004 03:26 PM

>>If you are having trouble connecting, Follow the Directions to the letter<<

Follow what directions??? I see no directions, and if I do, its all about xp, which I don't have. I have ME, but I'm sure its not much different. And for the love of God, where do I go to disable the firewall? I have no idea why I can't get connected and it's very frustrating. I have the newest Java because I just downloaded it yesterday.

Lord of the Rings September 19th, 2004 04:51 PM

Ranana I have no idea whether this will lead to some hints (I'm a mac person sorry), but I've a few links related to Win ME: Link 1 , & Link 2 , & Link 3 , & lastly Link 4. This is obviously not my area, but there might be some points there. There's also a forum/2 you can post about such things specific to Win ME. Just a thought. But then, does win me have its own firewall? I suspect it's the firewall brand/router brand that you might need to be having a look at. See pointers about this at bottom of the following page http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml or search the forum for firewall/router.

InFlamesFan September 20th, 2004 02:57 PM

Ok, so i have windows xp. And i downloaded LimeWire yesterday and it was fine and i downloaded alot of songs. But today when i wanted to download more songs... it said i was "disconnected" and it told me to go to file and click "connect" well i've done that like a billion times and its not working. HELP!!

Lord of the Rings September 20th, 2004 03:06 PM

how did you try to continue the dwnlds? If you used the Resume button, it 'will' have a draining effect upon your connection energy if there's many of them. It's best to re-search manually for the sources as 1st choice.

I downloaded Limewire last night and I still haven't been able to connect all day/night. :( I have tried the suggestions on here and so far nothing has worked...I have Windows Xp (Home Edition). Please, help me!

I've been using limewire for almost a year, and I haven't had any problems until a few days ago. I simply cannot connect!! I have a MAC OSX with Limewire version 4.0.8. I open the program and it just has the status of "connecting" but never connects. I've never had any trouble before this just happened all of a sudden. Firewalls and all prefs are the same as they have always been when I was able to connect before. Please help!!

Steps:

1) Launch Limewire. See the new "Tips" dialog box? DISABLE the show-tips-at-launch checkbox. Then click "ok" and hope you never see that box again.

2) Go to LimeWire Preferences and disable the auto-connect at launch option.

3) Quit Limewire. Then relaunch Limewire. Then manually "connect" from the menu. Voila!

I surmise that the new Tips box is interfering with the application's ability to connect!

Limewacko

I tried to do as suggested and can't get it to work. How do can I find the Preferences and disable the auto-connect at lauch option? I can't seem to find it.

Lord of the Rings September 21st, 2004 03:12 PM

Gedy the option is under Tools-Options & connections & untick the Connect on Startup option box (osx: that's LW prefs & connections.) This does tend to depend upon yur type of connection. Dial-up users this obviously doesn't apply (or shouldn't.)

MusicChick September 21st, 2004 05:24 PM

I still can't connect...I have cable internet. :( I wish Limewire would work!

Lord of the Rings September 21st, 2004 05:29 PM

Gedy September 21st, 2004 08:29 PM

YEAY I connected! :D Now, it says that I have a poor connection! Why would this be? Out of the 5 bars I have 2 working.

Lord of the Rings September 21st, 2004 08:41 PM

It could potentially be for numerous reasons. Forcing resume is one reason. This function cuses LW to continually do searches every few mins for those files selected. If it's many of them then it'll drain the energy out of yur connecton quality thus if u have less than 2 or 3 green bars you won't be able to do a search. That's the side effect of resuming files! You sacrifice conneciton quality for forced dwnlds. I only do it as a last resort! Here's some hinst about search & dwnld techniques.

MusicChick September 22nd, 2004 01:49 AM

I have service pack 2 updated...I tried the beta version and still can't connect...Totally Sucks!

murasame September 22nd, 2004 04:44 AM

Gedy, just be happy you connected. The fact that it is in Poor status is probably a minor thing. Sometimes you just have to wait before LW establishes a more stable connection to the Gnutella net.
(As a side note, upgrading to Pro, I saw a status had almost forgotten about: "Turbocharged". Huh. And it has stayed like that ever since I upgraded. That is, since yesterday...)

Gedy September 22nd, 2004 07:37 AM

THank you all for your help! I truly appreciate it! You have been great! :D

unable to connect behind school firewall

I'd like to send out a plea from all those whose problems with connecting to limewire are probably, i feel, due to university ofr other shcool firewalls. I'm not an expert, its just that I've tried every other possible fix and nothing is working. I've added gnutella to firewall acceptances, i've deleted the .limewire folder. it just won't connect. I'm using Windows XP. Obviously I'm bummed cuz i know how good limewire is and i was psyched about finally using limewire pro. anyways, to all the brilliant software engineers: From what I've said, do you think I'm right that the school is blocking access to gnutella networks? Is there anything we can do to circumvent the university firewall, assuming that is the problem? Let us all know, it would be so great to have this working.

Cheers,
Ross

P.S. - I don't like Kazaa, but i dl'd it just to see if it would work. it doesn't. of course, IE and AIM do. does this add up?

helbigtw September 22nd, 2004 02:11 PM

Yes I completely agree. I paid for PRO, and of course they give no refunds, and it wont work. There is a way to bypass the university port blocks, there's gotta be a way. In my town (JMU Harrisonburg) we have a company called NTC who we pay for internet service, but somehow its registered on the JMU network. An IT guy at JMU said that JMU is specifically blocking ports to prevent limewire from running so that the bandwidth is freed up at the school. Well legally, can they do that? I mean, I pay for ethernet, my checks are made out to 'NTC' not JMU. So, if I am paying for ethernet, am I not paying for my own allocated space? if I cant use the space that I pay for, shouldn't they give me money back? Tell us how we can get around this Hitler style domination, and how can it be legal for them to block what we pay for?

murasame September 22nd, 2004 03:21 PM

Hellbigtw, before signing the contract you have to read everything. Make sure that it wasn't written in the contract first, 'cause if it is then there's nothing you can do aside from changing ISPs.

rmycanes1L, I have no idea if there is a way to do that or not, but I must tell you that this is not a hacker forum. If you wanna be a hacker or wanna use hacker stuff to circumvent the rules set by the university then post somewhere else please.

Firewalls

Still having firewall trouble...what is going on? Will someone please help me? I am a college student too but my roommates program works. I did everything I was told to do so far but still get the message that a firewall is blocking my connection. PLEASE HELP!

Noelle

helbigtw September 23rd, 2004 08:57 AM

Noelle, I speak on behalf of alot of college students that have become aware of the fact that universities are blocking ports, making Limewire inaccessible. My roomates Limewire works, its just a mystery, for some reason, my school allows his puter to connect. There is nothing you can do to connect until Limewire gives us a way of using their LEGAL program on the bandwidth that WE PAY FOR (at least i pay for mine, and did not sign any contract, I pay for service, which is being blocked so that they can have more room for other people). And this is not "hacking" as some have referenced. Limewire is legal is it not? I pay for ethernet service, checks payable not to my university, but to the provider. Therefore Legal program + I pay for my ethernet to a company, and a third party is blocking my access, I think I have a right to find out how to circumnavigate the troublesome 3rd party.

Lord of the Rings September 23rd, 2004 09:22 AM

shelbee how did you get it to work? There's lots of people dying to know how to do it. But then it still might not work for everybody.

If some of you know somebody who has got it to work, why not ask them if they can set yours up the identical way, else, ask them for a copy of their preferences files. Buy them a coke in return.

helbigtw September 23rd, 2004 12:28 PM

Oh and also, I think that most people on this forum who can't connect are at universities, and are simply having their ports blocked...so its probly not any little things like turning "start when windows starts" off or anything like that. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO UNTIL LIMEWIRE FIGURES OUT HOW TO LET US CIRCUMNAVIGATE THE 3RD PARTY BLOCKER.

MusicChick September 23rd, 2004 02:23 PM

I "GIVE" up using Limewire...I have never had a problem before and I use some Zonealarm and have Limewire on "allow". I have tired everything and the beta version and still can't connect. I wonder if it has to do with service pack 2.

Norm September 23rd, 2004 02:41 PM

MusicChick,

Service pack 2 beefs up XP's internet security and doesn't always do what you want it to. Turning it off doesn't always work. It can be a real problem.

Go to your network connections, properties, right click your connection, then select advanced, settings, go to the exceptions tab and remove "Limewire - The Best Sharing Program", add - limewire.exe manually.

Good luck,

Norm

helbigtw September 23rd, 2004 05:25 PM

FYI: Limewire worked great at my old apartment. My new apartment doesnt let it work, I had the same settings as when I moved of my old apartment. I tried service pack 1, service pack 2, zone alarm, windows firewall...I tried every trick learned from posts and then some. Nothing did any good, and THIS IS THE SAME FOR MOST PEOPLE ON THIS TOPIC WHO CANT CONNECT. IT WILL NOT WORK IT WILL NOT WORK ..and i'm just trying to save you all some time by saying that the only way to get it to work is not hours of tinkering with little settings that wont change limewire. LIMEWIRE must provide the solution to go around the 3rd party. SIMPLE PERIOD. So when do we get a fix to go around the 3rd party?

Norm September 23rd, 2004 05:55 PM

helbigtw,

You need to realize that 99.9 percent of problems with Limewire are solved by correcting issues within your system. Limewire can't tell the difference from your old apartment & your new apartment. What makes you think that was Limewires fault? Think about it.

Norm
