Unconnected I am another frustrated user. Limewire is very inconsistent. At times it works great and then there are days, weeks, even months that it won't work. I always update with the newest versions. I always read the forum. I always follow the steps they say to follow and still NOTHING is working. I have deleted all preferences. I have done it all and still nothing. I wish they could leave Limewire alone when it's working and stop messing it up for us. Please let me know when it works!!! |

I dream of green! I purchased LW pro two months ago (twice - as the first one didn't work!). In that time I've managed to connect for maximum one hour. I have tried every single suggestion mentioned here with very little success. The only time I manage to connect is when I have explorer and LW open at the same time and sometimes after surfing the internet for a while and with LW open at the same time I can connect up and even then very rarely and not for long. I am running OSX 10.2.7 and am becoming very frustrated. Help anyone? |
WELL DONE! It worked for me on WINXP, thanks! |
I have OS XP and I have disabled tips at start up. worked once, then lost the connection in the middle of downloading. I do not have limewire in your_documents folder. So what now? |
I completely exited LW, even sys tray icon. Went to add/remove and completely deleted it from my system. OH, PS before I did this, I did a search all files & folders, and found NOTHING! The reason it wasn't showing up in 'your_documents', I discovered, was that when I installed it both the first and second time, I opened and ran it from it's current location, I did not save it to disk. I re-installed it and now connecting is 'flighty'. it will connect for a few minutes, then go off, then automatically comes back on within a few minutes. Even when I am not connected, I still see the downloads in progress??? Well, I'll give it a few more days and hope it works. I know the admin. and mods. are doing all they can, but... As far as purchasing the pro version, I DON'T THINK SO! I read on here where someone purchased it twice to try to correct the problem. (Boy, they saw you comming!) I'll keep my $20.00 and just go purchase a CD. Good luck! |
almost-freeze on connect Hi, I'm using MacOS 9.2.2 and tried the latest beta version of LW as well as the official latest release. The beta doesn't run at all, the official release starts up and kind of freezes. When I start up LW, it loads until it arrives at "core components". From there, is takes forever. After a while, I managed to load LW (took me 20 minutes) and turn off "conntect on startup". This prevented LW from freezing when arriving at "core components". However. as soon as I choose Connect from the file menu, it freezes again. It takes almost all CPU time and hardly allows any user input. The computer hardly responds to mouseclicks, LW doesn't respond at all. Not being able to solve the problem, I decided to install old versions of Java and LW and installed several versions that used to work perfectly in the past. They just don't work anymore! I had to reinstall LW because I had to reinstall the entire Mac for different reasons. Reading the posts here, I get the impression that those who solved their problem have no understanding of what they did. They just kept trying until LW somehow worked again. I am looking for real solutions from people who know what's going on. Even if you don't have a solution but know why it doesn't work, I'd appreciate your explanations. I believe, I have tried everything by now. Thanks, Mark |

Hi Mark, Read the "Why Does LimeWire Seem Slower?" sticky post in the Mac OS forum and follow the instructions to edit the limewire.lax file. Let me know if that has any effect. Thanks. |
almost-freeze on connect Dear Sberlin, Thanks for the advice. I followed the instructions with the same result. Although I notice that LW loads more quickly in the beginning, it still freezes when it tries to load the core components. (I apologize for the triple post. The Gnutellaforums server didn't confirm my browser's request.) Mark |
Do the files out.txt or err.txt in the LimeWire folder contain anything? (They might be called system.err or system.out too, I'm not sure of the names.) |
almost-freeze on connect When the beta version crashed, yes. The currently installed version doesn't crash but doesn't report any errors either. I simply press command-option-escape when I have to get on with my work. Mark |
Will still not connect Hi I am on mac os 10.3.2 and had thesame problem where the green connect button flashed for a short second before it disconected agan, this started about a month ago. I have tried to delete the prefrence file, disable autoconnect and running limewire as soon as i restart. None of these seem to help. I have also downloaded the new beta version. The differense is that now i get an error message saying that My machine does not appear to have an active internet connection or a firewal is blocking my connection. In System Prefrences/sharing/firewall I have opened for lime wire (port 6346) and also tried turning off my firewall compleatly. This does not seem to have an effect. I have also tried to change the port number in preferences/advanced/port&firewall to a different number, and opening to the same port number in my firewall settings on my computer. Non of the above has worked. Anyone? |
Connection problems Worked for me too |
I can't connect to limewire either. I see a lot of people are having the same trouble and it's very frustrating. I am running windows 98, and I can't get anything to work. Please give me some help. |
almost-freeze on connect solved Hello, I was working on an application of mine, which didn't want to connect to the internet. Reason: Open Transport error -3158. Fortunately, I always check for errors and quickly found the cause. It appears that particular router configurations cause this error. Probably, there are more causes of this error. After removing my router, I fired up LimeWire without a problem. Removing the router also meant changing TCP/IP settings and limiting the Mac's network interface (AppleTalk) to remote access only. This is not an apparent fix, it is a definite solution. Please, developers, make sure that LimeWire checks Open Transport availability. If it gets an error, have LW report it in an error dialog and let it exit. This will avoid a lot of frustrations. Mark |
 no such luck! |
I had been having connection problems for several days. As suggested, I deleted my limewire preference folder. After doing this, I was able to connect again. Thanks for the tip. |
thanks for the tip. if i wouldnt have looked on the forums i would still be sitting here trying to do things that have no effect on the program. thanks again. |
Tips? WinXP Prof. Del SubD worked until logoff. Now Green/Red flash. Using Pro. Me Retard, cant find "Tips". Tip of the Day? Just get an empty box with option to close... |

How nice for Limewire that all of us purchased the Pro version and now we cannot connect. I run WinXP Pro and have (like many many others) tried all the "fixes" suggested in this thread, but none have worked. As suggested in the above note, I tried to download bearshare just to prove that it's not a problem with my ISP or my computer -- and it works LIKE A CHARM. How unfortunate that we must jump ship (especially after having already paid Limewire which has a no refund policy) and now we must resort to paying for a service that actually works |
I can't get connected!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have windows xp and Limewire Pro and I have tried deleting the folder and I still can't get connected. I really would like to get this figured out since I have paid to get this service. Please let me know what else I can try to be able to use my Limewire!!!!!!!  |
Use the latest 3.8.3 download. |
I just downloaded the new 3.6.15. Is the 3.8.3 even newer? Am I going to have to download newer versions everyday? |
No, you don't have to download a new version every day. We are just in the process of upgrading our client. 3.8.3 will hopefully be the last release in the 3.8 series. |
3.6.15 was released over three months ago. 3.8.3 was released yesterday, and was the first public (non-beta) release since 3.6.15. |
Your solution seems to work for me. I downloaded beta 3.8. closed all limewire (including turning off auto-connect), and renamed .limewire.props to limewire-old.props-old. Connection ok. I shall return. Thanks |
for those who can't connect Where am I to find this place you have given me to delete. i searched the finder and it cannot find it. |
For those who can't connect Sorry, I forgot to tell you my OS. It is 10.2.8 I have searched the computer for /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire and I don't find it. Where is it located? The Finder cannot find it. Oh yes, I did put in my user name, and not "your_username". Limewire was working fine one day, and the next day I could not connect. |
Why don't you just open the Finder and try manually navigating into your Library/Preferences/LimeWire directory? Thanks! Susheel |
can't connect to limewire I tries deleting the limewire directory and I am still unable to connect. I see that it has worked for others that are using XP. Exactly what files are you deleting? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! |
connection made with XP but painful Renaming the limewire.props file to limewire-old.props consistently allows connection for me, but its annoying to do this everytime I wish to connect. Deleting or renaming .props seems an odd procedure. We are all looking formward to your permanent fix. Thanks for working on it some more. |
Re: can't connect to limewire Quote:
Be careful, the file you seek if running WINXP is as follows: C:\Documents and Settings\[your XP user account name here]\.limewire.props You must naviagte to it and rename (or delete) it to the following: C:\Documents and Settings\[your XP user account name here]\.limewire-old.props-old Do this everytime you want to run limewire, before launching it. Navigating is easier if you use the search feature of WINXP to find limewire.props |
TRIED EVERYTHING, WHERE ARE THE LIMEWIRE PREFERENCES??? Hi I recently got limewire pro, but I couldn't connect. Tried all the posts, searching finder to delete preferences, etc. But it was no where on my drive, there are no preferences at all for limewire. Is that wierd? or am I mean't to do something else, please let me know as this is very frustrating. Thanks Zac |
cant connect when on lime wire for some reason when i go to the file menu and select the connect button where quality is it keeps saying disconnect i cant connect i would really like to know if possible how or why it is that i cant get onto to this website |
Keep getting dumped I'm using OS X 10.3.2 on a G4 powermac. Sometimes I can connect and sometimes I can't. When I do, it will usually say my connection is excellent and I can run searches. But as soon as I hit the download button, my connection goes to fair, poor and none quickly. I'm running Limewire version 3.8.5 Most of the time when I start the program it won't connect until I quit and start a few times. Also, when it disconnects and I quit the program, my internet connect still says I'm still sending and receiving info, even though I have no programs open whatsoever. Then I have to shutdown to get my modem back and restart my computer only to try again. Not too impressed with Limewire. Is MacMorpheus any better?? thanks. |
connections I cannot find that file |
which file? |

I am using the same computer and software as you and i am experiencing exactly the same symptoms as you have described above. I have tried to play with the settings on the firewal that comes with Panther but it does not make a differense. I suspect that it is the ISP(Internet Service Provider) that has something that block the traffic when you start downloading. Hope we can figure this out. Have also tried other programs with no luck. |

new port Yes, I have tried changing to other ports. But i have only typed in a random number. Should i try one specific that is most likely to be open for traffic? Do you think it might be the ISP that is blocking and a alternative port will solve the disconnection problem? |
thanks that worked for me |
connection failure I have deleted preferance library and it it worked on first connection but when i go to start LW again it is the same old story! I have made sure it is set not to restatrt on connection but the same thing happens NO CONNECTION plus it disconnects my PC from the net and I have to repair this connection to even reconnect to my server! ThIS IS GETTING UGLY |
Hmm... I tried Iswipe today just to check it out. And it would connect to the napster client, but not Gnutella(limewire). Also, if I tell limewire to disconnect and it shows no hosts, and I quit the application, my Internet Connect program still shows things sending and receiving even though no programs are running. I wonder if this might be due to my slow connect - 26.4. If I select a file to download, my connect starts to crash real quick. It goes from Turbocharged down to poor in just a couple of minutes, but if I kill the download, it will work it's way back up to turbocharged. Is this a bandwidth problem? love to solve this. thanks. |

Stand By ! A comprehensive listing by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority can be found here. This is the official list. IANA is the organization that actually assigns these numbers, so this is really the place to look. But the short story is, ports 49152 to 65535 are the ones to shoot for. They're known as Dynamic or Private Ports, and are there to use freely without stepping on any ports being used by your computer for other things. Following is a list of the ports your machine might use at some time or another: Ports below 1024 are called the "Well-Known Ports", used by various system processes. You can use any port within this range that are not in use, but unless you really know your computer, you can't be sure which ones are being used by your machine at any given time. 20 FTP data (File Transfer Protocol) 21 FTP (File Transfer Protocol) 22 SSH (Secure Shell) 23 Telnet 25 SMTP (Send Mail Transfer Protocol) 43 whois 53 DNS (Domain Name Service) 68 DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) 79 Finger 80 HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) 110 POP3 (Post Office Protocol, version 3) 115 SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) 119 NNTP (Network New Transfer Protocol) 123 NTP (Network Time Protocol) 137 NetBIOS-ns 138 NetBIOS-dgm 139 NetBIOS 143 IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) 161 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) 194 IRC (Internet Relay Chat) 220 IMAP3 (Internet Message Access Protocol 3) 389 LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) 443 SSL (Secure Socket Layer) 445 SMB (NetBIOS over TCP) 666 Doom 993 SIMAP (Secure Internet Message Access Protocol) 995 SPOP (Secure Post Office Protocol) Ports between 1024 and 29151 are known as the Registered Ports. Basically, programs are supposed to register their use of these ports and thereby try to be careful and avoid stomping on each other. Here are some common ports and their programs. Same thing applies concerning ports within this range that aren't on this list -- you never know for sure which ones are being used. 1243 SubSeven (Trojan - security risk!) 1352 Lotus Notes 1433 Microsoft SQL Server 1494 Citrix ICA Protocol 1521 Oracle SQL 1604 Citrix ICA / Microsoft Terminal Server 2049 NFS (Network File System) 3306 mySQL 4000 ICQ 5010 Yahoo! You can see a complete list of Trojans & their ports at http://www.simovits.com/nyheter9902.html. BUT... that list was last updated in December 2002, so it's probably not 100% accurate, although it gives you a good idea of what's what. We all owe a large and extra warm thank you to Threadmaster, moderator extraordinaire, of the BearShare Forums for helping to help all of you LimeWire folks ! |
help please, i am confused i am using a mac OSX, and have the newest version of Lime Wire. Sometimes I can connect sometimes I can't. I tried changing the firewalls on panther and it didn't help. I am new to using this computer and I couldn' t find /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire but maybe I am looking in the wrong spots. Where exactly should I look? I already have forced the IP address and changed the setting for the tips and automatic connection and tried changing the port. Can anyone help? |
Re: Re: new port We all owe a large and extra warm thank you to Threadmaster, moderator extraordinaire, of the BearShare Forums for helping to help all of you LimeWire folks ! [/B][/QUOTE] Certainly! Thank you for the well explaining answer, but typing inn the new values did not help. i tried several numbers between ports 49152 to 65535. I thought it might be my ISP that is blocking gnutella? So i tried iSwipe. It connects to OpenFT, Open Nap and Web Gnutella. The rest are staying gray. On iTunes i get "560 Users" but it is still gray. So this program can not connect to gnutella network?? I have played with every setting possible now. I'm out of ideas. Must be ISP.. Must be ISP... |
Another interesting thing. I tried again to download something, and limewire immediately disconnected. But then I noticed my internet connect was still sending and receiving so I left it one. And with Limewire showing no connect, no hosts, no files, the file downloaded itself. Hmm... I think I'm giving up on Limewire. |
tried everything..... I did what you said... I deleted it, all of it. Then it worked - it let me connect. I went off of it to go to another account (my husbands) and re-download it on his computer (he accidentally erased it). It wouldn't let me finish downloading-it came up with an error, AND  when I went back to mine, it wouldn't let me connect again!!!!!!! It is very frustrating. Please help me ! |
